You'd think we'd just patiently wait at this point and not knee-jerk react to every little thing and try to "will" a Direct into happening, lol.

It'll come when it comes.

For anybody wondering, this is what I meant by the "too much smoke" thing. Again, this is from the Geno thread, so take that however you please.

Either or, honestly. I could see the double presentation week panning out but it really doesn't have to. There was already a ton of smoke on Thursday as this post shows:

https://smashboards.com/threads/geno-♥♪-return-of-the-starsend-savior.446378/page-3117#post-24037563

As Matt reminded us, the big ass online updates are today too so we had seven coincidences before the weekend even began. From there, even more got added to the pile:

-King Zell's hints.

-Shinobi making a rare appearance for a cryptic tease.

-No More Heroes 1 and 3 ratings leaked over the weekend.

-Apparently the Smash site went down for a notable amount of time last night.

-10 brand new Amiibo slots appearing on the official Amiibo site as of last night:

https://www.nintendo.com/amiibo/line-up/

-Not sure if it's really a sign but a lot of people have pointed out that the official NoA Twitter has been ****posting pretty hard since Wednesday.

So... Yeah... Lots of smoke so expecting something to happen this week is not at all odd.

Mentioned in the Geno thread as well
Since this is coming from them, I am not sure what to think. I think they could be overhyping something that may not be the case. Even if it is the case, that does not mean this could be anything Smash related, provided if it really isn't. Either way, I don't think this means a Direct is coming.

People counting Shinobi as a Nintendo tease is hilarious

I went over what this month entails on Saturday
I wouldn't point to Shinobi as a specific Nintendo tease, just a general gaming one.
We know Sony have an event this month, Microsoft have something going by Jeff Grubb, Warner Bros have an event that includes the Batman and Suicide Squad games, QuakeCon might have something, GamesCon ends off the whole Summer Games Mess ****show, Street Fighter V has info in four days time etc.
It's a general gaming tease and the Sony Event just got confirmed for Thursday

Nintendo could still have something but it's such a broad tease that it doesn't really mean anything specific

Not to be rude to Fatman, but this is what I was talking about when it comes to the knee jerking Nintendo fans have been doing this year. Heck, I was doing it too sometimes.

Could a Direct happen? Sure. Could it not, and this is all reading way too deep into things? Absolutely. There isn't really much that's hardcore pointing to one right now other than Nintendo fans feel left out and want Nintendo to be like MS and Sony and drop a bunch of vague marketing trailers.

I only caution people on this because these are the exact same kind of points that were used for why "Nintendo absolutely has to do something this month!" back in January. Aaaaannnnd we all saw how that ended. It's important to hype responsibility with speculation and not just assume things without proper info or context.

Anything from the Geno thread should be taken with a huge grain of salt.
https://www.nintendo.com/amiibo/line-up/

The bit about the amiibos is clearly visible on the site.

(Screenshot spoiler-tagged for size, in case it's fixed later)

I'm assuming they're placeholders for the remaining DLC characters, since the amount matches up (Banjo, Terry, Byleth, Min Min, and the five unknown ones from FP2).

The Smash site did go down for a lot of people last night (there are enough comments and screenshots from separate users to make that clear), and a Taiwanese rating board did reveal that No More Heroes 1 will be coming to the Switch. I'm not sure what teases Shinobi or Zell/C. Tsubasa made recently (I don't really follow leakers/ResetEra all that closely), but everything mentioned there (aside from the comment about Nintendo of America's twitter, which seems to be a matter of interpretation) can be verified and linked to.

Did anyone visit the smash site last night only to find it went down? When did it happen (EST)?

No offense but Fatman brings up the same "too much smoke" argument like every other week.

Even if we do end up getting a direct, it's gonna feel like a monkeys and typewriters scenario.

Probably dodging a bullet TBH. If Travis got in, his gimmick wouldn't be for good boys and girls.
He can just shake the katana in a different position.
It's literally the easiest thing to tone down if Suda agrees with it.

As far as I can tell, it was down between 11:30 and 11:50 pm, EST. (roughly speaking; I'm just going by posts that people made when it happened)

Yeah, just shake it like a soda can. Maybe give him some extra idle animations like holding it up to his eye (Don't actually do that, kiddos) or checking his watch or something, because we obviously can't have the in-game version.

Pretty late, about 8:30-9:00ish in PT, so about 11:30-12:00 in ET. For me it didn't necessarily go down, but it took a while and the page went really screwy for a moment. As in, it was all white, the tabs were just text lined up in rows, etc. It fixed itself pretty quickly, though.

Probably yet again another fan rule that's been broken, in this case anytime NEW is removed, is the implication a character is getting announced soon. I won't be surprised if we have to wait until September at this point.
Jesus Christ, Michael, stop calling any observable pattern based on precedence a fan rule. E3 didn't happen this year when it normally did. That doesn't mean E3 is a fan rule.

That is of course, if Suda51 is ok with the alterations to Travis. The creators of Bayonetta were fine with her alterations, but I imagine Mai was sacred in SNK’s eyes and were like if you’re gonna censor her best not to put her in period (explains why we didn’t even get a Spirit with the Camilla treatment)

I don't know that I agree. Sure, we had evidence of Hero coming in the form of "Brave" and leakers, but the fact that Dragon Quest XIS was being pushed so hard, at least to me, suggested pretty clear what was happening.

Then, with Banjo, the collaborations between Microsoft had people thinking Banjo could have a shot.

But really, that's not my point. If we aren't considering possibilities then like...what the hell is the point in posting here? Just to say who we want and then get salty when somebody else says they don't want it?

I get the vibe that people won't discuss such information as any indication because they don't want to be "wrong" about their prediction.

As the dude who stanned Resident Evil (known as Biohazard in Japan) for months, I know what it feels like. But I don't really care anymore. People are more afraid of being wrong than the potentially interesting conversations we could have.

Really, you want to talk about things "literally meaning nothing", we have folks who cling to any or all leaks or suspect that chair colors indicate future characters but won't touch game releases/official material with a ten foot pole. That seems to be the opposite of what should be happening imho.
This is moreso a matter of "if everything is, then nothing is"

So many collaborations outside of Smash are happening with regards to third parties on the Nintendo Switch but seeing as a lot of these games aren't going to be getting anything in Smash at all. This is why I say they, "literally mean nothing" because Nintendo has been giving a big push to a lot of games. Now of course I personally am not telling people not to talk about it, I in fact encourage it. I'm merely stating why people will shut down conversations because of it. I mean I've brought up such ideas with regards to characters like Crash Bandicoot and Travis Touchdown possibly being added as a result of the relationship between Nintendo and their respective companies as well as their home IPs having a presence on the Switch. But I could probably list a bunch of other companies that have also been given a strong push by Nintendo but the most they'd get in Smash is a Spirit Board. It's kinda like throwing darts at a board, of course some are gonna stick.

I think it's moreso people being afraid of disappointment rather than being 'right'. "Oh look another game I don't care about is being promoted? Eh. Means nothing for Smash. Next subject." In most cases fans would more than happy to be proven wrong if the character is actually someone they give a damn about. I know I was when Cloud was revealed in the last game.

Not just that, but with a small cameo at most in the background, is it worth battling the IP owners to redesign her just enough? The answer is no. Same with the spirit.

If they wanted her playable, that'd be a completely different thing.

At the end of the day, what's stopping people from saying, "Yeah, I think this might mean X is in!"?

In my humble opinion, it's because people don't want to be "wrong", which is largely structured by the way society views success and failure. There's an inherent fear in failure, and that seems to get worse when put into what is essentially a public place that involves the hype beast that is Smash Bros.

Sure, I'm Old Man Jones. But this isn't how it always was. Usually people would take stances and defend what they thought with coherent arguments, but it seems that largely has been traded for "f-FAN RULE" and "EVERYTHING IS INCONSEQUENTIAL! REPENT TO YOUR NIHILIST OGRELORDS" whereas that makes for conversations of little interest, no progress, and no depth.

I'd kinda argue that that's part of why the fanbase quickly devolves into waiting for the next character, because there isn't much to talk about because...nobody is actually making an argument that isn't met with, "FaN RuLe" or a “It could happen, but *gasp* it also might not” type of response. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with that either, it just doesn’t make for conversation that’s all that exciting.

Eh, but what do I know. I'm just the 27 year old boomer of the thread/community.

About these unknown amiibos, it's just the Animal Crossing Amiibo cards.

You can just use inspect element on the images and it says the animal crossing character from the amiibo card series in the HTML code.

So this is probably a false alarm.

To play devil's advocate for a second: there's a big difference between tapping into an untapped market (like an official Switch release in China) and tapping into a market that doesn't care. For example, Sakurai's Banjo & Kazooie presentation made the Xbox trend for a little while in Japan, but it's a bit of a stretch to say it made the hardcore Xbox crowd have any interest in Smash - the characters simply didn't serve that purpose.

Even characters who take the Smash fandom by surprise, like Bayonetta and Cloud, have an arguably bigger staying power with it than, say, Gordon Freeman.

While it's nice to expand the playerbase, the general overlap must be taken into account, especially because there's no way to guarantee that you'll be able to sell to all - or even the majority - of that support base you're crossing over with.

Hell, as someone who supports a character with zero current Nintendo overlap, I'd argue this is probably one of the reasons why Riot is doing League spinoffs instead of just making new IPs - that way they can branch into new markets, but also stay safe with a portion of the audience they already have.
That is true - that said, Nintendo doesn't need 100 Million+ in China to consider their long term plans a success. The typical console sees 10-20 million (if not a bit more with the PlayStation family) in their respective major regions. If Nintendo can for example sniff 5-10 million in an "Other" region at some point in the relative near future they'll be happy.

That's probably a reason China in particular caught Nintendo's eyes - an estimate of 3 million (again, before AC and Ring Fit saw strong successes there) is close to that 5-10 million, and Nintendo's been trying there since 2003.

Jesus Christ, Michael, stop calling any observable pattern based on precedence a fan rule. E3 didn't happen this year when it normally did. That doesn't mean E3 is a fan rule.
Well, maybe we should include this in the "fan rule" category:

I would take a screenshot but idk how to, lol.

Anyway in the HTML, it says that the characters are: Resetti, Lottie, Digby, KK, Isabelle, Tom Nook, Isabelle (from series 2), Kicks and Reese.

I'm guessing Nintendo is going to allow us to buy these cards separately?

As Travis is getting a ton of discussion, I think he'd work best with a gimmick that's essentially a reverse Limit, every time he lands a move, his battery meter goes down and he'll eventually need to recharge it. This idea already kind of exists with Inkling's ink, so it's especially easy to see happening and the drawbacks wouldn't feel too much of a detriment as recharging is easy

I do gotta ask something

Back when Both Doom-Slayer and Master Chief were both heavily discussed, there was always the sentiment that it could only be 1 or the other because while they are Different from each other in Specialties and Specifics (Doom-Slayer is more Aggressive compared to Chief and both have different weaponry), they both are Ultimately cut from the same cloth and would have alot of Mechanical Similarity and perhaps Audience Similarity for them to be in the Same Pass

Is there any other Duo or Group of Characters you feel that way for?

So basically Decidueye vs Incineroar 2.0?

My takes:

- Rex vs Elma: assuming the former’s Mii costume isn’t the nail in his coffin, I have a hard time imagining them both happening. It would be ideal, but hardly anything in life is right?
- Lloyd vs Any other Bandai Namco character: with Heihachi out of the running and Gil having no realistic chance, it’s between Lloyd and almost any other Namco character, even a different Tales character like Yuri or one of the Arise protags
- Geno vs Any other Square Enix character: I don’t think I need to explain this one

I think that about covers what I think
