Because it's plain and easy to see when Nintendo's policies on how second parties can use the Mario brand changed.
Paper Mario went from a series where we could see enemy species doing things other than opposing Mario and see Toads being their own people to nothing but jokes about how it's all the same.

You could tell they were really trying with Origami King with the big plot twist being the villain wanting to genocide all the Toads because he sees the face of the person who hurt his pride everywhere but I still miss Goombella.

Whenever restriction get mentioned it's always in regards to Mario species designs. Nothing else. This conversation was started because someone suggested Isaac appearing in a Camelot Mario sports game. While I think that's never going to happen, someone else said that's not allowed anymore due to the new restrictions on the Mario IP.

I sincerely doubt the Mario IP committee would allow that lol

But that's a bunch of nonsense. There's absolutely nothing that says characters from other series aren't allowed to crossover in a Mario spin off.

Seriously! People got so upset about Paper Mario not having unique looking characters and they start to believe that the Mario series is the most restricted series ever and isn't allowed to do anything creative or different.

Then, we got Steve. Now, I really like Steve's inclusion, but I hate what he's done for Smash speculation. Because he's a big third party, people saw him as an opportunity to settle back into their pre-ARMS thought patterns. That meant throwing around the same couple of names that had already been discussed to death. Dante, Crash, Geno, and Ryu Hayabusa are fun characters, but I'm so sick of talking about them. If anything, things have even worse now, seeing how characters that used to be discussed like Leon, Doom Slayer, and 2B have basically fallen out of favour as candidates for a number of reasons. Since Steve's reveal, we've really only had two new characters gain a lot of discussions: Monster Hunter and Adol. Their presence does make things a lot more interesting, but it's not enough to make up for the tired environment that is the overall speculation community.

In all honesty, this has been a problem since the beginning of speculation for a Smash game on the Switch.

"4's newcomers had a lot of characters too new for Brawl? This game is gonna focus on characters too new for 4!"
"8/8 Direct was full of ballot requested newcomers? The final Direct will be too!"
"4/5 of CP1 was third parties? It'll end with one as well, and might be something for Europe/China since Terry can be liked by Mexicans!"
"The pass stared with an ARMS rep? Upgrades, people, upgrades!"
"We got Minecraft Steve from Minecraft? Obviously he's the REAL start of this pass and it'll all be characters from unrepresented games with more than 10 million fans."

That Goku video takedown seems a bit sus. First off the only copyright strikes were on Goku videos not any other mod, Second the company that gave the strike was just "Nintendo" not something like "Nintendo of america" or "Nintendo Co ltd." Third nintendo gave a copyright strike to a kirby fan video that turned out to be a fake nintendo.

I think this whole situation is a troll trying to get people to have more outrage about nintendo and also to make smash fans panic about Goku.

OR Nintendo is just being Nintendo again that is always a possibility. Hanlon's razor and all that.

To me, It feels stale because no one is talking about anyone new. All they talk about are characters from rumors or charcaters from coincidences like Lloyed, Geno, Whoever the Ys guy is, ect.

Jokes aside if you wanna get in just play in your own pace. You don't have to rush through things, just let the content of each game soak in. The series has impressive world building and you'll see stuff that were planted in one game fully blossom in another game.

With that said here's the order you should go for, don't stray away from it unless you want to spoil yourself the experience:
1) Trails in the Sky FC
2) Trails in the Sky SC
3) Trails in the Sky the 3rd
4) Trails from Zero
5) Trails to Azure
6) Trails of Cold Steel 1
7) Trails of Cold Steel 2
8) Trails of Cold Steel 3
9) Trails of Cold Steel 4
10) Trails of the Beginning

If it makes you Feel better, I think Euden and Dragalia Lost is Likely going to come to Smash in some form, and at this point I don't think spirit event, but either Mii Costume or Playable. I do know that apparently Dragalia Lost Fans would prefer if any character BUT Euden was playable in Smash

Stages, Music, Veteran Changes and Modes were actually things that could be speculated, instead of the complete non-existence of those things now (the latter two are, understandably, completely gone, and the first two are only in reference to a DLC newcomer).

On it's own, I'd be fine. I spend 55+ hours completing everything in Ys VIII and regretted nothing.

But an entire series of plot-heavy games that take that long just for the main storyline alone? Hoo boy...

I'd suggest doing a big writeup on Euden, but I know that not everyone has the same degree of writing stamina and dedication as I do. Maybe find some other Euden supporters and make it a group project, or something.

It was way more sporadic so there was no "artificial" anticipation. And the wait to see veterans return during the base game speculation was pretty fun. Waking up to a Sakurai Miiverse post every week day was so much fun.

Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure are the ones you are thinking of. They're both available on windows but they don't have an official English release. Now the good news is that there already exists English translations for both games. The bad news is that only one of them is good, which is Trails from Zero. But the other good news is that the group that released the recent translation for Trails from Zero is also doing a translation for Trails to Azure and it's currently 60% done and is projected to release in February/March of 2021.

I've said this before somewhere(I don't remember where now, lol), but if you play and like even one Trails game, you'll pretty much want to play them all. It's that kind of series. Of course, they aren't for everyone. If you look at the Steam's store page for any Trails game, they all have the "Story Rich" tag. And for a good reason. They are basically the fusion of an RPG with visual novel levels of storytelling and dialog. Dialog being separate here because there is a LOT of optional dialog from NPCs that you can ignore in these games if you don't have the patience to read through it all, although I think the optional dialog is one of the best parts of the series due to how well written the characters are in general.

Another comparison that can be drawn is that they are like an ongoing book/tv/movie series. Each game has it's own plot, but an overarching narrative for the entire series is present throughout which connects them. Hence why people recommend starting with Sky FC, or at least the first game in Cold Steel. It's not as intimidating as it sounds though, as you really don't have to play them in terms of arc order(Sky > Crossbell > Cold Steel). You might miss some references from Sky/Crossbell if you play through the Cold Steel games first, but having watched videos from reviewers who started with Cold Steel and later went back to the Sky arc, I don't think it is nearly as bad as some Trails fans think it is. In fact, I'd even say that references can work both ways in this series. For example, there is a prominent character in Sky who is also prominent in Cold Steel. If you played Cold Steel first, going into Sky with knowledge of who this character is can actually be more entertaining in some ways, because you can pick up on all of the smaller details surrounding that character your first time through Sky.

Think of it like this: If you played Ys Seven before Ys VI, then you already know who Geis is. Which is why you can appreciate that character more going into Ys VI after playing Ys Seven. Does that make sense? XD

To be fair, I think people do tend to ignore Euden's chances a little too much. A mobile game character made by Nintendo makes perfect sense to me, because Nintendo is obviously trying to get into the mobile game market. And we all know how aggressive Nintendo can be when they want to promote something. >_>

Most of the characters I want are either Nintendo Owned (Bandana Dee, Kamek, Grovyle) or smaller, very closely related to Nintendo (Maxwell Scribblenauts, Frisk, Mega Man X) third parties. These sorts of characters don't really have a lot going for them in the DLC era. The kinds of characters who experience more popularity are third parties that are big and/or aren't very close to Nintendo, which given my Nintendo-centric history I'm less inclined to be familiar with. I've never played a Crash game or a Doom game, and I couldn't even play Nier Automata or Tales of Symphonia if I wanted too.

Objectively, things are definitely more varied. but personally it feels more restrictive than ever.
