Well doesn't exactly by any means she might be an lock otherwise...

But then again given how every discussion has been discussed I can see why people were speculating.
Oh- it by no means makes her a lock. Or even really all that more possible.

The release has her on my mind a bit more- and quite frankly, I'm not a fan of those games (and feel a bit blue balled whenever I play- whether it's Yoshi, Pokemon, or Lip, anytime I've played, even as a kid, I felt completely ripped off at the branding. Like i'm promised a game with cool characters and am getting a bland white wash of a series that doesnt have anything to do with characters).

Even still, I do wish we had a fairy like character. Kamek or Ashley or Lip or who knows. There are so many options and we still have none.

I don't think the problem is too many swordsmen in Smash. Yeah, some feel pretty samey, but even Marty and Roy (despite being semi-clones) are pretty different.

Really, that just sounds like an "I hate Fire Emblem" argument. Especially when people overblow it to the point of saying that Meta-Knight and Link are both swordies, so we don't need more, as if they're anything alike.

Side Note: I still can't grasp Meta Knight's playstyle. I keep trying to treat him like a sword Jiggs, but that's really not what he is, and I can never really get in the groove with him.
I'm so happy I'm not the only one. Everyone talked about Brawl MK being some high-tier god, and all I could do with him was glide my way to a SD.

I kept getting distracted with the fact that we don't have a fairy-like character in a game with over 80 characters.

:ultjigglypuff:PUFF!:ultjigglypuff:
EDIT: Damn you, image uploader! Ruining my jokes here...

Where is all this Lip discussion suddenly coming from?

Haven't really caught up in this thread since the last few days.
Panel de Pon was among a bunch of new Virtual Console games released in the last week, and like anything else that releases on Switch, people assume Smash news.
...but everyone's not doing that for the Elder Scrolls: Blades release when it got shadowdropped on Thursday :urg:

I'm really surprised at the lack of 4chan 'leaks' going around that guess which ARMS character is getting added and then attach other bits of 'information' to that they can peddle as true if they guessed the ARMS character correctly (which is easy cuz it's 100% Min Min).

I dunno about 4chan, but...
*looks both ways*
I heard from my neighbor's cousin's sister's mother's dog's grandma's uncle that Barq was the ARMS character. All by himself. Byte isn't even a spirit.

And if anyone asks, you didn't hear this from me.

It is Spring Man because the protagonist/mascot always comes first.

I also expect the Hero route with Ribbon Girl, Ninjara and Minmin.

Yes some may say they play differently and might have different waist sizes and dimensions but

Didn't we just have a gaming website screenshot some random 4chan post and unironically call it a leak?

If you're talking about the one that claimed that Spring Man was going to have 7 alternate costumes, then we didn't really take that one seriously. The person who brought it up saw the news article on it, and then reread the rumors claims and went "oh wait never mind". Then everyone poked fun at how fake it was, and then people started lamenting the fact that people would believe this kind of thing (even though no one did), and then we probably went on some tangential meta rant about the fanbase.

Long conversations on this forum can get kinda twisted when people can join in at any point with only a page or two of context.

Side Note: I still can't grasp Meta Knight's playstyle. I keep trying to treat him like a sword Jiggs, but that's really not what he is, and I can never really get in the groove with him.
If it helps: Jigglypuff's jumps have a lot of horizontal reach, Meta Knight's doesn't have as much. Generally Jigglypuff's gameplan is to Wall of Pain people off it while also being able to threaten Rest. Jigglypuff's combos tend to be very horizontal. MK meanwhile thrives much more on vertical ladder combos, taking the initiative and choosing when to rushdown to keep his opponent off balance.

Inb4 toothpaste boi
Everytime I hear that nickname I can't help but to wonder what would've happened if ARMS was sponsored by lets say Colgate.

I think the "too many swordfighters" complaint is more straightforward than people are making it out to be.

Take a look at how many swordfighters were added in each game.

64: :link64:
Melee: :younglinkmelee::marthmelee::roymelee:
Brawl: :toonlink::metaknight::ike:
3DS/Wii U: :4robinm::4lucina::4corrin::4miisword::4shulk::4cloud:
Ultimate: :ultchrom::ultbyleth::ulthero:

Even if a sword is nothing more than aesthetic, it's still a pretty common weapon in Smash characters. Plus, a majority of these characters use their sword for almost everything outside their specials.

I can understand why it might feel samey to some people. Yeah, they all play differently, but it does feel a little less exciting when a character's weapon of choice isn't something less common like a whip, an axe, a bow, or any of the dozens of other weapons to choose from. Instead, it's the weapon that's shared with over 15 other characters.

They'd probably overdo the tooth flashy thing and show us a probably not all that accurate simulations of how toothpaste removes plaque.

I'm not so sure about that. There isn't any vitriol surrounding fist fighters but...

And you could probably argue there are more than the ones I've listed regardless of whether or not you agree with all of them.

If you could boil it down to one reason, it would probably just be the general hatred surrounding Fire Emblem since that's where half of the sword characters come from.

Honestly the funniest part about this is not including the characters from actual fighting games

So we have 16 characters with swords, 17 if you want to count Ganondorf. Heck, let's go further: these are the characters who have at least one attack of the "sword" type:
:ultbyleth::ultcloud::ultcorrin::ultganondorf::ultgreninja::ulthero::ultike::ultjoker::ultkirby::ultlink::ultmarth::ultlucina::ultmegaman::ultmetaknight::ultswordfighter::ultrobin::ultroy::ultchrom::ultsheik::ultshulk::ulttoonlink::ultyounglink:

Out of 83 total characters, including ARMS but none of the unrevealed fighters, since I think we can assume that the ARMS character is not a swordie.

That's around 25% of the roster. And this includes characters like Kirby, whose only sword attack is his Final Cutter.

Compared to people who use hands (fists, slaps) to attack, based on who has at least one attack using the "arm" attack type (just 'arm,' not 'elbow):
:ultbanjokazooie::ultbayonetta::ultbowser::ultbowserjr::ultbyleth::ultfalcon::ultcharizard::ultdarkpit::ultdiddy::ultdk::ultdoc::ultduckhunt::ultfalco::ultfox::ultganondorf::ultgreninja::ulthero::ulticeclimbers::ultike::ultincineroar::ultinkling::ultisabelle::ultjigglypuff::ultjoker::ultken::ultkingdedede::ultkrool::ultkirby::ultlittlemac::ultlucario::ultlucas::ultluigi::ultmario::ultmegaman::ultmewtwo::ultbrawler::ultgunner::ultness::ultolimar::ultpacman::ultpeach::ultdaisy::ultpichu::ultpit::ultrob::ultridley::ultrosalina::ultryu::ultsamus::ultdarksamus::ultsheik::ultshulk::ultsimon::ultrichter::ultsnake::ultsonic::ultsquirtle::ult_terry::ultvillager::ultwario::ultwiifittrainer::ultwolf::ultzelda::ultzss:

The "Swordie" problem is just the fact that :ultmarth::ultlucina::ultroy::ultchrom: all have the same base moveset (and :ultike: has similar specials, despite a different kit) and :ultlink::ultyounglink::ulttoonlink: are also very similar. Nobody every tries to say that "Ugh, Captain Falcon is such a clone of Snake!" even though both are heroic-figured men in spandex. But the second someone shows up with a sword, we either have a Marth clone, a Link clone, or possibly a Cloud clone if people recognize a zweihänder is different from a broadsword.

EDIT:
If you could boil it down to one reason, it would probably just be the general hatred surrounding Fire Emblem since that's where half of the sword characters come from.
Wanted to add this in - this is exactly it. And yeah, there are 16 swordsmen in the original post: :ultlink::ultyounglink::ultmarth::ultroy::ulttoonlink::ultmetaknight::ultike::ultrobin::ultlucina::ultcorrin::ultswordfighter::ultshulk::ultcloud::ultchrom::ultbyleth::ulthero:. Exactly half of them are Fire Emblem. And of the other 8, three are Links (plus a fourth with a sword and shield), and two of the remaining are JRPG stars with a BFS. And then the other two are a Mii who borrows from all of the above and Meta Knight.

I can see people thinking that the characters are really samey: 8/16 Fire Emblem. 4/16 SnB. 10/16 JRPGs. 3/16 BFS. Even though I think that any new character with a sword could be plenty unique.

It’s also worth noting that most gaming protagonists in the industry typically use a gun or a sword, or their fists. At least it seems that way.

Sure, a lance or axe would be a cool weapon, but that’s not Sakurai/Nintendo at fault there, but the character designers and creators who continue to create characters who use the same weapons.

It’s understandable that characters who use those weapons, and typically end up not being the “protagonist” (though Three Houses was close) aren’t in Smash, just on the basis of it being a mascot crossover.

At the very least, the sword users all play differently which is what matters most I would say.

Now, the whole "cartoon vs. anime" thing might seem a bit silly to some, but I can kinda see the issue. You have to admit that Smash 4 did introduce a whole buttload of more realistic proportioned/"anime" characters in comparison to prior entries. Just look at Brawl. For ironically the game with the darkest/grittiest art style it was the one that introduced the largest amount of cartoony/weird characters. Meanwhile, the only "not-normal" (as Dedede would put it) newcomers were Snake, Pit, ZSS and Ike. Then you go over to Smash 4 and uh, holy hell. I think that's why there's been a rise in complaints about there being two many anime swordsman or whatever. Smash 4's DLC being comprised almost entirely out of these kinds of characters didn't exactly help, either.

Now of course Little Mac and WFT are distinct enough and certainly aren't "anime" but then you have the other characters there like Palutena, Robin, Lucina, Corrin, Cloud, Shulk and such that just kinda sorta blend in with each other. I imagine that kinda peeved a certain group of Smash fans, especially the ones that, at the time, were hoping for characters like K. Rool or Ridley.

To be fair, quite a few of the characters you listed attack with more than just their fists, and that's excluding specials. Some use headbutts, some use their tails, some use their claws, and some have special elemental powers.

That's why I think a lot of this stems from the stuff outside specials, like Smash attacks, tilts, and aerials. If most swordfighters were handled like Corrin or Byleth, I don't think the complaints would be as numerous. As of now though, most swordies use their sword for most, if not all of their attacks outside specials (:ultlink::ulttoonlink::ultyounglink::ultmetaknight::ultmarth::ultlucina::ultroy::ultchrom::ultike::ultrobin::ultswordfighter::ultshulk::ulthero:)

I'm fine with swordies (heck, I'm supporting Zacian), but I do wish people would stop brushing the argument off and quit assuming everyone who has this problem just hates FE. Personally, I'd like to see Sakurai do more with stuff outside the sword, and I'm a little disappointed he didn't try incorporating some of Hero's spells into his Smash attacks and aerials.

You know, all this does is prove that the 'aneem swooerd bad' people are laughably childish if one game outnumbering the cartoon characters is enough to make it a 'serious concern', especially as Ultimate's evened out as of ARMS now

Ive never been able to understand this argument- even the words don't make sense.

Obviously, every fighter, to some extent, needs to be able to use it's body.
Fighting in a physical means using your physical form.
Everyone as what they are born with.

Of course all characters can punch or kick.
How is this even comparable to a premade weapon of any sort?

It is interesting how things change though. I remember that, before Corrin's edition, it was Pokémon that was the "too many reps" series and that was when there were only 6 of them. Now nobody really seems to care (and are open to more) even though we have 10 now.

EDIT: Not saying that's a bad thing mind you.

That's why I said "if we could". It's not really that simple.

The fact that Link, Wario, and Bayonetta don't use their default costumes here like everyone else bothers me greatly.

The thing that has always annoyed me was when some people would go to such absurd lengths to say Marth and Ike are incredibly similar that they said "they basically have the same specials," all because they have chargeable neutral specials, counter down specials, and side specials that move them forward.

Like, if that's your barometer for similarity, then congratulations. You've just deemed Greninja a Marth clone.

Pokemon is also quite a different thing.
In the early 2000s it was a phenomenon.
It is studied sociological, psychologically, economically, for the craze it was.
It is the biggest media franchise, by money earned, of all time.

Versus ... anything else is laughable.
Much less Fire Emblem.

Literally who cares?

At least we are getting more characters, Sakurai seems to have attempted to cool down the "problem" and now we have a Game including some of the longest most-wanted picks in the series.

Besides, instead of complaining about artstyles we should be pushing Nintendo and the Smash team to fix their online.

Because we have more of them than the ones with the one specific weapon and we have people who shun the likes of say, Dante, solely for having a specific weapon despite using it completely differently from any other character but cheer when reading a character who's entire fanmoveset is the same old normals we've seen before many times

Wow you compared Dancing Blade to a recovery move? Smh fake Marth fan I bet you don't even like Fire Emblem

Yeah, but it's still silly that the public opinion went.

Ok. Pokémon's cool. ZOMG! TOO MANY FIRE EMBLEM CHARACTERS!!!

EDIT EDIT: It makes me wonder if people just hated Corrin that much.
EDIT: It's also interesting that this has never been a critique of Super Mario even though they have nearly as many characters.

I don't really think it's fair to exclude a character's specials when those are often their most defining moves. And how often do you see people complain about Link or Metaknight for being swordsmen, outside of examples like this where they're trying to demonstrate just how many sword characters there are?

The real issue people have is the admittedly large number of FE characters. This is a dead horse but just look at the like at the dislike ratio on Byleth's reveal video - yeah the amount of likes is still higher but there are a lot of people who are tired of all the attention Fire Emblem in particular gets.

"Swordsmen" is also too frequently used downplay what makes a character unique. People where complaining about Hero before he even came out for being a swordsmen, but he ended up being a character with fairly mediocre normals but amazing specials, making him more of a mage/spell-sword character then a pure swordsmen.

I cannot speak on behalf of everyone, but I think that what people really want outside of sword characters, is a unique silhouette.
It has nothing to do with weapon, from my standpoint.
From the first game, Sakurai has emphasized the value of a unique silhouette- he constantly emphasizes that echoes are such based on the similar bone structure above all else, that characters must be visually discernable from a distance (as far as not allowing some, like Wolf, in due to not being different enough), and of course, we cannot forget the notorious 'Challenger Approaching.'

This is also something generally true for Nintendo games- where almost all characters have a unique silhouette. Particularly traditionally (which is logical, as early gaming had less definition, and thus variant characters stood out more).
This leads many to 'feel' that the more unique silhouette's are 'more Nintendo,' and thus, more deserving.

Either way, it has a strong history in Smash.

Believe me, there's still a lot of people opposed to another Pokemon.

Anyways, Pokemon does have an advantage in the sense that all of its characters save Pichu are completely unique in both appearance and playstyle. I don't think I've ever seen anyone complain about getting another Pokemon character because they were convinced that whoever got in would be a clone of some sorts.

Well, clearly a certain group of fans feel that way, considering the "too many swordsman" thing. I personally don't, but I noticed the complaints regarding that were kinda sparked mostly by Smash 4's newcomer lineup containing much more non-cartoon characters than previous games.

Honestly the impression I've always gotten is that most of the people who complain about this are probably just SNES/N64 era Nintendo fans who grew up playing platformers/mascot games and western oriented games like Mario, DKC, Banjo, basically all of Rare's stuff, and don't like how kinda sorta more Japanese oriented Nintendo became afterwards. And naturally, when they began to push for characters like Ridley or K. Rool to be in Smash 4, only to get characters like Robin, Palutena, Corrin, etc instead, well...

I always found the "unique silhouette" talking point equally as disingenuous as it is pretentious, personally. Like you can just say you want more cartoons. You don't need to have your head make up a third of your height to be a good character.
