As someone who actually played Color Splash and didn't criticize it for simply being similar to Sticker Star, I wouldn't mind if they made a game that further improved things. It's no Thousand Year Door, but I can't deny that I did enjoy playing Color Splash enough to where I'd recommend it to a friend.

Anyways, Paper Mario's chances skyrocketed for the time being. Let's see where this goes.

Even just looking at the thumbnail of the video revealing the new Paper Mario game gave off Sticker Star/Color Splash vibes to me. Guess it's good that I had my expectations in check from the beginning lol.

But yeah can't say I'm interested in it. Even if the battle system is improved from SS (and CS? never played it so can't really comment on that one), it still has the problem that it seems allergic to wanting to create original characters and just drown us in a sea of toads. I'd say "atleast bowser doesn't seem to be a villain" but they could still find a way to twist things to make him a villain, so *shrug*

Yeah. While it doesn't seem to have an overabundance of Toads (but who knows), Shy Guys seem to be replacing them as the uninteresting copy-paste NPC (which is pretty much what happened in the previous game whenever it didn't makes sense for there to be Toads). Bob-omb seemed to be a fun companion, but there isn't really an excuse for them not to give him a unique design and name. At least Bowser Jr. and Kamek aren't just species, the character. Unless they call him Majikoopa. I will not forgive them if they do. Kammy Koopa fans already have it rough, don't slight the Kamek fans too.

Also if they make Bowser the final boss because he decided to be a twit with whatever McGuffin there is I'm going to be kinda upset, but not too much, as this is not a surprise (It's happened like, what? Two? Three time already?).

But for now can we just appreciate that a gag reference to Star Wars is now one of the main villains, and the irony that origami is the bad guy even though the entire world is already origami?

Elongated Man is DC's rippoff of Plastic Man, created because they forgot that they already owned Plastic Man...

Yeah, Paper Mario single handily rose up as the most likely Mario character to be added as a newcomer for Pass 2. On one hand I'm happy about this because I like Paper Mario, but on the other hand I'm disappointed because it means Waluigi could miss the bus yet again.

While the new Paper Mario game does seem promising and could help the Paper friend's chances, I still won't say that Paper Mario is highly likely.

Would be cool if he got in, but a recent new game doesn't always mean a character could get in.

As usual, a matter of waiting and seeing.

At the very least, his chances have gone up considerably. He's in a better position than he would've been if there were no new game coming out this year.

Yeah, let's not forget we got quite a few games announced before/during the first pass and we got only one1.25 characters who directly tied into a recent release.

I don't think anyone is saying Paper Mario is a lock, anyway. At least for now. I'm not a fan of his games but I've always found the idea of him in Smash interesting. It'll be fun if this leads people into discussing him seriously again.

If they do add him, I really hope they give him a Tattle ability as an Easter Egg, like Codex and Palutena's Guidance. Bonus points if they list off the character's stats even though it's not really helpful to know the specific numbers. Major bonus points if they let the tattle characters (Goombario, Goombella, Tippi/Tiptron, Kersti, Huey, and whoever it is in the next game) talk to each other in them. It's also the only way I'll accept Kersti's involvement in any capacity since her general rudeness could be pretty funny.

I can just see her opening up the Tattle on Corrin with "Is that another sword Lord?!?" and the next character responds with "Nhor Prince/Priestess, actually." lol

And the best part is, it's entirely text based so you wouldn't have to worry about not being able to do ones for DLC characters that were planned later in development...if there were any.

I've never played a Paper Mario game, but it looks good! I know many wants Paper Mario in Smash and I actually don't mind it.

I am not really into leaks community, but I want to point out that some months ago Sabi said a new Paper Mario and a new 2D Metroid game (maybe a Fusion sequel) were being developed. A sequel to Fusion would be amazing!

Seriously though remember how we were talking about how Nintendo should reveal everything at once? I didn't expect to hear Paper Mario news this morning and for it to just be dropped so casually. That's the kind of thing you'd save for a direct, no?

It seems like they did indeed bring back partners, although all of them have been pretty generic so far. I wish they could've at least added something small, like a chip in the Bob-omb's wind or a different colored fuse.

Still, appearance is only a fraction of what makes a good character. If the writing is on par with Color Splash, I think they could make some pretty quirky and memorable characters. We also haven't seen what they'll do in battle, so that's another thing to consider.

Yeah, especially since is seems to be a pretty high budget title.

To their credit, the games do at least look similar what with the papercraft aesthetic (which I personally kinda hate, but eh). How similar they play though remains to be seen. I guess we'll find out soon enough (not that that would confirm the other claim either though).

I don't know about Paper Mario as a DLC character being a lock, but I do think that we're now guaranteed to get some sort of Paper Mario content in the future as promotion for the new game, even if it's just a Spirit Event.

I think that they're unable to get a direct which is why they just dropped the trailer. Chances are that if they had everything ready for a direct, we'd get one, waiting until they have everything ready may be impossible as the game's planned for release in 2 months

There are turn based battles, and it seems like the jump and hammer abilities are separate from items, so it could still be good. More information is needed of course. Preferably in English.

Something I will say is that regardless of how Origami King turns out, I will be a bit more forgiving towards it given that Bug Fables coming out for Switch later this month and at least in some fashion I'll have the 64/TTYD esque RPG to satiate my tastes.

This manner in which this announced though has me wondering if if indeed we'll be getting a drip feed of Nintendo news via stuff like Twitter over the next month, likely leading to the ARMS confirmation/possible Fighter 7 reveal.

Low key I'd be pretty stoked to have him in. Not really expecting it because Paper Mario already has a stage and music tracks, but he was one of my old most-wanteds from before Sm4sh so finally having him in would make me happy. Bonus points if his moveset is based more on the older games with a little bit of Sticker Star/Color Splash influence thrown in just to throw them a bone.

I at least do think we’ll get an announced in advance Smash video presentation dedicated to Smash only. Not a “direct” per se, but like when Joker dropped for download.

I don't think it's impossible that they will stream it live. I remember that the Lucina/Robin trailer in Smash 4 was announced beforehand and livestreamed. It wasn't part of a Smash direct.

When Joker was officially available for download, it had his full trailer and explanation of new features like the stage builder. Only problem is it was shadowdropped. I think they could do a full “digest” video except not shadowdropped

and yes. I know there probably won’t be any new modes after home run. But who’s to say they can’t add to EXISTING modes?

No. If memory serves, ARMS's reveal is the third character to actually be purposely hinted at or teased at all (though Sakurai's binary counting was a pretty obtuse hint).

To be fair, you can't blame people for thinking this way. The past two characters have been (seemingly) promotional first-parties from relatively new games.

The pool of which characters can be included is exponentially largened by the second pass, I just find it funny that it took a trailer to make them remember that Paper Mario exists.

Honestly including the ARMS rep itself I'm expecting this Pass to have 2 or 3 1st part characters.

Those that has the best chances are an Gen 8 Pokemon, BotW2 character and Paper Mario. Honestly don't expect an Xenoblade rep since Nintendo is choosing the latter two would be chosen due to promotion and Pokemon, well being what it is doesn't need anything.
