Samus IMO needs her fire blast attacks replaced with ice blasts (like how D Samus has electricity blasts) and neutral b changed to a beam like Thoron. Other than that she's set imo.
Ganondorf is a bit weird cause he's honestly the best he's ever been with his sword now. Maybe change his recovery to his silly float he had in OoT, and give him a cape reflector? I know people like the idea of him having his dead man's volley energy ball from OoT, but on the other hand Ganondorf with a projectile sounds terrifying.
Personally, I think Samus would be more true to form if her neutrals were more like Mega Man's. By which I mean, use energy blasts instead of punching and kicking, not unlike she does in her older games. Maybe then put missiles as neutral B and side B as a way to change the beam's effect? Some games have you choose between beams, while others have a stacking effect.

And yeah, Ganondorf with a huge, chargeable projectile sounds terrifying... but he could also draw from TP, ALTTP, WW and other games. I mean, Zelda and Link draw from multiple incarnations despite being "specific" ones. I think that would be kinda cool, honestly.

I do think it's a bit of a waste for him to only use the sword on his smash attacks though... but people would not take too kindly to him being a swordfighter, I take it. Even though he could be a unique heavyweight one.

Speaking of Megaman. I would have loved they replaced his Fsmash with something else. (One of the removed specials from Smash4, Burst Bubble?) so that when you hold A, he charges his buster cannon like in the games.

But I’ve grown to accept how he is. He’s still really cool.
Although me being such a nitpicker, would have also loved to see charge slide for down A instead of regular slide, cause... well, regular slide doesn’t deal damage in canon.

Honestly, more than a Square or Microsoft character, I'm more curious about the other picks. People have said before that we might see characters that appeal to different audiences in the DLC... so what would even be on the other packs?

I think different genres is a good way to start. It's why I think Heihachi might be more likely than Lloyd or the other Namco characters, as we already have one RPG character (possibly two, if Erdrick is confirmed). Last time we got :ultryu: (2D fighting game), :ultcloud: (turn-based JRPG) and :ultbayonetta: (action, hack-and-slash) as our third parties. We might be looking at something similar here if Nintendo is really looking to "branch out" with DLC. Some already discussed ideas would be:

Platformer: Banjo, Crash, Spyro
Fighting: Heihachi, SC rep, most SNK suggested characters
Sandbox/Survival: Steve
Adventure/Visual Novel: Phoenix Wright, Professor Layton
Puzzle: Arle (or any Puyo Puyo rep)
Horror: Any RE characters

Any other ideas for genres?

TPS: Doomguy or MC
Western RPG: Dovahkin
Stealth/RPG: Adam Jensen/JC Denton
For Horror: Also Silent Hill
Action Platformer: Arthur from Ghosts and Goblins
RPG: Dark Souls
Platformer/TPS: Lara Croft
Shoot em up/Bullet Hell: Reimu is the biggest one I think

People seriously sleep on Arthur as a pick, I think. While some other Capcom characters are more likely, I can see him being a fun retro character... even though some people would hate him for the projectile spam.

I've played very little of the first Silent Hill. I don't know how well it could be translated. It's a very different horror game (for its time, at least) down to a conceptual level, being more slow-ish paced and way more moody and psychological. That said, I've been wrong in major ways about "characters/games that don't translate well" before, so maybe it could lead to an interesting playstyle that no other character has? Dunno.

I still highly doubt western games will be a priority over popular Japanese games. No doubt shoot em up/bullet hell rep is Reimu Hakurei.

I don’t expect any Mortal Kombat characters being playable anytime soon. I won’t be surprised if we get another Street Fighter, probably Ken or Chun-Li. Samurai Shodown is a possibility since it’s getting release this year on the Switch.

Ace attorney definitely has a high chance, I still think Fate is still very likely due their popularity in Japan.

That is definitely possible and very likely. However I think Chun-Li has equal chance as well though hard to imagine her move set
Err, he was correcting you.
You said you see Ken as another possible SF character, but... Ken's already in the game.

The fandom sleeps on a lot of characters, I feel that everytime I make lists I forget about many characters still.

Never played any of the Fate Games games, only watched the anime adaptations, but yes, they're huge. Especially with the addition of the new mobile games. Just like with Fire Emblem, this kinda thing inflates fanbases to a whole 'nother level.

I wouldn't expect MK either, if only because MK11 didn't get a console release in Japan. Though I think a character from another fighting game that isn't Street Fighter would be more likely imo. There's plenty of options too: Tekken, Soul Calibur, KOF, Samurai Shodown... the list goes on.

Please keep Resident Evil out of Smash. Real talk, RE really has no place in Smash, inherently. I seen the suggestion mentioned and many of them flew over my shoulders. RE is more of a forced option and I even seem to struggle if I want to take the idea into seriousness.

Why? We already have Fatal Frame content and multiple playable M-rated franchise fighters. A Resident Evil character wouldn't be out of place.

I mean... while it wouldn't be the Capcom character I'd like to see (that honor goes to our lawyer boy), I can understand why Nintendo could do it. With Dante deconfirmed, then the only series Capcom has pushed recently enough (not counting Mega Man and SF, of course) are Ace Attorney, Monster Hunter and... Resident Evil. They could go for a "sleeper pick" like Arthur or Amaterasu, but since this is DLC (and since this is Capcom), I think they would go with a character from their highest-grossing "current" titles.

RE isn't my favorite FPS option(but a great one), as Halo is my top dog. Though Fulgore is my main Microsoft pick.

Anyway, I don't think it's a good idea to try and just get all the popular Japanese IP's in first. There's going to be some more popular Western IP's at time too. If those would get more sales, it's the better option in that particular regard. Of course, what is easier to get is important too. Same with what has better moveset options.

It's the same reason I think it's fine to go for 3rd parties before some 1st parties. Some Nintendo All-Stars aren't playable yet, but that's okay. The game is now more than just Nintendo characters, so there's a lot more options to go with. Besides that, sales matter too. If you want to bring in more players overall, appealing solely to the Nintendo crowd isn't a strong way to do so. That gets the veterans back, but a far smaller playerbase than if you had content that is known for other systems as is. This invites way more players as well as helps to remove a console war stigma. Sure, at one point, the game series wasn't about being a major "ultimate game character game", but now it is. It's hard to do that if you ignore tons of potential IP's, just because they're not from the East or are not-Nintendo as is.

RE isn't even an FPS most of the time. As far as I know that's strictly RE7 and its DLCs.

More often it's Over-the-shoulder 3rd person or old-school fixed camera angles.

Honestly, I remembered it more as an FPS, but I played little of the games.

Welp.

Moreso my shooting character choice is da Chief. But fair point. Jill Valentine is still my favorite, though. Favorite character card in the card game as well.

But they don't necessarily need to. I think RE would be more of a "money grabber" pick than reasonable and honestly, Capcom is already fully represented with Street Fighter and Mega Man.

No mention of Dark Souls with Artorias?

Surely this is the work of the Abyss.

Yes, but they still can do.

That's a good thing, DLC's purpose is making money.

Capcom is already fully represented with Street Fighter and Mega Man.
Okay, but Resident Evil would be added for its own merits, not because it's owned by Capcom.

Artorias is not necessarily the only choice for Dark Souls

If it makes sense to Nintendo and they choose it, it is a reasonable pick

If you believe Capcom is well represented by MegaMan and Ryu? That's fair. Like, that's subjective and all, and there is nothing wrong with that mindset. Every player has an ideal theory of how the game should be. It obviously won't mean it matches up with Smash's official style or anything. But why should opinions match up with it? Kind of silly.

But RE wouldn't be an advertisement pick any more than Cloud was. There were two that got added due to advertising(it's arguable that Bayonetta could be this too, but we have no real details on her inclusion, and there's some evidence to suggest she was already in the games before the ballot started), being Roy and Corrin, and it wasn't the whole reason. It's silly to accuse series of being money-grabbers as if that's the sole reason they'd be in. It's more like 3rd parties are very popular and would do a lot to help the series attract more players. But the fact they're notable characters still plays a role as is.

No, I don't think you really get it. Capcom is literally represented with Street Fighter and Mega Man in Smash. Cloud, at least hasn't been in a crossover. At least not that I know of since those are so damn popular. Ryu gets a pass because he managed to become the face of the company. Mega Man always belonged in Smash at least due to the inherence he has for it.

RE has been established apart with MVC, leave them there. Smash is in no way destined to be some playground for "Everyone" and I really pray Sakurai fulfills this **

What I find interesting abou this is that, at the end of the day, all three third parties fromSmash 4 DLC were "money-grabbers", but in different ways, because they catered to specific people. Ryu is both a retro and current pick, in a way, represents 2D fighters, or "traditional" fighting games - something no other fighter did at the time. Cloud was kind of a retro pick, being from an older FF game, but also representing one of the biggest RPG franchises of all time. And Bayo came from a currently-relevant third party game that has strong ties with Nintendo.

I think a DLC character fulfills its purpose by selling well, because then you know it went well with the public. Conversely, when planning it, you would like characters that are popular among the public, or in this case, among different demographics.

An example lineup for the Fighter Pass (for argument's sake):

- Joker: Currently relevant character from a relatively big RPG franchise, appeals to both east and west.
- Erdrick: Somewhat "retro" RPG character from one of the biggest RPG franchises of all time (much like Cloud), could boost franchise in the West.
- Heihachi: Relevant especially in competitive communities, represents an entire subgenre of fighting games (like Ryu)
- Phoenix Wright: Represents a whole new genre (and playerbase) in smash, currently relevant, is very popular in both East and West.
- Banjo/Steve: The first would appeal to retro Smash fans, as his support playerbase possibly numbers in the thousands. The latter appeals to a newer, more casual audience, also numbering in the thousands.

Why does it matter Cloud wasn't in a crossover before? At all? This seems way too pedantic and pointless. Smash isn't based upon some ridiculous idea that it cares about whether some characters have crossed over or not.

I don't get it because it's completely illegal. MvC has absolutely nothing to o with Smash in any way. This will not in any remote way prevent RE content from getting in. It's a non-factor, realistically. Just like Snake being in a crossover with tons of other characters in a fighting game had no effect on him being in Smash(twice in Smash, no less), this is completely irrelevant.

...Street Fighter and MegaMan were in MvC before being in Smash. RE was in the same position, in another crossover first. Yeahhhh, now thinking about it, none of this makes any remote sense.

Exactly. They're unique situations. Money-grabbers may not be the best term, but attention-grabbers is. Either way, they're not inherently advertisement picks, but excellent choices because they diversify the fanbase and the gameplay itself. Nothing more needs to be done.

I'd argue RE4 (and by extension Leon) has cemented itself in gaming history enough to deserve a spot in Smash.

Minecraft has 74 million players that log in monthly. So, while Banjo would please thousands in the Smash bubble, Steve would please millions upon millions of people.

But no one is talking about Dark Souls on their lists to begin with.
I did in mine lol
TPS: Doomguy or MC
Western RPG: Dovahkin
Stealth/RPG: Adam Jensen/JC Denton
For Horror: Also Silent Hill
Action Platformer: Arthur from Ghosts and Goblins
RPG: Dark Souls
Platformer/TPS: Lara Croft
Shoot em up/Bullet Hell: Reimu is the biggest one I think
If I didnt classify it correctly I apologize.

You're exaggerating how obscure Banjo is just to spite the "Smash bubble". Of course BK isn't as popular, but MS uses Banjo in marketing for Xbox Game Pass among their other IPs.

Honestly, I just view the Smash 4 dlc characters as fan picks, barring Corrin and maybe Ryu. Mewtwo and Roy were heavily requested Melee vets that fans were begging to return for years. Lucas is in the same boat but with a bit less demand imo. Sakurai outright stated in an interview with Nomura that Cloud was added due to both fan demand and representing Final Fantasy. Bayonetta's entire pitch was that she was the "winner" of the Smash Ballot and that the fans voted her into the game. Ryu's reasoning for inclusion could've been to represent Street Fighter, Capcom's largest franchise (don't quote me on that lol I have a sneaking suspicion Megaman might be bigger.) Corrin is the only odd one out but apparently, Sakurai and the devs just thought they were a cool character with an interesting gimmick.

I think more people will be disappointed if Steve gets a spot before other characters from series that have way more history in gaming. Steve isn’t that big of an icon in gaming compared to characters that have been around for years

He is an icon, but contrary to some people on here's beliefs, he isn't necessary for Smash DLC to make millions and millions of dollars.

Steve has longevity and is from an iconic game. I'd argue his iconicness as a character (he's the default skin that people are quick to dump and replace, people don't play Minecraft for Steve, and he's nothing more than an avatar that people reskin from jump often), but Minecraft itself is iconic. I'm not a fan of Steve either, and I'd be quite downtrodden if we got Steve and not Banjo for a Microsoft rep, but there is really no good argument against Steve in Smash. Minecraft is iconic with a legacy, and there are genuine fans of Steve out there. He also has move set potential.

I see Banjo and Steve a situation where the fanbase undersells Steve achievements and oversells Banjo achievements. Both have merits, but neither are guaranteed.

No character is really necessary to sell well really. But is silly to downplay the success and recognizability of Minecraft.

He actually is. Minecraft revolutionized Sandbox gaming in the same way Pac-Man revolutionized Arcade Gaming, Halo as well as Doom revolutionized FPS', Mario and Sonic separately revolutionizing Platforming in their own way.

He's up there with those guys to a major degree. It's more that people don't care about the character. Doesn't make him less of a huge gaming icon. It just came later on compared to some other franchises. That's more of a nostalgia argument than what is actually more iconic. Some don't like he's an avatar and easily replaceable skin-wise. Some prefer other Microsoft characters. But anyone saying he isn't a huge gaming icon needs to do a lot more research. It's objectively false. He's one of the most known characters in gaming history, among the top dogs by farrrrr.

You're exaggerating how obscure Banjo is just to spite the "Smash bubble". Of course BK isn't as popular, but MS uses Banjo in marketing for Xbox Game Pass among their other IPs.
It's not an exaggeration. Banjo is nowhere near as known as Steve is. There's a huuuuuuuge difference in sales. Minecraft is the second best selling game franchise in gaming history(with it becoming close to 1st). B&K as a franchise is not even close to that, and the wording was more off than exaggerating. It's not only the Smash bubble that knows him, but the point isn't all that off either. Banjo is fairly niche as is as a series. Many thought it was obscure, but it really isn't. Of course, the iconic part of the franchise has been gone since the 64, but that doesn't mean it's inactive/not known.

If you want to look at a more iconic franchise, which is more of a point of what people are saying, Minecraft slaughters B&K hard. This doesn't mean Steve is an obviously better choice either, of course. IMO, I think he is, but that's just an opinion. I think his gaming icon status is something to be praised.

Smash is in no way destined to be some playground for "Everyone" and I really pray Sakurai fulfills this **
SEGA was represented with Sonic, but we still got Bayonetta and Sonic. Same with Konami and Snake/Belmonts.

Phrases like who "gets a pass" or "belonged in Smash" or "not destined" are completely arbitrary criterias and by no means are real arguments against Resident Evil.

I think more people will be disappointed if Steve gets a spot before other characters from series that have way more history in gaming. Steve isn’t that big of an icon in gaming compared to characters that have been around for years
No matter which character gets in, people who weren't fond of them in the first place will be pleased.

Also, Minecraft has been around for ten years. If Bayonetta and Joker can get in despite being younger than some other iconic characters, so can Steve.

He is an icon but there are bigger icons that way more likely than Steve. Characters like Reimu are more likely because She has much bigger extensive history than majority of characters from indie games. I am not denying Steve being a big icon, my argument still stands that there are bigger and more popular icons in Japan that will bring more to the table than Steve.
