Sakuari needs a vacation. The game is already perfect; I'd be happy with 5 left and I hope for his sake (as well as the rest of the team) it doesnt go beyond that. I understand wanting to milk it and get as much possible since demand is there (its not like they're doing this when nobody wants it), but they've got plenty of other franchises to either create anew or expand upon.
Like Mario Party....this is the first Mario Party I've ever owned....why can't it get DLC?
If he's happy making the game still and it's still making money hand over fist, is there any reason to
not continue? Sakurai has mentioned that he's the most relaxed he has been while working on Smash with this DLC cycle, which makes sense given he doesn't have the pressure of an entirely brand new title on him (and this is after Ultimate seems to have overall been much easier on him too... relatively speaking to past titles). Like, sure, Sakurai could take a break. But after working like this basically non stop for nearly 30 years moving between project and project with all of his passion behind it, he's probably not really the one to take some long extended break anyway. And I mean, have you seen the way he presents these new DLC fighters? The man loves his job and video game culture, and now he's able to really build both a massive legacy that will be difficult to top and work with some of his favorite IPs, so I do think the break narrative gets a little exaggerated.
I doubt that Smash takes any money away from other projects if it's well and truly making all the crazy amounts of money it is. Best selling fighting game, best selling console game in Japan of
this entire decade, and DLC sales that have apparently been insanely good all mean that Nintendo has the money to keep supporting it until it's time for the next Smash to roll around.
Sadly, Super Mario Party is kind of a terrible base to build DLC on, so I understand why they've likely just chosen a proper sequel.
I've heard that Namco are the masters of compressing but, honestly, do we need more than 11? We're quickly reaching that point where almost all the long time favorites are in.
Of the old guard, sure, a lot of fan favorites have gotten in, but of the newer generation? There's a ton of fan favorites post the Brawl era that remain unexplored and not in the game, and that's without even mentioning the fact that there are so many interesting and creative directions to take character choices beyond fan favorites. I mean, we
in a literal sense don't need any more character beyond Fighter's Pass #5, but there's plenty of options for another 30, 40, or even 50 characters without even looking twice.
