The reception/sales of a character's game has very little to do with their moveset potential, which is what should really be given the most attention when considering characters. I've been seeing this argument a lot lately, especially when it comes to relevant first-parties like Rex, SwSh Pokemon, and Paper Mario.

Just because a ton of people think a game sucks doesn't mean the character themselves suck. They could actually have a ton of potential for becoming a very unique character. Likewise, a character doesn't deserve to get in Smash just because their game is popular or critically acclaimed. Their game could sell several million copies, but that by itself doesn't magically give them enough material for a moveset people would okay spending money on.

Honestly, it just feels like gatekeeping; someone shooting down the character without even trying to consider what they could bring to the table.

It's kinda ironic your post is about how gatekeeping on not liking a character or their game is bad, when you gatekeep in this very post about how immensely successful games shouldn't get in because of moveset potential, an argument completely irrelevant when we have a piranha plant with an almost fully unique moveset. Maybe it's me, but I find "I do not like this character" less gatekeep-y than arbitrarily deciding what does or doesn't have moveset potential

Game and Watch is a weird character to hate when G&W basically started handheld gaming, preceding the Gameboy.

That and the Game and Watch Gallery games on the GB/GBC/GBA were my jam back in the day so I won't hear any ****talking about :ultgnw:

Retro reps are typically meant to be NES only.

Simon's been in a lot more games than that.

It's like saying Ridley is a retro rep for using his NES size.

The way I see it is that Simon Belmont is just Simon Belmont, a character who just so happens to star in a retro game just like a few other fighters. I don't know whether or not he counts as a "retro character" (I do get old school vibes from him though), but he was certainly introduced to the world in that era, and his moveset in Smash seems to take inspiration from said retro games.

Seems we swing between "party member from a SNES RPG is a lock" and "only characters who have been inducted into the hall of fame, are known by my grandma and referenced in a Rick and Morty Episode can get in!" modes quite wildly.

if Ryu was to be added, I assume he'd be sort of an amalgam of both the classic and reboot selves, sorta like how they handled Simon and Richter
where certain aspects the walk cycle are styled after Ninja Gaiden NES, but his overall attack and movement animation is more like the reboot
and having both the retro and modern designs for alts is a must

Still strange to think that Ninja Gaiden was the Dark Souls (in it was an intentionally and unapologetically difficult game) of the XB360/PS3 era but then just... stopped.

I keep saying this over and over, but I think the people who keep saying how Ultimate didn't add a "retro rep" like the previous games need to realize that Ice Climbers were the only characters added for that specific purpose.

:ultpit:: A legimately popular character request back in the day, per admitted by Sakurai himself. Essentially Brawl's equivalent to K. Rool and Banjo, fan favorites that happened to be old and forgotten.
:ultgnw::ultrob::ultduckhunt:: Sakurai has referred to these not as "retro reps", but "surprise characters". Piranha Plant is intended to be Ultimate's equivalent.
:ulticeclimbers:: The one true "retro rep" in Smash. Initially added in because Sakurai wanted a one-off NES character in Smash, and they beat out the likes of Bubbles and Urban Champion with their duo fighter gimmick.

Like really the fact that we got Piranha Plant in this game pretty much shows the notion of the "retro character" is completely null outside of just the Ice Climbers. Pit, Game & Watch, Duck Hunt and R.O.B may be old, but they were included for other reasons outside of just "oh i need an old character in this game ahuh" as the ICs were.

Didn't see this get posted in the thread, but the LEGO NES was formally revealed on Nintendo's Twitter at 8 am EST:
There was a problem fetching the tweet
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't announcements usually happen at 9 instead?

So we could still foreseeably have a second announcement today? Has Nintendo ever announced multiple projects/events on the same day before outside of a direct?
I feel like this exact scenario and question have been said anywhere from dozens to hundreds of times in this thread alone, and the answer being posted never actually makes a difference.

That said, yes, but nearly all of those aforementioned times still didn't have the news people were waiting on.

nintendo of japan coordinates direct schedules and the lego NES (for obvious famicom reasons) hasn't been announced on their social media, so it won't have any bearing on whether or not there's something in the next 50 minutes

that said, insiders like natedrake don't seem to be budging from the 20th, so i'm not getting my hopes up until next week

I can't wait for the inevitable LEGO SMB 1 speedruns.

Seriously, it looks pretty decent at least, and it's good to see more come out of that collaboration.

We'll wait and see but I don't invest too much in leakers.

A good leaker will leak something once and never use the same account twice.

Would those be “Who can turn the crank through the game fastest?” or “Who can build the set the fastest?”

Knowing how the speedrunning community works, both categories separetely. And a third category (named "100 %" perhaps) where both are combined.

Still strange to think that Ninja Gaiden was the Dark Souls (in it was an intentionally and unapologetically difficult game) of the XB360/PS3 era but then just... stopped.
Appears that Ninja Gaiden 3 (PS3 / 360 / Wii U, 2012) was seen as mediocre, the mobile title 100 Man'nin no Ninja Gaiden had its NA release cancelled (2012) and Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z (2014) was seen as mediocre-to-bad.

While it's a cursory glance, those projects really did make a major dent in NG's fortunes - considering there's not been any mainline NG titles since Yaiba.

This person’s only leaked dates of announcements instead of what the announcements are. So I doubt they’re something Nintendo actively cares about stopping.

5 minutes after 10:00 and nothing new from Nintendo. Not particularly surprising, but disappointing nonetheless.

Here's to the 20th?

No???
Why is the idea of a direct happening next week suddenly unlikely?
Well, this twitter account who claims to be a prostitute having sex with Nintendo employees who was wrong as recently as 10 days ago was wrong again, this means everyone is unreliable...
