There's not much of a point debating it now, but between Sephiroth and Eggman, I'd definitely say Eggman would've been the more fitting and iconic addition. Eggman isn't even my first choice for a second Sonic rep, but he truly is one of, if not the most recognizable villain out of all the third-party franchise involved with Smash.

Either way, saying stuff like, "Eggman isn't serious enough," is a pretty lousy way to discredit him, no offense. Bowser isn't a very serious villain either, but you'd have a hard time finding a villain with a name as big as his.

joker gives us hope though.
personally i'd love it if the announcer didn't say sephiroth's name and we just got the "Seph-i-roth" line from his theme when he won matches.
This game's winner is Seph-i-I-Roth

also, i just did a quick experiment i played the sephiroth theme song for my musical theater major sister and she recognized the song.
I honestly think One Winged Angel is so damn iconic there's gonna be a lot of non-vidya-enjoyers that will hear the song, not know its name, and find themselves humming to it on account of having heard it before.

Sephiroth burned down Cloud's hometown, stabbed his girlfriend, and tried to drop a friggin meteor to wipe out the planet, and he's not an irredeemable monster?
Sephiroth's Not Good, and I would say he's not the most Redeemable person

But I do believe that he did Snap when he burned down his Hometown. He'd been reading some of his Heritage or something like that and been sleep deprived, and I think there's more to it. It was still very wrong, and he should answer for his Crimes and such though

As for everything after that Incident, it was to achieve his Goal for his Mom or something like that. He's Goal Oriented. He's willing to Torment and Kill People for it, and that's what makes him Bad person for Society at large, but yes

Sephiroth and Vergil are alike in that kind of Way. Now Vergil won't go out of his Way to Kill People (but he has Killed alot of People before), So Vergil is a better person and more Redeemable person than Sephiroth is

Ridley, To My Knowledge, does everything for the Fun of it, Including killing people and Destroying Planets and such. There's no Goal to it all except his own Satisfaction. That's why Ridley is I would say the Closet thing to a Complete Monster in the Roster

Did Ridley really eat Samus' parents alive? I thought it was more along the lines of him camping them out at the ledge. That, I can see getting Samus angry enough to go do something about it. Avenge them, perhaps.

Which is why he and King Ghidorah would get along so well and probably be the best of bros.

They're gigantic genocidal, malevolent alien dragons that go planet to planet causing as much death and destruction as possible for the fun of it. What other reason do they have?

Hell Joker probably would be the only human Ridley would take a liking to.
I Don't know who this King Ghidorah is (I'm gonna assume he's from Godzilla), But I believe Ridley is also Similar to Carnage from Spider man in terms of their Personalites. Of course I don't think Carnage has destroyed whole planets (He would if he had the Power though), but yes

I feel like iconicness is a hard to define metric, especially in cases like this.

Is Eggman more well known? Proooooooobably. The Sonic fanbase is large no doubt.

But at the same time, how many video game characters can you know exactly who they are from not the first couple seconds, but the very first beat of a song? The fact that a single drumbeat is all people needed to know "It's Sephiroth" speaks volumes to that.

Putting aside "big-ness" and simple icon power, I struggle to think of any characters with that same kind of presence, actually. You're onto something.

I don’t get the buzz around Chun li all of a sudden. Is it because Sephiroth is the first time a third party got a second fully unique character? Cause if so. We could also be talking about Dr Robotnik, Zero, Another
Bayonetta character, Raiden from MGS, and Alucard right?
I think it's just because of how big Chun-Li is. There are a lot of potential canditates here, but Chun-Li is just the one that jumps out the most I guess.

Seriously? You don't know who King Ghidorah is?

He's to Godzilla as Bowser is to Mario, Joker is to Batman, Lex Luthor is to Superman.

His arch-nemesis. The King of Terror, The One Who is Many, Destroyer of Worlds.

King Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster.

I kinda wish Smash DLC characters would bring fan music into the game, because then Sephiroth could bring with him this one fan remix of "You Can Hear the Cry of the Planet"...
The perfect track to listen to while playing Smash in the Malt Shop.

Lots of people are talking about Dr. Robotnik? In fact he's probably more talked about than Chun?

Well, Ridley does use Anguiruses roar in Super Metroid so they might get in a spat about how they feel of Godzilla.

Oh I've seen this Character before. I guess I don't recognize the Name though.

It's kind of like how People don't recongize Link as Link, but Rather Zelda. or how people recongize Rosalina as Elsa

I think Eggman might dominate more Discussion than Chun-Li, but I think these are the Two that Jump out the Most

I must have missed those posts then.
There are literally multiple posts right above you on this exact page discussing Eggman.

Either way, we could be talking about tons of characters rather then just those two.
Yes, but those two just happen to be the most popular and iconic of the bunch.

I feel like in the speculation scene we should be considering a lot more than the two most popular. Especially characters who helped define they’re genre like Alucard and Zero.

Sephiroth is iconic, but I think a lot of people are starting to believe he's the most iconic third-party villain simply because he was added first.

Not denying that he's huge, but if we're arguing that he was added because he's, "iconic and the best possible choice for a third-party villain", I think there are others who would be recognized by even more people. I know that's only an opinion, but it's something that I feel like most people should be able to agree on regardless.

Random thing I learned: Palkia's cry when summoned from a Poké Ball in Ultimate is King Ghidorah's roar. It's Brawl sound is Godzilla mixed with a Varactyl from Star Wars (that thing Obi Wan rode in Episode 3).

Just found it interesting.

Both of those are Assist Trophies.
To be fair it was thought a second unique fighter for a third-party series was also highly unrealistic. Zero could fill out his own challenger pack too, helping Mega Man representation showcase the X and/or Zero subseries.

there's one other. This song starts, you know exactly what's up.
I wish they had a bigger gap between Megalovania starting and Sans showing up. The reactions would've been even greater.

Personally, Even with the Assist Trophies, I think at least in terms of Another Sonic Character discussion, Shadow and Knuckles Should not be Ignored at all, With Eggman and Tails taking up all the Discussion

And there is no Bias with this post, But I think if we really are to Re-Consider Fan rules, and be open Minded by our Discussion, even if you do think Assist Trophies do impact the character chances massivly in a Negative way, I do think there should be Balanced discussion around all 4 of the characters, with Rational Reasoning and back and forth discussion

Keke never disappoints. lol

Anyway...

I feel like both would be extremely annoying characters with Alucard being yet another redonkulously large sword wielder, and Zero being...Well...

Toho actually has a part in the Pokemon movies, so they end up reusing a lot of roars-For example, Giratina has Mothra's chirps, and Yveltal get Megaguirus' roars. Wikizilla even has a page on the series, including the roar cameos.

agh i keep wanting to type touhou frick

Fun fact that is totally a fact and not something I just made up: Sakurai was in the middle of making Zero a fighter, but was worried about him being S-tier YET AGAIN due to SvC Chaos and UMvC3 so Zero was sent to AT Hell. This is why his AT has several moves instead of just three.
