As others have said, I think Shroob's theory is pretty sound. There's always the chance a Mario character could come later, but...It'd be weird. Really weird, 'cause right now would be the absolute best time to do it IMHO, and it would make one wonder why they didn't if that's our scenario.

For the sake of those who want it, I hope that it turns out well for them, even if I'm personally not super optimistic franchises like Mario or Zelda are getting anything this DLC cycle.

Maybe, it's just were all starved of speculation that we've used all up except repeating the same discussions over and over again. We all want it to end especially so what we could speculate next after the character is revealed and what to might expect.

But that's my idea mainly. If the next character isn't Mario, then I have to take pause at the idea of one coming period. This is the first time, from my memory at least, that they've actually gone out of their way to promote one of these tournaments as a big deal, to the point it got included in the Mario Direct, if the next character isn't from Mario, or in the off chance they also show off CP8 and CP8 isn't shown off to BE from Mario, then I just don't expect one period.

I did get the idea that there could be another "Mario + Rabbids"-like game (crossing Mario with a third party) in the background...

... but that idea feels rather faulty when one asks the question "Why wasn't it included in the 35th Direct?". So I can't in all honesty say that's a solid alternative, even if it's possible in the technical sense.

I believe so - and it does make some sense since Nintendo has usually revealed multiple characters at E3s. Melee's E3 2001 presentation and Brawl's E3 2006 one did set something of a "precedent" (if one can call it that).

SC6 Nightmare... mayyyybe?

Beyond the Bamco thing (which makes any Bandai-Namco pick hard to judge because they've developed 2 Smash games and yet only have Pac-Man as playable) there's also the competition within the company and how Nightmare's fighting style would translate.

TBF, he's not impossible and got some things going for him like already having fought the Hero of Time, so Nightmare at least feels like a proper Dark Horse IMHO.

I'm a big fan of Agumon getting in. Not just a Namco side of Bamco, but a representative of the untapped digital pet fad of the 90s.
Also- the reboot, the Pokemon rivalry, the unique silhouette, the incredible gameplay of Digivolving....

I just want to go on record that I think a Mario character could very well come next, or be CP8.


But if it's not shown off to be one, and we don't see CP8 before this tournament... I just don't see us getting one period. It feels like if you're actually going to make a big deal out of this Tournament, it's now or never. I can 100% understand if CP7 isn't one that CP8 could be, but delayed cause lolCovid and shown off ala Joker, but if we get CP7 and it's not one, and we hear nothing of CP8 by this tournament, then ehhhhh.


CP7 could very well be a Mario character, but if it's not, I'm going to be very, very skeptical.

I mean, maybe licensing reasons? Maybe Mii costume licensing is handled differently than characters. The fact they're coming back as paid DLC, maybe they want them to be that way.

A lot of the filler costumes seemingly just got scrapped period afaik.

Considering the DLC costumes seem to all be actual ips, those seem gone forever.

Three Mario characters as DLC seems like the perfect amount to get people to turn against that series like they have FE and Pokemon.

To be fair, Nightmare is the incarnation of the sword the story circles around (No, not the Soulcalibur, surprisingly enough). Though, after Min Min, I feel like a game like Soulcalibur could have a character besides Nightmare. Seigfried's the most recurring protagonist, Xianghua and Kilik are recurring major characters and stared in the most recent installment, Talim won the popularity poll, etc. Though, I don't know much about Soulcalibur, so it's kinda hard for me to say.

Siegfried and Nightmare are actually the same person in SE, SC, SC2 and SC6. They had the same moveset even in the early games. Nightmare really only became his own character in 3 onwards. In soul calibur 2 theyre LITERALLY teh same char since nightmare and siegried share a slot. In the lore Siegfried is the main host usually in the plot since nightmare is kinda like the vendom symbiote in a lot of ways
they could have it be 4 nightmare alts and 4 siegfried alts

Like I said before, I think the Namco and Capcom costumes can come with whomever. It was that way in 4, the Mega Men/Monster Hunter costumes came with non-Capcom characters iirc and there were no Namco characters for 4 DLC, the costumes were dropped randomly

the Square ones tho? came with Cloud in 4, who was also from Square. And I don’t see them coming without a Square rep, so I def think Square’s gonna double dip. They just couldn’t come with Hero due to the DQ promotion in his pack

I think this is the best Square trinity in smash

Cloud - from a fan favorite game
Hero - from a legacy IP that defined a genre in the industry
Neku - from a cult classic with potentially an upcoming sequel
