I’m working on a essay about Kiryu from Yakuza for Smash but I found a fun fact while researching.

Ichiban, the protagonist of Yakuza 7, is canonically a huge fan of Dragon Quest. Due to harsh environment he had growing up, he often retreated to playing DQ games as a form of escape from his hardships. His sense of morality is shaped around trying to emulate the Heroes in those games and he thinks he’s some sort of chosen one.

Ichiban would never get in over Kiryu, but I think it would be funny if these series could cross over again in Smash.
Oh my god I want this now.

It's so pure and wholesome.

Don't know which game I would say had my favorite pool of new characters overall. In Melee I didn't know what the hell a Marth, Ness or an Ice Climber was But Mario and Samus were in the same game so it was dope. Brawl had Diddy, Snake, Ike and Sonic. Smash 4 had Mega Man, Mac, Ryu, Rosalina and even Cloud. Ultimate had Ridley, Dark Samus, Simon and Terry. Just to name a few from each.

And SEGA only has Sonic

If you were a SEGA fan you'd understand that all the key beloved SEGA franchises other than Virtua Fighter are missing from Smash for some reason.

Oh I guess After Burner has a small refrence in Bayonetta moveset
You can add me to the list of people who'd want Streets of Rage content. Axel or Blaze would be fine, and not too many 2D beat'em up characters are in Smash as it is.

Though if we don't get Hayabusa, Joe Musashi would be pretty cool too.

I still feel as if he and/or Dixie Kong should have gotten PP's role as the 'bonus' DLC character, honestly.
Yup, especially after the wave of deconfirmations we just got in that direct, I feel like both of those characters would have been far better at softening the blow short term due to their fan requested status and would have complemented the roster much better in the long term.

Is Puyo Puyo the closet thing we'll get to a tetris rep without it being an actual f'n block

Say remember how a while back I made an fun game for if Sakurai were to make an Echo Pack consisting of 4 characters and who you'd choose to round out to 90 (92) playable characters.

What if we do get Echoes and 4 out of the 6 fighters comes with an Echo of their own? Probably not likely to happen but just something to think about.

Using my current predictions.

76: Crash Bandicoot - Coco Bandicoot
77: Travis Touchdown - Henry Cooldown
78: Heihachi
79: Ring Fit Adventurer
80: 2B - A2 or 9S
81: Phoenix Wright - Apollo Justice or Miles Edgeworth
Heihachi could get Kazuya and/or Jin as an echo. At least if said family members had the effort put into them like Ken got from being Ryu's echo.

Or they could make echoes/clones of other characters if need be. Protoman/Bass/Roll for Mega Man. Rock for Terry, Medusa for Palutena. Bull**** like that.

How about we use all four Echoes on one character and get SMTV protag with SMT1, 2, If and IV protagonists as echoes

Then we'll have enough SMT characters for a true SMT x FE experience
That's what I've been saying for so long. "Yo, what if Hero except cyberpunk, and also, ambiguously satanic."

We posting Yakuza memes now!?

Honestly I don't get the "hate" for Smash 4 newcomers. They manage to put one of the most wanted character after Sonic announcement: Mega man, and one of the most iconic video game character of all time: Pac-Man. Smash 4 introduce also 2 very big franchise in Smash: Animal crossing and Wii fit (I know a lot of people think Wii fit is a stupid character, but objectively it's a huge character). Also Duck hunt is imo the best retro rep we ever got, Duck hunt is way more popular than Ice climber or than Gyrmoite/Stack-up. Shulk was relatively obscure, but he still represent one of the best Wii game for many fans and critics.
The people who hate Smash 4's newcomers are just salty fanboys who would rather have Smash just have reps from their favorite Nintendo franchises then all of Nintendo.

I've been interested on giving the Yakuza series a try recently.

Many people at Discord seriously suggest me to start with Yakuza Zero.

Yeah, that game is the first canonical one and shows the backstories of Kiryu and best boy Majima.

Also has the best soundtrack in the series and I want it in smash.

So I see we're talking Yakuza now. The fact that most of the Yakuza sidequests involve Kiryu getting involved with something incredibly stupid and ridiculous while playing things 100% straight is part of the reason why he'd fit into Smash so ****ing well. Sure in the surface he looks like a super serious Yakuza man who has no business being around these cutesy cartoon characters, but we're also talking about a man who fought a group of diaper-wearing adults and decided to make a chicken that he won from a bowling competition a real-estate manager. Dude gets put in so many weird situations that he'd fit right in with the wacky antics of Smash. Plus the influx of wholesome fanart of Kiryu being Kirby's dad and Nugget taking over as the mayor while Isabelle and Villager are in Smash alone would be worth it.

Smash 4 honestly had my favorite pool of newcomers. Megaman, Cloud, and Bayonetta are still some of my most hype inclusions to ever happen in Smash, and I still liked the inclusions of Rosalina, Palutena, Shulk, Lucina, or even Pac-Man (not that big of a fan of Pacman, but still, it's ****ing Pacman!) moreso than most inclusions in Ultimate. Brawl's was pretty good too, bringing in more obvious picks that felt missing and pleasantly surprising me with Ike, but Smash 4 just had, well, more characters that excited me.

Kazuma Kiryu, the man who:
-Helped a dominatrix perfect her routine in public
-Bought a foreign woman a pizza because he misunderstood her saying she need a visa
-Recorded voice lines for a yaoi game with complete stoic seriousness
-Treated racing miniature cars as the most serious thing in the world, even after being in jail for 10 years
-Wore a mascot costume with a giant orange for a head and treated it completely seriously, even beating up a group of thugs while still wearing it
-Posed like a stereotypical anime maid for a photoshoot
-Decided to respond to a computer virus by beating up the computer

Kiryu in smash would be amazing for me. I've only played Kiwami, but that was enough to win me over. Aside from the extra gameplay stuff everyone else already mentioned, I had a lot of fun with the combat and heat actions never get boring for me.

I feel Kazuma Kiryu is perfect spirit event fodder. I don't think he is too likely and i really doubt Sega is getting another entry in smash.
Kunio was my preferred Japanese thug, but since he's basically deconfirmed, Kiryu is next in line.

How about we use all four Echoes on one character and get SMTV protag with SMT1, 2, If and IV protagonists as echoes
Better yet, upgrade all the Hero alts to Echoes and give all 4 off them a different fixed Down B menu and get rid of the random spells.

Ichiban would never get in over Kiryu, but I think it would be funny if these series could cross over again in Smash.
Spirit battle where Ichiban is represented by Hero.

The Yakuza games are the games I would want to make if I made games.

In a word, irreverent. The Yakuza games tell us not to be ashamed of the absurdity of life, but to embrace it.

Is this a real person or a fictional character?

You know, considering how wacky the Yakuza series is, Kazuma Kiryu would be a perfect fit in the roster, which already consists of an old NES peripheral, a fitness trainer, a hunting dog and a duck, a heckin' good secretary, and a potted plant.

I’m gonna talk about Kiryu now
98681408-F1F3-4EB1-882B-75771035EBF1.jpeg
The Yakuza series, also known as Like A Dragon(Ryu ga Gotoku) in Japan, is an open world beat em’ up crime drama made by SEGA. The Yakuza series is one of SEGA’s flagship titles, raking in 12 million sales since the series debut in 2005. Additionally it has had 8 mainline games, multiple remakes of earlier titles, multiple spin-off series, crossovers, a movie, a radio drama, a stage play, and other various merchandise.

While always a strong contender in the east, the Yakuza series has found popularity in west recently with the release of Yakuza 0, a prequel that acted as a new entrance point for many new players. Now the western sales of the series meet the same popularity it has in Japan, so the series is increasingly more well known worldwide.

Yakuza games primarily protagonist is Kazuma Kiryu, known as the legendary “Dragon of Dojima” in the criminal underworld of Japan. Despite his fearsome reputation and his unmatched skill in martial arts, Kiryu follows a strict code of honor and is often only pulled back into the criminal world in order to protect those he cares about.

Much like the Metal Gear series, the Yakuza series touches on mature and series themes, but also enjoys a plethora of humorous and over the top antics. These can be found mostly in the side mission and mini games, which can range anywhere from filming a music video, singing karaoke, hiring an actual chicken as a manager, going to the arcade to play video games, getting harassed by your stalker rival every 5 seconds, playing dress up, going to a disco, or even just answering the phone. A lot of the humor lies in how stoic Kiryu takes every single situation seriously, despite how crazy it can get. Kiryu would be right at home with the wacky nature of Smash.

Even the combat of the game has an element of brutal but humorous slapstick to it. Taking a lot inspiration from martial arts movies, Kiryu will finish off opponents in over the top and unorthodox ways, dishing out brutal beat downs and often using improvised weapons. Such as smashing people over the head with a bicycle.

CF7618B9-90FB-4FD4-8C32-3ABD3E8604C0.gif

While the finishers can be humorous, Yakuza doesn’t stray away from being serious when it needs to be, such as with the boss battles which can be real hype especially with the series top notch music.
- - - -

Anyway I’ve been giving a rundown of the series, what about Kiryu in Smash? What could he do and is he likely?

Kiryu already has more than enough moves he could use when adapted into Smash Bros. Potential unique gameplay mechanics for Kiryu is that he could switch between fighting styles that change up some of his moves and attributes like they does in some of his games. Such as the balanced Brawler style, the quick attack but weak grabbing Rush style, and the super armored b heat meter is a gauge that increases based on how much damage Kiryu does and depletes if he takes damage, getting enough meter might him to use a powerful heat action attacks. Lastly a lot of Yakuza combat revolves around you picking up common items and using them as improvised weapons, so having some sort of mechanics revolving around items would be very fitting. Either being able to summon his own items like Peach or Diddy Kong, or maybe having Increased power when using melee items in a certain fighting style. Either way one of his Smash attacks needs to be a bicycle smash.

I feel that Kiryu has a pretty similar situation as Joker did. (Pictured here Joker stealing Kiryu’s look)
77EA6FA3-2CAF-4A40-A91F-85CA6DE11F73.jpeg

He’s a popular SEGA owned series more associated with Sony but still has appearances on Nintendo consoles that recently got big in the west while having a Japanese focused setting and a protagonist that is a criminal with a heart of gold. I’d say Kiryu has the added benefit of also being reoccurring and a legacy. If Nintendo doesn’t mind going to SEGA again for this pass, I see Kiryu having a decent chance. At the very least I think he should be considered more seriously throughout the speculation community.

I’m predicting there’s gonna be 4 or 3 Japanese gaming reps (not including a Nintendo Franchise) Sakurai said he wants Smash to be a museum for Japanese gaming. I think some of the Japanese devs down below will have a rep in Smash.

Level 5 (Yo-Kai Watch, Professor Layton or Ni-no Kuni rep)
Capcom (Dante or Phoenix Wright)
Keoi Tecmo (Ryu Hyabusa)
Square Enix (Sora, Geno or Lara Croft)
Nihon Falcom (Adol or Trails Rep)
Bandai Namco (Tales of or Tekken rep)
ArcSystems (Guilty Gear)
Sega (Arle Nadja or Kazuma Kiryu)
Nippon Ichi (Disgaea Rep)
Platinum Games (2B)

I also think there’s going to be 1 Nintendo Rep (probably Pokémon)
Im predicting 1 or 2 western reps, it might be one of the companies down below.

Activision (Crash or Spyro)
Blizzard (Overwatch)
Microsoft (Steve or Master Chief)
Ubisoft (Rayman maybe)

I don’t think an Indie reps likely seeing as many indies have either been Assist Trophies or Mii costumes but who knows. I’d love if Shantae got in.

These are just predictions of the the most likely companies (in my opinion) to have a rep in FP 2. I also did a general outline of characters that could get in from those companies.

Im honestly confident with at least 1 or 2 of those companies I’ve listed above getting a rep.

Do not forget:
- Playing a parody game of MushiKing based on womens' wrestling
- Working at a cat cafe
- Managing a cabaret club and providing emotional support to at least a dozen different hostesses
- Directing the "Thriller" music video with Michael Jackson and Stephen Spielberg
- Owning a real estate company worth more than some countries' overall GDP, 90% of its success being based around beating up media moguls
- Being an Initial D taxi driver, complete with its own eurobeat soundtrack
- Inventing a luchador personality for the kids at the orphanage he manages
- Becoming a gravure idol photographer
- Buying 10 year old boys porn magazines
- Fighting bears in an underground colloseum

And of course:
- Being the best daddy in all of Japan, taking his adoptive daughter to gambling halls and shady back alleys while fulfilling her never-ending stream of unreasonable requests to get that damned 100% completion trophy... Stop it Haruka, no more Gundam arcade games or Chinese gambling.... No, you don't need that bullet proof vest or 950 points in karaoke...

Good to see that discussion has now turned to Yakuza, more people need to start seriously considering it for Smash, and a few are even considering getting into it! That's great!

Anecdotally, I'm honestly surprised that there's people here that haven't heard about Parasite. But I guess there isn't much overlap between gamers and cinephiles.

I love how Ness is in so many of these.
So basically if your tastes weren't super specific refusing to play different kinds of games you'd be happy, got it
C'mon now, how is not playing just three games having super specific tastes?

With all the Yakuza stuff flying around, I;d say that the series working in the game would be quite interesting. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it kinda like GTA in terms of gameplay? I'm just too lazy to do research or I'm just too busy with schoolwork.

Eh, not quite. No driving or shooting, it's more of a brawler. It does have open world elements and tons of minigames, but aside from that, the crime theme, and the irreverent tone, it has little in common with GTA

It shares the setting of a crime world, the sandbox approach and trying to be a good ingame representation of a real life area, but fundamentally it is more of an oldschool brawler (or traditional JRPG in case of 7) than a racing game/shooter. It's more of a spiritual successor to Shenmue in a sense, with focus on martial arts, well-developed minigames and more grounded narrative (though that is very debatable for some titles lmao).

The "problem" with Smash 4's first party lineup is that they decided to focus more on newer popular characters, and the Smash fandom seems to hate any character that they didn't grow up with.

It can basically be summed up as

The irony of the matter is that I heard complaints of the Ultimate newcomer roster catering to older people back then after the August Smash Direct. This is despite the inclusion of :ultinkling::ultchrom::ultdarksamus:, none of which were from the 80’s or 90’s.

I see. While I'm a big fan of open world games, traditional brawlers...aren't my cup of tea. But hey, judging from you guys' discussions all about it, I'll invest in it...should it get into the Smash roster.

Not at all, if the games are beat'm ups with JRPG elements. Hell Yakuza 7 is a straight up turn base JRPG. Just about every game in the series takes place a small neighborhood or district without any need to drive, but loads to do like sidequests, mini games such as Bowling, Batting Cages, Karaoke, old school Sega arcade games at Arcades. Here's some gameplay from one of my favorite boss fights in the whole series, to get an idea of how the games play.

It's SEGA's second most successful IP right now and on the rise thanks to the excellent Yakuza 0 being a breakout hit in the West. However, Yakuza's steps onto Nintendo platforms weren't that great since they only tried it with Yakuza 1 and 2. And not the great remakes who added lots of content, but remasters of the janky PS2 games.... on the Wii U. Needless to say it didn't sell well. Personally I think Smash would be an ideal marketing vehicle for the series and would likely drive a lot of sales on Switch should they port 0, Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2 - the remasters of 3-5 as well as 6 and 7 may be PS4 only for a little while longer still.

Then again, people also want Kiryu or Majima in Tekken 7 for a while now and that hasn't happened either. Afaik Yakuza isn't a series that crosses over with other IPs easily since its narrative leans on a more realistic side, to the point where the games actually play around the same time ingame as their release in the real world - meaning characters in the game age along with the players and the releases (which is a really cool little touch btw, more series should try that).

Most importantly to me though, Yakuza has amazing music. Not only do we have the excellent karaoke songs, but also an insane amount of tracks in each games' OST for every occasion. Every boss, most encounters, most styles/moves use have their own theme, not to mention silly 5 second ingame loops for one off minigames, story theme songs, etc. get their own track as well. Add to that the fact that most of the characters in the franchise are not only modelled, but voiced by famous Japanese (voice) actors and you have a franchise whose audio is way above its peers compared to the budget range they operate in.
Seriously, we need some SNK 2.0 treatment to do this series audio justice:
