On a side note, I'd like to point out that I kinda disagree with the term "fan rules." That implies that it's set in stone, when it's really just basing things off of past precedent and patterns. If anyone actually treats these things as a rule and isn't just going "Because so-and-so has or hasn't happened, I think X," we're gonna have a very weirdchamp moment on out hands.

Let's do a game that involves some fan-rule breaking. Not like actual breaking, but basically, let's pick some characters that would defy fan-rules that have yet to be broken just for fun. Like here's some clear examples, but you can add ones not listed below:

-Echo Fighters have to be from the same franchise as the character they are Echoing: Blaziken(Captain Falcon).
-Echo Fighters have to be the same hitbox/height as the character they are Echoing: Viridi(Palutena)
-DLC Fighters cannot already be an Assist Trophy: Isaac
-DLC Fighters cannot already be a Mii Costume: Rex

2. Baby Bowser (Bowser)
3. Waluigi
4. Tails

Common sense speculation: A representative from Square Enix means it's less likely for another Final Fantasy character, Geno, Chrono etc to be in
Fan rule: Every Square Enix character is HARD DECONFIRMED because SE can't have another rep

To be honest the Reimu for Smash account is the only part of Twitter I'll regularly check. The majority of Twitter is extremely messy.

I'd say Meat Boy, but Meat Boy would be a bit weird.

It makes a lot of sense to me Geno didn't have a shot, assuming he's definitely deconfirmed. I really wanted him and believed he'd be announced at some point, but Nintendo is very hard pressed on taking risks for something only a small community is passionately requesting. Just look at Mother 3, people have been asking for a localization for 14 years. It just doesn't seem like Geno was prioritized, He definitely fits better as a base roster character to me.

I'm not really against the term "fan rule" itself, it just gets misused or people get too trigger happy with it sometimes.

I would say Undertale due to how Nintendo put it and Deltarune in their full directs, but, y’know.

Other than that, Hollow Knight sounds reasonable; maybe Touhou or FNAF, too. Maybe Shovel Knight could be upgraded, maybe Shantae.

Maybe we’ll get Fireboy and Watergirl, or World of Goo

Touhou is a bullet heck series, one of the series Undertale drew inspiration from. The main character is usually Reimu, I think, but you sometimes play as others, based on what I’ve seen. The series’ creator, ZUN, is also very easy-going with its rights, leading to many fanworks including some published on the Nintendo eShop.

Indie characters aren't really in that great a position, as the biggest ones are either disconfirmed or don't have much to do with Nintendo, and the smaller ones are...well, smaller. Pretty niche all things considered.

I think Reimu is the most likely indie character. Since Touhou is one of the more iconic indie games out there.

Sephiroth's one wing has an interesting history of recursion.

Originally, he had seven wings as Safer Sephiroth, with one replacing his sword arm. It was Kingdom Hearts that introduced the one wing, though he also had a pair of wings on his hips that were also taken from Safer Sephiroth. This would later be adapted into the Advent Children movie, though he used his original design instead of the exaggerated Kingdom Hearts one. In addition, he sprouts the wing instead of just having it by default. Advent Children's interpretation of his sprouting the wing was used for the fighting game spinoff Dissidia Final Fantasy, which solidified it as a staple of his character.

Basically, I guess you could consider his Kingdom Hearts design a sort of "prototype" for the Advent Children portrayal.

This just confuses me more.

Long running Japanese Indie series that's still run to this day, like 20~ years at least.

It's a bullet hell game, aka, an arcade 'space' shooter, except not space, and more anime-ish.


Its music is arguably more well known than it is, at least in the west. UN Owen was her? is a song that I'd wager most people have heard at least once, but not sure where it's from.

The best echo for Sonic is Mighty, and even he would need a couple of alterations thanks to the lack of quills.

Tails and Shadow are both semi-clone at best, or you're doing a tremendous disservice to the characters. Granted, Shadow could still be a hogpodge of attacks which are already designed. A little bit of Sonic, a little bit of Ness, a little bit of Zelda, a little bit of Mewtwo and you have a very good portrayal of Shadow. Not as little work as a clone/echo, but I think it still cuts down on the work to do quite a bit.

The only move Tails and Sonic should have in common is the spindash down special.

Metal Sonic is... fundamentally different.

Microsoft owns him now. He hasn't been an indie character since Microsoft purchased him, and that was around 2014.

Personally I’d say he represents indie success and is kinda indie in spirit I guess (Mojang’s devs and other members still make it feel like a nice indie studio with how open and interactive they are, though their higherups pulled a crap move either recently or last year by taking away their employees’ $12k winter and summer bonuses), but Mojang is bigger than they were back then and is owned by Microsoft, so he’s not really indie anymore.

It'd be cool if Tails had attacks from Tails Adventure and Tails' Skypatrol.

Well if you had to choose one, who would you go with? To me it has to be Akuma.

I would 100% go for the one that's NOT a goddamn 3rd Shoto.

I still say Frisk is not Impossible (sans could have sold better than Nintendo's Expectations and it released before the Fpass 2 cutoff date, Also the lack of spirits)

Shadow is Dark Pit. Shadow is Dark Samus.

Shadow is Dark Sonic.

PupNapoleon, I get the feeling that you assumed I was using the fan rule definition, when in reality I was using the common sense speculation definition. Does Sephiroth being in definitely deconfirm Lara beyond a reasonable doubt? No. But does it lower her chances for this pass, even a little bit? Yes, and it certainly does have more of an impact on Lara’s chances than the hypothetical situation that Chun-Li, a character from a completely different company, gets in.

Well, Mii Fighter is actually one, but I barely like to count it beyond the symbol.

I like having some OC's here and there too. Primid feels like a good cross between the older Polygons/etc. while having some unique abilities of its own, not being an Echo effectively. They're really neat mooks. Master Hand would also be sweet, though I'll take him as some kind of multiplayer special thing too.

I wish you unlocked a Master Hand mode after beating his level, it sucks you have to start a new game if you want to play as him again...just for one level...

I don't think you'd get a more muted response and comparatively tepid sales than by making one of the DLC a Smash OC.
