Ok say we are going to get a surprise transition into a smash reveal. How would you prefer they do it with the following characters.

If you want an extra challenge. How would a surprise transition work for a double reveal involving two characters of your choosing.

They announce that the indie game of the year is Baba is you. The name of the game appear on the big screen. Baba then push some words to change the phrase "Baba is in". No context or gameplay, it just end like this and the show move on.

If Assist Trophies can be promoted, Shovel Knight is tied with Waluigi for my first pick.

Ironically, I ADAMANTLY didn't want him in Smash 4, because our Third Party picks were all cream of the crop, and I didn't feel like Shovel Knight was on par with Sonic, Snake, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu, or Cloud.
But now that we have more than twice that number of third parties, it's time.
Shovel Knight is the de facto "Indie Mascot".
No, Steve doesn't count. He's Microsoft now.

TBH... I should support this almost as much as I do Style Savvy, which is my most wanted in general. Cooking Mama is one of those series that seems 1st party, but isn't. A pass like this one is perfect for it.

The series was an unexpected hit and there's an upcoming game (there's over 10). The character comes from a genre that isn't really represented and also originated on a console that lacks playable reps (Nintendo DS). It's popular, entertaining, sold very well, has very strong ties with Nintendo, caters to a demographic that Smash typically doesn't cater to, etc. I also love the art style. Mama is such a fun, expressive character, and her cooking/gardening moveset would be super unique; she'd be the only noncombatant in the pass, so it'd set her apart from everyone else. I... honestly should've hyped her more.

My heart is still calling on a left-field pick being announced at TGA. 2B, Dante, Kasumi Yoshizawa, Reimu, a Falcom rep, a Sony rep, and/or Master Chief are some examples that should do the trick nicely.

For the assist trophy upgrade it's Isaac for me, and if he gets in I'm ok with anyone else. Shovel Knight would be cool too, since you could spike people by pogo jumping on their heads.
For the indies it's Hornet, who I talked about a lot.
