So assuming that we do get a character reveal at the Game Awards (which is looking very likely now IMO), at what point during the show do you think we'll see FP #5 get revealed? I'm probably guess somewhere early on in the show.

I find it cool that the Gamexplain staff also hopes for Metroid stuff at TGA as I do.
As a fellow Metroid fan, I understand you. Metroid Prime is probably my favorite game of all time and I need the Prime Trilogy on the Switch, but I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't announced soon. With the restart of Prime 4 development I guess that Nintendo wants to wait a bit more and release the trilogy closer to Prime 4 release.

I also want a new 2D Metroid. And when I say new, I'm not talking about a remake of Super Metroid or Fusion. It's time for a sequel for Fusion, god damn it.

I mean, is it that surprising that the thread called “Newcomer Speculation” mainly focuses on speculating who the newcomers are?
Actually that's a good question. Are there active threads that speculate about upcoming Spirit events and music tracks? I know we all get salty when characters we like are reduced to PNGs and Assist Trophies, but I'd love to talk about possible upcoming Spirit events with people who are more mellowed out.

No way, son, they're saving this special sauce for last. They know that a lot of people are going to be watching just for a Smash reveal, so they're going to force us to sit through the entire dang production first.

I still hope they resurrect Dread.

I remember some people speculating that the red colour of the secret Chozo memory in Samus Returns could be related to some wordplay of the word dread alongside the context of the picture.

Dread would surely be an hype reveal for TGA.

I predict Geno's mii costume will be for sale again like the Tails, Knuckles, X, Zero and Akira costumes came back as DLC again, but nobody seems to want that

We've waited way too long for the next Metroid game in the chronology.

As long as Nintendo doesn't abandon the 2.5D look and feel of Samus Returns. That was such a perfect way to keep the franchise a sidescroller while updating it and keeping it fresh. It's the first Metroid game I finished more than once because it was just so damn fun. It definitely felt like the 3DS's swan song in a way, and being able to play something like that on the Switch would be so choice.

Yeah. When I saw the secret gallery pic in Samus Returns I freaked out but at the same time I felt hyped. I think it's some kind of hint for a future game.
Below the illustration it said "2D/10" if I recall correctly, that's why I'm assuming Mercury Steam is doing another 2D game. A new one, I hope.

About Dread, yeah, that title always sounded very cool and fitting for Metroid. I don't think they would bring back that name if they make another 2D Metroid relatively soon, tho.

I'm guessing that it will be somewhere in the last half hour. I think that was the case for Joker's reveal (at the very least, they had several Smash Bros. trailers before that announcement), and given how anticipated the fifth Fighters Pass character (or any Smash DLC character, for that matter) is, they'll probably want people to keep watching it for as long as possible to find out who it is.

One thing's for sure - if I see "not actual gameplay" or "not actual gameplay footage" centered on the bottom of the screen at the start of a trailer, I'm going to jump to the conclusion that it's for Smash. (a lot of Smash trailers, like Joker's, Isabelle's, Banjo's, and K. Rool's, started with that)

Smash Ultimate has a wonderful roster. I know we're all tense waiting for news, so let's try to be polite to each other. Although the last hours had been tough, it has been a fun ride, so let's talk about characters we want to be included. For me, there's only 5 characters left to be in, although i think some of them will never happen:

1. Gordon Freeman (Valve)
2. Scorpion (Netherealm Studios)
3. Leon S. Kennedy (Capcom)
4. Lara Croft (Square Enix)
5. Rash (Microsoft)

If this ever happens, this would be it it, i'd never ask for anything else again. What characters you want included so it can become the perfect Smash game?
For me, if I were to both limit it to five, as well as not include characters with existing in-game roles (sorry Waluigi...), here would be my five.

1. Edelgard von Hresvelg (Fire Emblem: Three Houses) - My third favorite Fire Emblem character (only behind Chrom and Merric) and the only Nintendo character in my top five that's still plausible. Three Houses is my personal game of the year for 2019, so getting her would be amazing. She'd bring a heavyweight axe moveset with Aymr, a wonderful music selection, a Garreg Mach stage, and would have a standout personality. And hey, being another female character and another LGBT character is a nice little set of bonuses.

2. Crash Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot) - Easily my most wanted third party character. The original Crash Bandicoot was one of the first games I'd ever played, alongside Super Mario Bros. 3 and Pokémon Silver. He was always one of my pipe dream picks, and then the N. Sane Trilogy came out...and then it came to Switch. The fact that he has a very real shot is so surreal to me now, since he was a "never ever" just a few years back. Great character, great music, and a nice N. Sanity Beach stage? What more could someone want?

3. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) - When you think of massive video game icons, many of them are already here. Mario, Pikachu, Pac-Man, Sonic...but in my opinion, Lara Croft is easily the biggest absence. Even bigger than Crash, honestly. Her characterization in the reboot trilogy further endeared me to her, and I could see Smash using an amalgamation of classic and modern Lara. Acrobatic aerials, her twin pistols, her bow, her climbing axe, a resource management mechanic to depict her surviving in the wilds of Smash, maybe different ammo types...there's a ton of ways you can go about crafting her moveset. And give she's a frequent traveler, given her line of work, there are so many possible locales to use as a stage. Gaming's most famous female lead will hopefully get her shot one day.

4. Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney) - A good-hearted but somewhat bumbling lawyer from a visual novel...he's just the right amount of quirky to fit into Smash perfectly. Phoenix is just such an endearing character from a charming set of games, and his series is basically synonymous with Nintendo, to boot. I'd love to see Sakurai's take on his moveset, especially if he goes all out with Phoenix's tendency to get put in tough spots, but always find a way out. Just imagining a trailer where Phoenix enters the Courtroom (which would double as his Smash stage), and then his tagline appears, and the gameplay portion starts with a remix of Cornered playing...it's almost too good to be true.

5. Frogger (Frogger) - An odd pick to be sure, but Frogger is probably my favorite arcade game, personally (though Mario Bros, Pac-Man, and Elevator Action come close), and a very famous one at that. I could very easily see a moveset centered around a move of his, the Frog Dodge, which would be like a spotdodge with stricter timing and endlag if you don't dodge something during it...but if you do dodge an attack, you get a massive speed and mobility bonus. He'd be a character that balances risk and reward, just as if he were darting through traffic to get home. Plus a stage called Swampy Highway is incredibly easy to envision.

So those are the characters I'd most like to see. A varied bunch, but they'd all offer something pretty great. Even if none of them make it though, I still have Chrom, so Ultimate's already pretty perfect to me. These would just be bonuses.

Keep in mind that there are legitimately people out there who discard potential newcomers simply because they believe that they cannot feasibly have a moveset for whatever reason.

There are complex characters that may be more challenging to translate properly like Heihachi, but if a 20-something year old who never made a game in their life can conceptualize and explain it in great detail (complete with videos or cute little drawings or something), then chances are that the Smash devs finally figured it out.

There are also non-combatants from visual novels, simulators, etc. A common complaint I've seen about the Sims is that there's no way something like that could possibly work. Then you provide examples of movesets and it gets people excited. I wouldn't be surprised if my Style Savvy concept got at least one detractor on board with the idea.

Terry supporters also had to explain how and why he'd be different from Ryu and Ken. I did it for Morrigan a couple of times. It seems like any fighter that isn't from ArcSys has this problem lol.

Literally any character with a sword. Discuss how they aren't like Marth or Link. Game could still use more swords; make people want this; help get rid of the stigma.

We bring up movesets when echoes are brought into the equation. Can it work? Is it loyal? How different would they be? Etc.

Who the character will be is important, but so is how they'd fight. Part of KOS-MOS' appeal is because she's the futuristic robotic equivalent of a Swiss army knife. Everytime someone asks why her, her arsenal is usually brought up in some capacity.

The focus will shift on moveset potential when we get our reveal, assuming that the character isn't dropped shortly afterwards. It's important and people care about it, but it's also understandable that right now the focus is mostly on the guessing game.

Samus Returns is a really good game. If you ask me I like Fusion, Super and Zero Mission more than Samus Returns, but because the first three games I mentioned are excellent in my opinion. Also, Samus Returns is a remake of Metroid 2, a game that was a thing of his time (it was developed with the Gameboy in mind) and that had it's limitations. So Samus Returns, being a remake, couldn't be super different in terms of concept and level design.

As for metroid fusion sequels go i have to admit that i would LOVE if from software developed an exclusive game for nintendo and it's a metroid fusion sequel. not only their map building skills and interconnected world is up to teh par, but also they excell at atmosphere and pasive storytelling, that are stuff that metroid IMO benefits tons.

also, why a fusion sequel? because i Think that a great story line would be regarding humanity, samus humanity and transhumanism. as Samus keeps evolving into something "else". totally an organic continuation of fusion's story IMO. instead of a system of souls and level ups, a system of energy and dna abosrption and a bridge between chozo technology and mutations as upgrades.

I completely agree, but again, I don’t think it’s too surprising that movesets aren’t discussed much here. There are several threads dedicated solely to conceptualising movesets for potential characters, and most major support threads have entire sections dedicated to what moveset the character could bring.

I do think people sometimes take too much of a surface-level look at what a character can offer though. I was one of those people who had to convince others why Terry could be unique compared to the Street Fighter characters. Often times it feels like some just take a cursory glance at the character and dismiss them as being too generic. Moveset alone isn’t all that matters when it comes to presentation, the way the character’s personality is conveyed through their animation is also a very significant factor. Just look at how many people loved Piranha Plant solely based on how he animated.

Oh, don't get me wrong, Fusion is objectively the best Metroid game ever made, with Zero Mission at least in the top 5. (I ever played Super...I know, blasphemous, but we were a Genesis household growing up haha).

If we could get a game with the level design and storytelling of Fusion mixed with the graphics and newer gameplay mechanics of Samus Returns, I may drool over my Switch a little bit.

The "Not actual gameplay." that showed up during Joker's announcement was a hint that it was a Smash reveal, though not many paid attention to it at the time because we were figuring out what Persona 5 content was being showed at the time.

But yeah I agree. They could show a Smash reveal within the later section of the show due to FP #5 being highly speculated (Smash reveals are a big deal after all). If "Not actual gameplay footage" or "Not actual gameplay" shows up, then it's likely for Smash unless it's for something else.

I'll admit, I definitely fell into this category with Terry. I'm not a huge fighting game fan, the only SNK games I had ever touched were the old-school Metal Slugs, and it was hard to get hyped for another brawler after getting Ryu in 4 and Ken/Incineroar in Ultimate. No matter how much research you do to try and convince yourself otherwise (I watched a lot of King of Fighters videos trying and failing to hype myself up for Terry), it's hard to get excited for a character you don't know from a franchise you don't care about. I think that's just human nature.

Which was why Terry kind of blew my mind once I got my hands on him. He's ridiculously fun in ways that Ryu isn't (IMO), but I never would've guessed by looking at him or even watching his gameplay.

At the same time, I can imagine younger gamers or people who never played their games felt the same way about Banjo once he was revealed. Different strokes and all that.

I think that's important to remember: if it's a character you want, awesome! I'm glad you got your fighter and you deserve to be happy! If it's not a character you wanted, it's cool to be disappointed, but at least wait and see how they play before calling them a waste of a slot or whatever. Y'know?

Jon did agree with Andre over Geno being a strong choice for FP 5.

They worship a guy who got kicked out of Sabi's server as a god so I'm calling this as petty vengeance
Maybe, but his other prediction was Pyra/Mythra (and agreeing with Geno).
He also talked about a Xenosaga trilogy switch port and NMH too, there's more than just Smash you know

I hope the next fighter will be an interesting character like KosMos instead of another anime swordie. I don’t have a problem with sword characters, it’s just they’re not likely to be interesting as Hollow Knight or Dante.

Since, we are talking about KOS-MOS again; I have to state that while I think she is pretty unlikely, I would love it if she got in (or if some Xenosaga ports/remasters released on the switch). The music in the Xeno series is very good, but it sucks that Smash represents so little of it (even then I'd say it's poorly represented among the ones that are in).

She would also hint heavily at Reimu and Ryu Hayabusa being playable, which would be cool.

But who knows, maybe there is that 1% chance that the cat leak and the GA leak are true; and we do end up getting KOS-MOS in Smash.

At the very least it's nice to see people talk about KOS-MOS. The leaks have definitely increased her popularity.

"Wow! I never expected KOS-MOS!!! to be the next fighter!"
"Yes indeed. We knew KOS-MOS!!! would be a surprise to everyone."
"So when can we expect to see KOS-MOS!!!?"
"KOS-MOS's!!! breakdown and shadow drop will take place sometime later."
"No specifics?"
"Nope."
"Ok."

All I know about Xenosaga is that KOSMOS has a knife to show her boobs. Also there's some immortal guy who has a hard-on for wheat called Albedo

This rule should also apply to every instance of PAC-MAN, FINAL FANTASY VII, DRAGON QUEST, FATAL FURY, THE KING OF FIGHTERS, and UNDERTALE.

Interestingly, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG was all caps in Brawl, but was changed for Smash 4 onward.

So PAC-MAN's name is supposed to be in all caps? I couldn't tell if that was the case or if it's just that the font is in all caps.

It makes sense for acronyms and stylized titles to be in all capital letters but I want GOOIGI to be in all caps because f*** yeah.

His name is intended to be in all caps. If you look at the character select screen, every character's name is written out normally (Mario, Sonic, Cloud, Mewtwo, etc.) but Pac-Man is written as PAC-MAN. It should apply to all tips that mention him by name as well.
