Honestly in terms of references, Sakurai's probably outdone himself. Steve ****ing summons a bed when falling asleep and the trailer shows that Steve needs to mine for blocks and ore to build and craft with, representing all of the core game mechanics outside of hunger. It's just jawdropping how much genuine love was put in for everything
Perhaps. I can't speak definitively on it, of course.
I'm pretty glad I've never had to actually play it, as I don't own the games that include it. That melody though? Goosebumps. Every time.
At the same time we have multiple people including Imram saying this was in the works for 3 years or so

I genuinely won't be surprised if, considering this month, we get a metric ton of Herobrine related snapshots and art pieces because of this announcement.

I think the difference there is that the spritework for all of the retro characters always meant for you to fill in the gaps between frames. Steve's animations are just crude, so what worked for Simon and Mega Man wasn't necessarily going to work for Steve, especially since the crudeness is a source of charm to a lot of people. It's likely that Mr. Game & Watch doesn't have clean animations for similar reasons.
I take anything that stops the Geno talk one way or the other.

The simplest answer would be that people are not really internally consistent with how they see / implement different characters working in a game such as Smash. Prioritizing similar jank differently between the characters etc. Sakurai might believe that Steve's jank is part of the charm (especially if Bergensten and co. agreed on that point). Meanwhile, he might've simply seen Megaman 8's walk cycle and thought it fit Smash better.I get Steve's animations are all directly from the game, but there is a difference between rip and reference.
Mega Man's run is clearly from the game too, but I'm glad it's not just three frames looped.
I get what they're going for, but jank is not something I'd personally opt to emulate if given the choice, especially when the other characters tend to avoid it. So I understand the complaints, though personally I take more issue with the appearance.

I legitimately think that most people wouldnt care. Geno is big for Smash, and absolutely nowhere else. Yet, Nintendo benefits very little from the people who already know him actually being satisfied.
Conspiracy theory: Steve was meant to close out the first pass, but they couldn’t get everything locked down in time (if the “in the works for three years” thing is true), and so they pivoted to an easy first-party from an upcoming game to fill the gap: Byleth. Would maybe help explain why the all third-party first pass suddenly ended on a first party.
I'll admit I was pretty "hoes mad" when Byleth came out. But c'mon, their moveset is awesome and a ton of FE fans are happy they got in.

I feel Chief has to show up if Microsoft will allow it. Even if it's not playable, it would be a missed opportunity to not at least inquire about it
