Honestly, I'm just glad that Harada replied. Its quite funny just to see the reactions of the fanbase. People just take everything too seriously.
This is gonna end up being the new Banjo vs Steve, isn't it?
If we are being honest, given that there are pretty much no cartoony characters involved I would imagine discussions to be relatively tame. Plus it wouldn't surprise me that Sakurai just suddenly said Capcom pack time!

Correct me if I'm wrong, because I don't know much about MH, but... weren't there also rumors of a new Switch MH being developed?
There is. King Zell is an insider who said he heard there's a Monster Hunter game being planned for the Switch in 2020.

Random thought: Imagine if Nightmare from Soul Calibur gets in, how hilarious it'd be to see him wearing a bunny hood and wielding a star rod.

I mean, just thinking about him jumping around on platforms is enough to make me giggle.

That said, i'm all for his inclusion or any other Soul Calibur rep in Smash, the series have a great cast of anime swordsmen characters.

You know, for as much as we like to talk about unrepresented genres on the roster, we don't tend to talk as much about Adventure games as a genre. Visual novels aside, of course, as Phoenix Wright tends to be talked about a lot.

I think it would be cool to see a character from an early character-driven adventure game series, like King's Quest or Monkey Island. Granted I don't think those types of games were popular in Japan, but still. Hypothetically, if we got a character like King Graham or Guybrush Threepwood, how would you react?

Vaal Hazak remix when:

The song is pretty much stuck in my head since I've spent a long time farming Vaal. It would also be a great song to put in.

Monkey Island is one of the first adventure games I've played on PC. I would totally be on board with someone like Guybrush appearing.

I've always seen Guybrush specifically as a real dark horse pick and if we got him I'd be pretty excited for it

I low-key would love someone like Guybrush or Grim Fandango's Manny Calavera, but I doubt the humor of those games translated well to Japanese audiences.

There's Sam & Max too, but apparently the comic book came one year before their first game appearance, so I don't think they count.

That said, Guybrush would probably make a friend of mine really happy, so I'd be down for him. Not that I think the chances are high or even decent, but hey...

I'm hoping that character pack fighter #5 is a Capcom character, and hope that if we have another fighter pass it might have another Capcom character in it as well. Personally Phoenix and Jill are my wanted for Capcom.

Some people might compain that Smash is turning into Nintendo vs. Capcom, but it's not Capcom's fault that they have so many popular characters and are more than willing to play ball when it comes to crossovers.
Same. I'd like that the next fighter is a Capcom character, that way we would probably have another one for future DLC.
Never say never but I don't think fighter 5 will be a Capcom character, at least I'm not feeling it.

Has to be King's Quest right? It even got a revival in 2015.

I’d love almost adventure game characters, but I expect it to be one that originates from Japan. Kind of like JRPGs and Western RPGs, adventure games had their own developments in both the east and west. I imagine a lot of the classic adventure games in the west are fairly unknown in the east since these types of games take considerable more work to localize.

Professor Layton is probably one of the most famous adventure game protagonists to originate from Japan and is popular worldwide. The DS saw a rebirth of adventure games after the fell from popularity in the early 2000s.

When asked about making adventure games in their last IR Q&A, Nintendo noted the difficulty of localization with adventure games, but still mentioned their merits pointing to the success of Ace Attorney and Professor Layton.

So...What exactly is going on with Blizzard?
They banned a guy for saying "Free Hong Kong" and took away his prize money and punished the interviewers who had him too, many people have boycotted since as either they hate how Blizzard is bending over for the outright evil regime of Winnie the Pooh or are doing it because they hate Blizzard and want an excuse to seem cool now. Either way, Nintendo actually allowed people to get refunds on Overwatch Switch preorders, which they never do for other games, and they didn't even mention Overwatch when it launched

Oh dear...
You know you've ****ed up when you've got AOC and Marco Rubio agreeing that what you did was wrong.

Either way, I don't think this will have much effect on Smash. Tracer is a long shot to begin with and, if she is in Smash, then she's probably been planned well before the Blizzard controversy started up.

Sounds like something way more dramatic than it needs to be, but then again I'm not following China's political scene so I don't really know the gravity of the situation.

I have heard that China tends to flip out if you say "free Hong Cong" so I'm not too surprised though.

That could go either way for just about anyone. Sora probably got dashed, but odds are ordeals with Disney n all that were probably made beforehand of this....idek what to call this.

To be honest, Blizzard were ****ed up at the moment he talked, kinda in his contract that he can't say political stuff, like it's in the contract of all the people in the same predicament, so the guy knew full well that he was taking a bullet for it to work, and well... He did succeed, it blew up thanks to what he did
But yeah, anyway, either Blizzard was allowing it, and then 1. They weren't doing their job correctly 2. The next guy with political statements to say was free to do so because it was allowed one time
Or they didn't, and... Well, we know what happened, so yeah, of course the situation of Hong Kong was... Pretty ****ty, and deserved to be talked about, but there is a place and time for everything, and Blizzard was pretty ****ed at the moment he said something

Far from Smash
I’ve said it before but you could add another 3 or 4 Capcom characters and it wouldn’t even look weird. They have such a treasure trove of great franchises.
Of the existing partners, I'd put Capcom in 3rd as far as my 'untapped potential' list goes. Sega sits far-and-away at the top for me (PS/O, Virtual On, Shining, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5, Skies of Arcadia, Nights, Kid Chameleon, Alex Kidd, Panzer Dragoon, House of the Dead, etc.), followed by Square Enix (FF MMOs, Tomb Raider, Chrono, Mana, Legacy of Kain, Star Ocean, Gex, Parasite Eve*, Deus Ex, etc.).

Capcom does have a lot of fun newcomers, but I doubt they'd ever go far enough down their list to hit the ones I'd actually like to see (Breath of Fire, Dino Crisis, Onimusha, Vampire Savior, etc.) Or just give me Tron Bonne.... That'd be cool too. >_>

You know, for as much as we like to talk about unrepresented genres on the roster, we don't tend to talk as much about Adventure games as a genre. Visual novels aside, of course, as Phoenix Wright tends to be talked about a lot.
Even though they're technically from different genres, I sort of throw Guybrush Threepwood and Carmen Sandiego in the same bucket, as they both cover older eras of PC gaming as well as genres/demographics that have largely faded. Carmen is my more desired of the two right now, but I'd be down with either of them, and Guybrush might actually have more impact.

*OK... Parasite Eve sits in a weird spot. The series started as a novel, but the games used an original cast with just the general setup stemming from the phenomenon introduced in the novel and a small reference to its events, so I don't know if that would rule it out. Doubt it, but eh... Then again, I don't even know if Square holds the license anymore since they did everything they could to distance themselves from the story beats of the novel in the 3rd game, even dropping "Parasite Eve" as a title. Frankly, the 3rd Game is almost a franchise-killer for me, so if anything has to go that route to reference the series, rather than focusing solely on the first two games, I'd prefer to just drop the issue and move on. >_>

I would LOVE Guybrush. One of those dreams I don't even entertain since I know he's never happening. I'd pop off so hard though, and he would be so funny and fit right in and finally give us a true swashbuckler character as well.

It's not gonna happen but man, I loved Transistor so much. What a game. Superb music, great story, beautiful art, good combat... I would be happy with this song in Smash:
An excuse to talk about Transistor's music? I love the entire soundtrack, but in terms of a Smash appropriate song I think I would go with this.

I think the issue with the "no getting political" excuse was it's incredibly inconsistent with what we've seen in the past. We've seen players make political statements before and Blizzard did nothing about it (which they honestly should do. Your employment shouldn't be threatened because you've used your right to be politically active). The difference between then and now is those political messages didn't offend the totalitarian government of a mass market Blizzard trying to break into.

King's Quest is one of the classic (and I believe notoriously hard) point and click adventure games made back when graphics could barely represent anything.

The Tales of Monkey Island series is a decently large point and click adventure series that I would say is worth checking out. It's got witty humour and also has at least one title that was released in this century. (The older ones don't look dated either)

EDIT: Did a quick Google search to make sure my information wasn't incorrect or something and...It's highly likely that this is the case. Feel free to ignore me.

Not gonna go too deep into the current Premier nor the ongoing Hong Kong protests* for obvious reasons, but lets just say that the government at large has become a hell of a lot more paranoid since the current Premier ascended. That Winnie the Pooh was censored after the current Premier was compared to him tells a lot - Chinese as a language is known for its hidden meanings ("Grass Mud Horse" being a prime example).

The difference between then and now is those political messages didn't offend the totalitarian government of a mass market Blizzard trying to break into.
If I may object on that point: Blizzard's been active in China since at least the WC3 days. WOW in particular had a major Chinese playerbase (and infamously hosted many gold farming organizations, since it was one of the big "get rich quick!" opportunities in a rapidly expanding country). Overwatch is also big there, with four Overwatch League teams located there.

So really, Blizzard's decision was built on "crap, we can't afford an angry Chinese government at our throats!" As dumb as it is.

*(Things have been simmering for at least 5 years, but the protests erupted ca. 5 months ago)

I only know surface level information as well so I'm not sure why I commented as if I was going to be able to explain anything. I do know that in one of the Tales of Monkey Island games the main character's hand gets diseased or cursed or something which causes it to do various things (like attempting to flip people off) and he has to find a cure for it. (Also the entire island is suffering from this as well and said affliction eventually takes over the entire body.)

That is my bad then, I did not know that political statement had been made in the past while they said nothing, I only knew of this one particular moment

Frankly I don't think thats the case, that's underplaying P5.

You need to also consider that currently Persona 5 is currently a pretty profilic game getting rerelases, spinoffs, stage play, anime, related media, etc. Its a franchise that actually would get a lot of synergy with Smash just like how they went with DQXI for Hero main alt.

I have no doubt that there is an overlap in characters chosen for the game and franchises that Sakurai loves.

I kinda don't think it would affect it in any way if Crash was decided already but might impact negatively if he was currently in negotiations.
Sakurai wrote in an article that he loved P5 and when a certain persona game was coming to Nintendo it gave him enough connection to add joker.

Basically they're some of the more historic point and click adventure games (though less "click" for King's Quest due to its age, it focused more on typed command prompts like "look table" to look on a table). Each comes from a company well known for the genre, King's Quest from Sierra (now owned by Activision) and Monkey Island from Lucasarts (now Disney).

King's Quest is more medieval and based on fairy tales, while Monkey Island was heavily based on Pirates of the Caribbean. Both franchises are known for their humor, and King's Quest rivals Dragon's Lair in the sheer number of ways you can die. Both also had at least one game in the 2010s, but are more so considered retro franchises nowadays.

Opossum beat me to it, but I realized how funny it is that the biggest adventure games (outside of the visual novel genre) are all owned by Activision, Disney or the new Telltale.

The old Sierra and Lucasarts adventure games are pretty well-regarded cult classics nowadays. I wouldn't say it's impossible to get Guybrush or Graham but it's far from likely, especially since they don't have fan demand to back them up like :ultbanjokazooie: did
