This whole back and forth, "will he make it or won't he" sequence of Phoenix Wright being seemingly leaked, then the leak confirmed fake, then seemingly deconfirmed, then some doubt thrown into that deconfirmation... it's like an actual case in the Phoenix Wright games. It's exhaustive, yet thrilling in a way, and I can almost hear the famous Pursuit theme playing in my head now.

Anything could happen between now and the VGAs, but for now, I'm gonna hold out hope for Wright clawing his way to victory and the Fighter 5 spot.

Dark Souls is owned by Namco that's for sure
Sekiro was published by Activision but I think they co-own the IP with FromSoft but I'm not really sure about that

The Dark Souls IP is at least partially owned by Bamco IIRC so it's still dead. Sekiro and Bloodborne have a chance since they're published by Activision and Sony respectively but they have as much of a chance as I have of winning the lottery

Well, at worst we should know a 100% by later tonight or early tomorrow if Capcom is truly out of the pass.

I'm going to assume they are, as the only frontrunner they had still running was Phoenix Wright (unless you count Ammy; both Dante and RE were struck down).

I fully expect to wake up tomorrow with Sora disconfirmed.

Nope, no news on those fronts. I'm not sure why those two were not mentioned.

As far as Capcom is concerned, the most I've seen between them and Tencent is a Street Fighter mobile game. Likely there A) are no plans for Switch ports or B) things haven't been finalized.

Capcom is out and so the only remaining big Japanese companies left are Konami (who have no options, considering that Bomberman is an AT) and Arc System Works (who would be redundant with Terry).

Wouldn't count out Koei if they're not disconfirmed as a company. They also have an AT and no playable characters as of yet.

And finally, a note on the pre-orders over in China: there are two official webshops selling Chinese Switch pre-orders. One of them, JD.com (really big site in China) has a live tracker, and can thus be more reliably tracked - and it claims a number of 65K+ within the first day. Tencent's official store, TMall (even bigger than JD), apparently also has a lot of preorder bundles sold out. Note that A) Tmall offers all kinds of bundles, including Switch + NSMBU + Odyssey + Mario Kart 8 for $425, and B) the Switch got 600K within the first month in Japan.

Hollow Knight is 2 and a half years old? I stand corrected. That's news to me. Either time went by super fast that I FORGOT it came out in 2017, or I simply wasn't paying attention, teehee.
I feel like comparing HK and Persona is still kinda weird though, like yeah P5 is a young game, but Persona as a whole has always had a pretty decent sized following since 3. The only reason P5 is getting repped and not P3/4 is simply because of advertisement; it's the most recent game. I'm sure that they'd put in Yu or Minato if P5 was still being worked on. Plus, Persona as a whole is related to the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, which is really old. Atlus and Ninty go waaay back... it was one of the very few companies to have a game on the Virtual Boy even. Persona has stood the test of time, I feel.

It's true that the Knight has more international appeal than Reimu, but the Knight needs more longevity. He's just simply too young imo. I can totally see why people want him in. I want the Cuphead brothers in, like imagine Cuphead music in Smash... that'd be fantastic. But I think it's best to wait and see Team Cherry make more games and continue to do stuff that will make a massive impact, you know?

I do definitely feel like we're getting an indie at some point. They just, again need a little more star power so they won't feel nearly as out of place in a game filled with third party juggernauts. And yes. Even if Terry is pretty unknown now, he is very important to the world of fighting games and Smash would have not existed if it weren't for the KoF franchise.

I mean, you're right about Persona having a much longer history than the comparison would imply, but at the same time... I feel like this whole "not enough legacy" argument repeatedly gets brought up with indies more often than with other suggested series. Some of these indies have already made a pretty big impact during the short timespan they've been around. Why should we have to wait for Hollow Knight, or Cuphead, or Undertale, or whatever, to stop being "too young" to get in? The games are already good, and if they don't get remembered all that well in the future... the worst that can happen is that people in the future will look at them being in Ultimate with the same befuddlement that more casual audiences have towards characters like Captain Falcon and Ice Climbers. It's not like they're gonna have to carry the characters over to Smash 6 if it turns out that the games were flukes in their developers' carers.
