Geralt is very different from Dracula and Alucard as the latter are two are in the public domain and based off of the way they appear in Castlevania and former is still own by his original creator Andrzej Sapkowski.

Though admittedly unlike a bunch of characters from different media like Goku, Spider-Man, Darth Vader, etc Geralt is way more associated as a video game character then he is a book character these days and yeah if we were to get a character whose original didn't come from video game's Geralt would be the safest bet by far.

Correct me if I'm wrong, as I've never read the Witcher novels, but... aren't there enough differences between the Witcher games and books to put Geralt in a gray area? Like, the games do their own thing and aren't just an adaptation?

If Type-Moon wanted to they could have Arthurian imagery alongside Saber (if they haven't already, I'm really unfamiliar with the franchise) without much of a problem. Just like Kid Icarus borrows very loosely from Greek mythology for its roster, or Prince of Persia has distinctincly Persian style to it.

Fate has already dwelved a lot in Arthurian mythology, having its own versions of Lancelot, Agravain, Mordred, Gawain, Galahad, Bedivere, Tristan, Gareth, Merlin, Morgan Le Fay and others as characters within the series, there even being an audio drama about Saber's backstory, which is pretty much a recount of King Arthur's story.

And that's not to mention the large juggernaut that is Fate/Grand Order has way too many versions of her which dwelve into showing more Arthurian lore in that universe and has two expansive story chapters completely based around it; to the point even a joke summer version of her in a maid-themed swimsuit uses an actual weapon from myth (turned into a rifle for some reason). Well, except for the alien Jedi, the alien Sith and the casino bunnygirl versions.

...Look, seasonal events in that game are weird.

If the important distinction, in your mind, is that the character itself not debut in a book, then by that standard characters like Cal Kestis and Android 21 are all clear.

I prefer to take a more nuanced stance, where what matters is what the franchise is best known for. You can put Geralt in Smash, and nobody could argue that he wouldn't fit the bill of "gaming icons clash".

I don't even think the Public Domain has much to do with Smash honestly. The Witcher Games are considered the same franchise as the books. The Castlevania property started with a video game thus Castlevania is still considered a Video game franchise. Even with the existence of an anime.

I wouldn't say Geralt is likely, but if this is indeed the case, it would put him in a similar gray area as the Warriors series and Fate. Even if he technically is the same Geralt as in the books, if the games aren't canon, they're pretty much CDPR's own derivative work.

How about Dynasty Warriors? It’s Koei-Techmo’s most popular series and all it’s characters are adaptations of public domain semi-historical figures.

I'm pretty much banking on a Dynasty Warriors rep in Vol 2 for similar reasons to why people think Hayabusa would rep Koei-Tecmo (except for the NES origins of course). They're a case that's more similar to Dracula being Public Domain and Dr Kawashima's existence in Smash than The Witcher is, and while the characters, the settings, and the story are more or less the same from the source material, it's Omega-Force's spin on all of that. It's also worth mentioning stuff like music, character designs, dialogue, hypothetical scenarios, and such are original to their work as well.

Quite frankly, there aren't that many people within the Smash community that knows much about Dynasty Warriors, so it should come to no surprise the series is still overlooked super hard despite LoZ and FE both having Musou spinoff titles. Even when you consider the people that don't see it happening because of real people being ineligible, there's rarely anybody bringing up the series to begin with for doubters to say their piece.

Honestly the recent Xbox showcase made me go from considering to buy it day 1 to just waiting a couple years since there really wasn't even that screamed system seller.

If I'm being completely honest, Microsoft and Sony have shown some interesting stuff, but a lot of it is next year or TBD release dates. There ain't much "Gotta have it day one" material for me. They look like super dope consoles though, so I might look into one of 'em in a few years.

Also, I feel like I'm the only one here who has been enjoying what Nintendo's put out this year lol. Like, Animal Crossing, Club House, Paper Mario, and all the DLC have been pretty great so far, I personally can't really complain. Knowing about the future would be nice, but the world is all kinds of crazy right now so I can't really fault them for getting blindsided by stuff and evidently having issues. I'd honestly prefer Nintendo keep their employees safe and do what they got to do in their own timing rather than rush something to me. Plus, if these games are gonna be delayed anyways, what's the point in knowing about them now? Just to know they exist, I guess? IDK, I'd much rather wait until they can give me as close to solid info and release timing as they can.

This goes for FP7 as well. I mean, Min Min is still relatively new and some are acting like we haven't gotten anything in months.

Honestly, the witcher is a complex history. The author hates the games and separates them from his series. The show does the same. I think the games could technically be it's own thing and that might be a loophole

I think "technically" is the way they are NOT their own thing, and why it's not a loophole.

Also, I call BS on the show being separate from the games. Caville's performance is CLEARLY based more on the games than it is on the novel. Even though the events of the show are following the plot of the books more closely.

E - Choosing Elma (Spirit Promotion!) here. Due to her having a lot of potential on her own accord.

Q - Quote (Cave Story): Not much else to say, Very versatile moveset, emblematic for indies in general and comes loaded with a lot of possible options for his hypotheoretical Challenger Pack.

U - Choosing a Dota (2) character here because I can. Ursa. Bear whose passive is that he deals extra stacking damage per attack if he can land them within the passive's window (or the extra stacks get reset). For that he has the ability to jump a short distance quickly, increase his own attack speed for a limited # of swipes and ensure he takes much less damage himself for a short period of time (with cooldowns attached of course). Could be incredibly oppressive and / or shut down depending on the matchup, but I want to see something like the passive implemented because that game is filled to the brim with crazy mechanics.

X - Xemnas just for the double lightsabre spinning gameplay (Xenahort could fill the same general playstyle), or Megaman X (Spirit Promotion!).

That's true - that said, both Sony and Microsoft are banking on cross-platform (current gen or computer) games to help fill the launch lineups until the shown games begin arriving. Microsoft is especially leaning on the idea with their focus on Game Pass as well as Series X versions of games getting the 4K treatment and all that.

People think he said that because Sakurai explained why James Bond couldn't be in Smash in a column about Melee, then somebody told somebody else that Sakurai brought up James Bond in a Melee column, then that person interpreted it as Sakurai considering James Bond. It's basically a game of telephone and it's how a lot of fan misinterpretations start, such as "the entire Fighters Pass will be third party" and "Rex and an ARMS character were planned to be in Smash Ultimate but got cut".

Sakurai stated that he did not include James Bond from GoldenEye 007 owing to concerns over Bond's realistic weaponry that included handguns and similar items. Furthermore, the copyright to the game would be owned by Rare, and a number of other copyright issues, such as those involving the likeness of his actor, Pierce Brosnan, and rights involving the film series itself, would have led to numerous legal challenges in development of Melee[10]

Sakurai's statements regarding Banjo and James Bond have led to a rumor that they were actually considered for inclusion, but he didn't actually say this.

NGL as a Melee fan I would've love to see characters like BK, Ayumi Tachibana, Sonic and James Bond wavedashing all over the place. But I'm happy that Melee turned out as it did - it gave beautiful moments like this:

If Geralt is considered eligible because many people know him more as a "video game character" rather than a book character; then by that same logic would Saber be considered ineligible because many people know her more as a "anime character" rather than a game character? Or do they both approach a gray line?

I personally don't think Geralt is happening because IIRC the books aren't even all that unpopular and in Europe, they were quite successful even before the game series started. But I know that's just me, but I'm curious as to see what other people think.
