The thing that needs to be figured out is why. Because this crediting issue has been a thing since, at least 2014. This was a thing for Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U where any song that was outright the original from the original game they came from was just copyrighted to Nintendo while any song or remix that was made for the Smash Bros series credits the artist/composer/arranger for that song. And that's really the thing.
Any original composition for the title has the song maker credited while any past music that is just straight up the original song from a previously released game just credits Nintendo. And this even applies to the original NES Ground Theme from the original Super Mario Bros where Koji Kondo is not credited when it straight up appears in another game.

I don't know whether there is some legal or copyright issue on why Nintendo can't credit the original artists, but it's been a thing for around 10 years and the only reason it ever got talked about was because Grant Kirkhope brought up not being credited for the DK Rap in the Mario Movie. And most people didn't even notice that they didn't give credit to the original artist of the Bowser's Fury theme that appeared in the same movie.

My first guess at the logic is that since the artists don't own their songs, the credit to the contribution of existing tracks goes to Nintendo for allowing their use rather than the artist(s) for making them prior to the project in question. This doesn't apply to the songs that are made specifically for the project, as the artist(s) are directly contributing to their existence, and thus, they're credited as normal.

You know, I think it's pretty hard to tell which Konami franchise will be staying for the next Smash game.

Castlevania and Metal Gear are two of Konami's most popular franchises, and until recently, neither of them had gotten a new game in years. Castlevania got a remake of Haunted Castle for Castlevania Dominus Collection developed by M2, and Konami themselves (with the help of Virtuos) is developing a ground-up remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Either Snake or Simon (and Richter) could be cut or both of them could stay for the next game. Who knows?

Castlevania's Netflix show is getting a new season in January 2025. Richter's also rather active due to being one of the main characters. Which bodes well for his return, since he's gotten the spotlight again.

Metal Gear has minor new material via crossovers(in 2024), but they did release a collection in 2023. We have a widely rumored second collection, which doesn't entirely mean much, other than Konami giving the franchise some love.

That said, Castlevania got a lot of material immediately, so it may just be easier to negotiate for. It was gaining new stuff at the time, so that may relate to why. It's easier to advertise when there's even more to the franchise people can enjoy beyond old stuff. Metal Gear was in a bit of a smaller position activity-wise, but it still got a reasonable amount either way.

As for which is more likely to come back? That's hard to say. Castlevania is outright active right now, while Metal Gear is only mildly active. But that's not everything to it. It certainly helps, though. They both have pretty reasonable changes. Castlevania just simply has a "more active" factor going for it.

Konami is tricky to predict, simply because it's the only third party company to be cut before. We got loads of Castlevania stuff in Ultimate and a decent amount of Metal Gear too. But at the same time, Metal Gear was cut in Smash 4. It's what makes third parties tricky in general. We like to say many of them have no reason to be cut, but really Snake had no real reason to be cut in Smash 4 but he was.

Words cannot describe how fast my interest crashed the moment I knew the composers aren't even credited in Nintendo's music app.

Why? Seriously, why? This isn't a new thing since they did the same thing with adding the DK rap at the Mario movie and not credit Grant Kirkhope, but this is taking it to the next level. Imagine releasing a ****ing music app and not a single composer is credited for any of the songs.

This company man.....

By the way, dumb little observation about this graphic.

There's one single character here who isn't in Smash yet - can you spot him?
the dumb stinky Raccoon that forcibly puts you into debt with him that doesn't deserve ANY of my money?

I don't necessarily care for character threads to be open yet. I feel like the majority of them wouldn't be active, and the ones that are active would take discussion away from here.

Yeah but we'd be able to talk about certain characters without them immediately getting shot down with a will-never-ever-EVER-happen.

A Rate their chances thread starting with all the veterans and then going to community-voted potential newcomers could be fun.
I'd second this, I think we should at least consider opening up a Rate Their Chances thread. Sure it's a little early, but we do the equivalent of that here every day anyway. Will be interesting to inevitably compare results in a few years when the game is actually dropping too. No harm in getting a head start.

You know what I really liked? We had a thread where the users took turns and could nominate a character to talk about and that whole day was dedicated to that character. I wish I remembered the name of the thread or user that started it but it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot about characters I wasn’t overly familiar with at the time. It wasn’t about likelihood but instead just sharing ideas of how they could play or what they could bring to Smash.

Oh, that happens still. Negativity is just a natural human trait and all, heh.

Thankfully it's easy to report ones that are malicious. Also, sometimes people get aggressively defensive over legitimate questions, so the threads don't really do much to mitigate that at all.

that was the Rate Their Chances thread some of the others above mentioned. there's still one going for multiversus I think

No, it was similar but we didn’t discuss their likelihood. Instead, we just shared ideas of how they could play and talked about their games and backgrounds. It was likely based on the Rate their chances thread but it was different.

Edit: Found it! It was the Character Exploration Thread started by SharkLord. I knew it was the only time I ever brought up specific Magic: the Gathering characters here so it wasn’t too hard to find based on that.

Yeah, that thread was fun. I ended up handing off the ownership of the thread to amageish amageish because it was starting to get a little draining, constantly juggling all the days and noms and stuff. I doubt I'll have the time to personally run another thread like that, but if a new one started back up again I'd definitely make sure to pop my head in for the discussions.

Of course lol, I just feel like pointing out when a character is featured so prominently so consistently. This was the trend with Isabelle way back when too and it's why I correctly considered her to be a no-brainer (as a full character, not an echo). It's not a direct cause and effect obviously, but if we're seeing a character pop up this often, they're at least pretty likely to be in the peripheral or of high importance to Nintendo internally.

With the way I see Animal Crossing's status often undermined within the community I try to elevate Tom Nook when I can. But in another version of this image maybe there's like... Toad, or something, and the point is undermined. In fact, that's the case with these eshop cards. Here there are two characters not playable in Smash... doesn't have quite the same impact.

But I do find it interesting that they keep doing this bit where Isabelle and Tom Nook are there together. Even that Nintendo Store Tokyo statue of her has the Nooklings in tow. I feel like she was really eclipsing Nook during the 3DS / Wii U era so it feels like New Horizons put them on steady equal footing.

It's funny to think Nook would've probably gotten into Ultimate if it wasn't for Isabelle stealing the spotlight as Animal Crossing's main animal character at the very last moment.

So what you're saying is....

Isabelle is going to be retooled into a tag-team with Nook. :wario:

I know we've had these sorts of discussions before, but with Toad, it's like... He's objectively a major character in one of the biggest video game franchises period, but he also doesn't have much to his name that makes him distinctly "Toad" beyond good running and bad jumping. Plus, there's already a truckload of Mario characters in Smash, and a couple of other Mario characters that are decently popular in terms of requests, so against them Toad doesn't stand out as much.

With Tom Nook, he'd just be the third fighter in a series that's always sold well and has now become a major pillar for Nintendo; Plus, he has a pretty defined niche as the guy who sells you stuff. I suppose Toads also run houses to give you power-ups, but those power-ups are usually associated with Mario first and foremost, not necessarily the Toads, so they don't stick out the same way Nook does.

I remember that. Gave me an excuse to try selling Euden in Smash to the masses, as slim as it was in hindsight.
