The next possible new spirits event right now is a Xenoblade HD Spirit event. If that happens, wouldn't that take a toll on Rex's chances much like with the Pokemon Sword/Shield spirit event?
Depends on how the event is handled and also our ability to look at Rex's chances will become more clear after seeing how they handle Future Connected and whether or not XC2 plays any role in that additional content or not.

Maybe some free Assist Trophies would be pretty neat. It would be a great way to give representation to characters and franchises that won’t be getting in as fighters but allow them to participate in battles more directly then if they where just Spirits.
My wishes:
Final Fantasy VII: Aerith Gainsborough (hey, FFVII didn't get an AT in base while SF and Bayonetta did)
Standalone Bandai Namco AT: The Prince from Katamari Damacy
Persona 5: Futaba/Oracle in her spaceship or whatever
Dragon Quest: Jessica from VIII
Banjo & Kazooie: Gruntilda. Maybe even give her the Rathalos treatment and have her double as a boss
SNK: Geese "PREDICTABO" Howard. yes, PREDICTABO is his headcanon middle name i dont make the rules
FE3H: The Gatekeeper. Basically a less intimidating version of Mr. Resetti from Brawl

it'd probably just be Future Connected with FC!Shulk, FC!Melia and the two new Nopon whose names I already forget. It shouldn't affect Rex (or Elma, or even Mecha-Fiora)

I don't think it'll happen because Xenoblade Chronicles's main cast is already in the game as spirits. Even if it were to, I don't think it would disconfirm Rex since it's not his game that's being inspirited.

oh

remember the dummied out Rare spirits before Banjo was DLC

you think they'll make a spirit event out of that? (Jet Force Gemini + Blast Corps, MAYBE throwing in Conker too)
Don't forget Devil's Third.

In Soviet Russia, you don't get Spirits. Spirits get you.

I feel like if Dante got in, it would be because of his legacy as a character in the gaming world, not because he suddenly shot up to popularity after Fighter 5 rumors started circulating. If it was solely based on the latter, it would be too late to add him in this pass.

Devil's Third isn't Rare tho i don't think, but it could still have an event
It was in the same position. Nintendo owned a part of it in Japan, just the name, but don't own the IP.

The two Rareware spirits are IP names they own, but not the IP itself.

That's the analogy overall. I don't remember who owns Devil's Third, but it isn't Rare.

I doubt we're getting Xenoblade Spirits. Regardless of how much new content they add, it's still just a remake of a game that's already represented well in Smash.

Personally, I don't see any outcome that effects Rex's chances significantly. He's already a Spirit, he already has a Mii costume, and his game already has tracks in Smash. More Spirits is the best we're getting out of this new Xenoblade game, and I don't think there's much worse Sakurai could do to Rex.

Tbf, while Link's Awakening got spirits in base game already we did get some new ones themed about the remake.

So maybe the possibility of new Xenoblade spirits with the theme of the HD remake could still happen.

That creature literally destroyed me the first time I entered Gaur Plains, lol.

Could easily be a 4 stars Spirit battle.

Next spirit event throw us for a loop when its revealed to be a Persona 5 that adds Kasumi and Maruki from Royal, and Zenkichi and Sophie from Scramble.
That would be quite an interesting surprise.

Maybe I could see It happening near the release date of Persona 5 Strikers outside of Japan.

That might finally give us a Jack Frost spirit too.

That’s actually not TOO far off from my thoughts about if DLC Assist Trophies were possible:
Know what I would’ve liked to see? An Assist Trophy added to each current Challenger Pack in the Fighter’s Pass, even packs in Vol. 2 (as in one Assist Trophy per pack). Here are some DLC Assist Trophies I came up with:

-Jack Frost (SMT/Persona): Runs around shooting ice at enemies, sometimes clinging to upside down surfaces.

-Golem (Dragon Quest): Slowly walks around and chucks boulders at opponents.

-Mumbo Jumbo (Banjo-Kazooie): Casts a spell that randomly transforms the player*.

-Nakoruru (Samurai Shodown): Fights opponents with her dagger and her trusted bird friend, Mamahaha.

-Hanneman (Fire Emblem: Three Houses): Teleports around the stage and casts Sagittae. He takes less damage from projectile attacks and is immune to magic attacks, but is relatively weak to physical attacks.

*The transformations are as follows:

-Giant

-Tiny

-Invincible

-Bunny

-Metal

-Bullet Bill

-Super Leaf

-Superspicy Curry

-Gold

Or he can just turn you into a washing machine, leaving you completely helpless until the transformation wears off in ten seconds or an opponent tosses you off.

What’s anyone else’s idea for an Assist Trophy for each pack?
And hey, I like your idea of giving Grunty the Rathalos treatment.

If we got DLC assist trophies I would completely love an Alex Kidd one.

That or maybe even a Mii costume of him.

Really liked two of his games (Miracle World and Enchanted Castle).

Alrighty. After a whole week or so of procrastinating, I finally finished making my first challenger pack.
This pack is for a character I think would be pretty unique visually and also be rather fun to play as, but their time has most likely passed at this point.
Coulrophobics & Xenophobics look away, for I present to you:

Oh! I would really love a stage based on all the Ultra Spaces!!! They had really cool designs and could make for fin gimmicks with the Ultra Beasts.

I like your Spirit selection, music choices and Classic Mode route too!

The Mii Costume selection is quite interesting, and I do wonder if you would give any of the costumes a song!

Going back to the ballot things, I think it's pretty clear that the ballot isn't influencing the DLC much. In the case of Joker, Byleth and the ARMS character, they're games came out after the 2015 ballot. For Terry, he was never popular (which is evidence by everyone asking "who" on Nintendo's Twitter). The only characters that might have been chosen because of the Ballot were Hero and Banjo. That said, Hero was clearly added to push Dragon Quest 11 as even his crossover thing mention DQ11, not the Dragon Quest series.

I think it's clear based on who has been added the ballot means little to nothing as far as DLC goes. It definitely influenced the base game but hasn't had the same outcome on the DLC we've gotten.

Putting a spirit doesn't mean he's still interested in the character, at least for me.
When I say "being interested", I'm referring to the desire of making Geno a playable character.

Assuming Sakurai no longer cares about Geno to make him playable, that doesn't mean he will neglect his fans. He knows that there are a lot of Geno fans in the community and putting him or not as a spirit isn't really tied to Sakura's interest in the character. Even if he never considered him to be a playable character for Ultimate, I don't see why he wouldn't ask to include Geno as a spirit, when he was already talking with Square for Cloud/Hero.

I mean, I bet he would have added his Mii Costume in base game if he could, that wasn't the case so I guess Square wants to sell it eventually.
Seems more likely Sakurai wanted to gauge if Mii upgraded costumes were successful and well received.
And they are a wild, hands down hit.
I think we should brace ourselves for Geno as a Mii costume upgrade. Fits like a glove. Or an arm cannon.

Kinda unlikely but I would really like an Alex Kidd Deluxe Mii costume.

Ignoring High Tech World and Shinobi World (both being reskins of other games to make matters worse), Alex Kidd for the most part just punches, kicks in the air and uses rock, Paper, scissors in all of his main games. Even with his vehicles he could be kinda strange to add as a fighter at the moment as much as I would love that.

Because of that, I feel him being an assist trophy as in the Project X Zone titles or a Deluxe Mii costume with the remix of the Miracle World thing would be quite acceptable from my part.

He's an assist (alongside pretty much every video game character ever) in Card Sagas Wars. He plays Roshambo with your opponent; loser gets a heavy object dropped on their head.

Lol, basically similar to how when he loses to Roshambo in Enchanted Castle he gets thrown a heavyweight on him cartoon-style.

I really like It when assists in videogames go for references like those.

I'm tired of people saying Nintendo fans didn't like or know Terry, you don't get an entore crowd chanting your name if people don't like you. People go "Oh but Nintendo New York always cheers!" Only to go "Haha look they weren't happy with Byleth" as proof Byleth is objectively bad

When It comes to my personal experience with SNK, I did know the company existed before Smash since I saw news reports about them releasing Neo Geo ports on the Switch quite frequently and reading people on some spanish forums talking about how they were hyped for KoF XIV back then. Not to mention some fan animations I saw on Metal Slug.

Seeing SNK getting representation in Smash was honestly a thing I should have considered 90% likely since then, due to the impact of SNK in the industry (by being the first company which invested on bringing the real arcade experience home, the fact they worked on the Nintendo arcade ports for Switch and their recent interest on gaining more popularity and sales with their new reopening), yet somehow slept on too much.

And when It comes to the Nintendo New York Store people, I feel most people who react there are really big Nintendo or gaming fans with a neat amount of money (or at least who live near). What would a Nintendo fan like more for a setting on where to watch the new Nintendo Direct other than an official Nintendo Store building? I could see that idea tracking the attention of many fans.

Something to keep in mind about Fighter's Pass 1 is that apparently it was in the negotiations phase by E3 2018. This is probably why it had so little basis in addressing fan demand, they likely just assumed people would be happy to see their favorite characters as spirits and assist trophies. For direct contrast, Smash 4's DLC wasn't a planned thing until it happened, which meant the first thing they did was address one of the games' biggest criticisms, "WHERE THE **** IS MEWTWO!?", even though Mewtwo was already a trophy. And even then, for a while Mewtwo was the only character planned for DLC. With that in mind, it's worth thinking about that Fighter's Pass Volume 2 is gonna be their first opportunity to address a lot of roster-related criticisms in the vein of "This character should've been playable instead of a spirit/AT/whatever!" And while the ARMS character may not be one that was spirited/AT'd, it speaks volumes that they're going back to a series that was relegated to a side role in the base game.

Wait, iirc the deal with Mewtwo was that he was planned to be base game but had to be delayed into DLC due to time constraints.

I wouldn't mind more Sega characters being mii costumes. Alex Kidd, Nights, Amigo, AiAi, Beat, Ulala, Arle and Kiryu if they don't get in. I don't think characters like AiAi or Nights have much chance compared to others anyways so a mii costume would be cool, that or a Assist trophy but I doubt we are gonna get extras and the next smash game might take a while anyways.

It would be pretty interesting if about half of the DLC characters are characters that fans rose a stink about when the base game was revealed (or were at least characters that would have been selected if timing or resources wasn't a restriction). I think for this scenario the candidates are Rex & Pyra/Mythra, Waluigi, Geno, Isaac, Skull Kid, and Shadow, though those last two aren't quite in this category, and I'm probably missing someone who is. If that were the case, which characters do you think they'd pick?

I do think it helps the Spirits, but there’s also tons of characters that aren’t in the game already that have had lots of fan demand over the past couple years. Sora, Doom Slayer, Crash, Dante, Phoenix Wright, Steve, Master etc...

I’d say Rex, Rayman & maaaaybe Shantae are possibilities to get “upgraded”. I really don’t think we’ll see an AT get upgraded. I think Sakurai will still feel that those characters being involved with the gameplay even as assists is good enough. He had to know that Waluigi, Isaac & Shovel Knight were popular fan picks, but he still didn’t make them playable. I don’t think anything’s changed there especially since we’ve seen a lot of characters rise in demand recently.

I also think there’s a high chance that we’ll see atleast one “out there” pick that no one sees coming like Joker & Terry. Probably two.

If I'm gonna be honest, I'm not sure if they might see Assists the same way they did before the launch of the game. I go back to that one post in the isaac discord that mentioned Nintendo Being surprised at the backlash over his AT. Now of course it wasn't from Nintendo officially, but from a Insider, but i think the Backlash of Assists might be seen this time. I can't remember Assists getting so much Vitrol back in Brawl or Smash 4

If there Mindsets change on Assist, I might See Assists as even more likely than Spirits. Assists already have models to use as a base for animating certain characters and such. the thing is Aside from Isaac, Shovel Knight, and Bomberman, the rest of the popular Assists like Waluigi, Shadow, Skull Kid, etc are from already represented Franchises. We do have Byleth, but because of how Fire Emblem are different games in terms of World, it might be Different Situation. If there are Bonus Fighters though, Then I think Assist Fighters like Shadow and Waluigi are a thing

Also for Out there Picks, I'm thinking someone like Professor Layton, League of Legends (because people probably forgot about the "leak"), Reimu, Isaac, Maybe KOS-MOS. I think the more surprising things will be the Popular Speculated characters that get regulated to mii costumes
