Are there any characters you guys don't necessarily want, but think they'd be a lot of fun to play as if they got in?
I don't really like XCX Elma or the game itself very much...

buuuuuuut the tools she has are pretty damn cool and I really like her design. On a surface level, I'm all in.

Not at this point. The DLC characters are just getting more and more overcomplicated, so no matter who they add, I'm worried Sakurai will make them unplayable to me by making them too faithful to their home series.

I can't believe Elma Xenoblade was just a fusion dance of Dante DMC and Vergil DMC all along. Dante's color scheme, Vergil's sword and colorscheme in her true form. Or is that her devil trigger?

Heavy from Team Fortress 2. I don't really want him because most people pick him alone. However if the Heavy has the Pokemon Trainer tag team mechanic with Scout and Pyro then that would be cool.

Kinda Lloyd. Yuri too tbh. Like, I wouldn't say I flat-out don't want them. I'm neutral-positive on them. They're just not huge wants of mine. But the fact that they'd be swordies and probably have a lot of combos? That's the entire reason I'm hoping for them :p

The simplest answer I can give is that Smash Bros. is considered to be a much bigger deal than stuff like MVC. It's pretty much considered to be Video Game Valhalla, and people naturally have higher standards/expectations of who or what can get into these games or not.
Higher standards? I disagree here. These boards are screaming for Reimu and Kiryu to get in. I don't think either of them has more international recognition than the Joker or Freddy Kreuger. I think the Smash community has really loose standards, and a ton of fan made rules that get broken almost every reveal.

To be fair, Smash already has a lot of the most recognizable characters in it. When you already have Mario, Pikachu, and Sonic it is hard to get a more recognizable face. Obviously there are big video game characters left out, but they are frequently discussed in this topic.

Also, I don't think comparing to non video game additions holds any weight. We know that, up to this point, Sakurai isn't willing to add characters from other mediums. Sure we can say that adding Winston Churchill would have more recognition than Akira Howard, but it isn't possible so who cares?

Wow can't believe you'd ssy this even as a joke. CLEARLY we'd get Margaret Thatcher first, voiced by herself summoned from the grave, being the first DLC character to be hated by literally everyone

That said I don't know why people are saying Min Min was received poorly.

She blatantly wasn't. If a few frazzled internet goers means a character is received poorly than Isabelle and Bayonetta were received poorly.

This seems like hardcore fans twisting facts to suit a narrative.
I recall Bayonetta being received poorly. Not only because she was last, but because Nintendo tried to convince us that our BALLOT voted character came in the top something of one country (litote- I know it was top 5 in Europe, which I also know was highly doubted). And then she was too good. Bayonetta was absolutely contested for inclusion.

They wouldn't have done a Sword/Shield spirit event if they were gonna do a Sword/Shield Pokemon as DLC. They would've just skipped doing one until the DLC dropped like they did with Three Houses.
Fan theory (conjecture).

I’m actually pretty against another Sonic character because I’d prefer other Sega franchises get a character; Yakuza, Virtua Fighter, Puyo Puyo, before Sonic gets another but I won’t deny that Robitnik could be a super fun and super unique addition. Other Sonic characters are very meh to me.

Question: if Vol. 2 had 10 fighters instead of 6 (2 Echoes can come with any one of these), which ones would you pick? Only rule is that you have to include the officially revealed fighters as well.
Here are mine:

  • 76: Lara Croft
  • 77: Min Min
  • 78: Frogger
  • 79: Crash Bandicoot
  • 80: Isaac
  • 81: Scorpion
  • 81ε: Sub-Zero
  • 82: Agumon
  • 83: Rayman
  • 84: Steve
  • 85: Jill Valentine
  • 85ε: Leon Kennedy
Honorable mentions: Sora, Captain Toad, Dixie Kong, Arle, Doomguy, Paper Mario, Tracer, Eevee, Angry Birds, Balloon Fighter, Chibi Robo, Monster Hunter, Heihachi, Lip, Nightmare...LoL, Warcraft..... honestly there are so many characters that would please me, it becomes difficult

Definitely Dante. While I personally prefer Nero's playstyle, he was still super fun in DMC4.

I'd say Dixie Kong, too but that depends on how much she'd borrow from Diddy Kong.
Have to agree on Dixie. There's a case to be made there that it's the B moves that should be prioritized with her - not just for the sake of having a more true-to-the-text DK character, but also since the Banana Peels are (IMO) really irritating to play against when going up against a good Diddy player.

Are there any characters you guys don't necessarily want, but think they'd be a lot of fun to play as if they got in?
I'd say Doomguy, Shantae and (even though it's nigh impossible) Jak / Daxter primarily. Sims would also be a lot of fun to play as.

I don't think that that's proof that we don't have higher standards as much as how focusing on bigger names than what Nintendo has to offer has only worked for 2 out of 7 characters throughout FP1 and 2, and still acting like all the third parties got the same reaction as Steve (and Hero in Japan) while Min Min drove Nintendo to near bankruptcy. That and Geno is still allowed to be a part of modern speculation. Can you imagine trying to suggest a 20-year-old one-off side character who's first party today?

....WHAT!? Nintendo hasn't approached bankruptcy. Of what on the planet do you speak?

I think the Geno crowd actually tends to prove the point that it's not that open ended. This crowd gets volatile. Which is an indication of being unwavering- ie, not loose standards. (And also, Geno is not first party. That's part of the 'struggle.')

If it makes you feel better, I don't see how they can overcomplicate Kunio. Then again, I've never played his games...

I know. I'm just suggesting that with them putting in this link , this might be bigger focus than in FP1. that or maybe they just thought it be good idea to advertise on the Site. It especially helps Min-Min
I think it's more likely that both of the second fighter's pass's characters happened to have games on the Switch. It could very well not have any characters that aren't on the Switch, but I don't think it would be because they made a conscious effort not to.

Not unless it's some kinda secret movie. The combat in PF plays like a normal MM game. The characters don't have a bunch of added melee attacks.
It is. All four characters have a special directional input that can be executed when holding a full charge in order to pull off a special attack. Mega Man has the Mega Upper, Bass Has the Crescent Kick (basically just Flash Kick), Proto Man has Blues Strike (most similar to Kikosho I think), and I forgot what Duo has.

EDIT: According to the MMKB, he has a generic uppercut called the Giant Knuckle, which acts like a MvC launcher, and can be followed up with a jump and an attack that smacks the opponent to the ground. Sounds pretty amusing.

A strong, yet non-gimmicky character being added would be pretty nice. Or at least one that's not super over the top. Banjo just has some 'charges' to his Side B and thats it; that's not bad at all. Even Joker isn't all that bad; it's basically just Limit break that provides a temporary buff. Not super complicated.

I'm saying people are ACTING like that happened.

Again, I know that. I'm suggesting the only reason he's allowed to be talked about is because he's third-party, because there's no way you'd be able to talk about a twenty year old one off side character if he was first party.

I don't know about that, but I do think he would be seen as less likely than he is now (though nobody thinks he's very likely to begin with), which is a little ironic.

Though in such a scenario, he'd probably be an Assist Trophy at this point considering Isaac.

Honestly I think the only reason Geno is still allowed to be talked about is because of this interview

View attachment 290074

And also the fact that we still haven't seen his Mii costume return, after seven different waves.
This is the only thing they point to and it's not even that big of evidence. Hell he could say that he wanted to add Layton to smash but that still wouldn't be evidence because he is a human and humans change their minds. They like to think that if Sakurai does not add Geno smash then it's because he doesn't care about them and it's a slap to their face which is a very stupid thing to think. This isnt me making fun of them, this is me expaining what Ive seen from them

And I mean this in the nicest way, They need to have a more open mind

This thread on this very page: Talks about characters they'd think would be fun which include a few first parties and the third parties are mostly successful but nothing that's sold 100 million or anything

Nelson: "ONCE AGAIN PEOPLE REFUSE TO TALK ABOUT WHAT AREN'T THE BEST SELLING GAMES ON THE PLANET"

For real though do you see people suggest anything that isn't exactly what you want as wanting solely the best selling franchises on the planet? If so, I'd love to live in the reality you live in where Okami, Pheonix Wright, Yakuza and many more are the best selling video game franchises ever, but sadly I live in the real world
