Phoenix Wright's outlook might seem very bright but I also feel like people are forgetting Monster Hunter. Technically the hunter was never out of the running, Rathalos only came with himself and his spirit. It's almost as if the team was holding back on adding more Monster Hunter content since no other monster besides Rathalos got spirited, which seems very bare-bones.

After the Resident Evil cast got spirited this might not seem like a strong case anymore, but I believe there is a distinct difference between base game content and DLC content. With the base game the team could go all out and add who they want as spirits, and since Capcom is so easy to work with I'm surprised there aren't more monsters represented as spirits besides the one we got with Rathalos. RE on the other hand got spirits while in the DLC phase, the team has fewer employees working on the game as the DLC is being developed, and they still have to make the next stage and fighter. Of course this might not mean anything and Monster Hunter might get more spirits later on alongside the hunter mii costume, but the fact that it didn't happen yet leaves Monster Hunter as a possibility to consider.

Basically I'm saying don't sleep on Monster Hunter just yet, until the mii costume returns the series still has a shot at getting a playable fighter.
monster hunter also came with two music tracks, which would present an odd case of having to move them out of the nintendo-general stages tracklist and into a new one

I can't help at feel that Monster Hunter and Chosen Undead from Dark Souls would have similar movesets both being characters from series that focus on dodging first and all attacks are slower and more deliberate.

Than again, we got 4 Marth, three Links and two Marios.

It's not that weird that MH didn't get more spirits, neither did Bomberman or Virtua Fighter (or Rayman).

Which is why KOS-MOS appears in Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Yeah, as a Cameo, which t-elos was as well.
Xenogears is owned by Square-Enix
Xenosaga is owned by Bandai Namco
Xenoblade is owned by Nintendo

In fact, Xenoblade originally wasn't going to have the word 'Xeno' in it at all, it was a decision made later as a reference to its chief creator also creating Xenogears and Xenosaga.

The KOS-MOS & t-elos in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are also completely different characters considering of course neither of them were Blades in Xenosaga, they were Androids, and the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Xenosaga are clearly different.
It was likely that Namco just let Nintendo/Monolith use the characters as a fun surprise for long time Xeno 'series' fans akin to how Tetsuya Nomura did character designs for the game despite working for Square-Enix, which he did so as a sort of favor for a friend.

How does that comparison even work?

Joker isn't a clone of Hero just because they both come from JRPGs.

You could say that, but what's weird is the disappearance of the hunter from the spirit list. The characters you listed would obviously be the playable reps of their respective series, the hunter would be in that case and they aren't represented in Smash. That's what I'm trying to point out.

It's more a matter of how the games feel to play than their genres.
I'm just not sure what gameplay features they'd focus on to make them more different. (Cloud and Joker focus on their game's Limit mechanics, Hero focuses on the MP System)

I've only played Monster Hunter on Wii and a bit of Bloodborne so if someone could elighten me, that would be great.

rathalos is the most iconic 'character' in monster hunter, and the one featured in smash, so it gets a spirit - it's just an odd case where the 'playable' character, i.e. the hunter, isn't the go-to iconic crossover character

it's not that strange imo

See also, Mii Costumes.
Instead of the main protagonist of Undertale, Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters we got the Final Boss, The prominent female chatacter and the edgy rival respectively.

Who here still believes in the WoL leak (16 slots) and so might get 2 more Season Passes?

I'm one of them given Sakurai saying "Trying to please as many fans as he can".

I'm 70% sure it is going to happen with the 30% being trying to figure out who could be added, especially if Assist Trophies are off the table.

But the spirit is simply reflective of the material from the series they chose to represent. If they strove for playability, the hunter would be the way to go, but choosing a monster instead (the most recognizable and well-known monster from the series) is not an unfaithful representation either.

Given the choice they went with isn't strange, and that series in similar situations were only represented by the included character, it's not an outcome so abnormal that theory-crafting is really warranted.

Yeah they didn't give the hunter a spirit, but some people don't see the hunter as the draw/focus of the series. It's not always about playability.

I can certainly see that happening. Not just that or the Chinese release, but Nintendo's also designated Ultimate as an "ever-green" title and told investors this:

"Consumers who purchase a new Nintendo Switch system for the first time today view these evergreen titles as equally viable to new titles."

Couple this with Sakurai's stated interest to push as far as he can manage, and I'm believing in the 16 slots / 2 more Passes worth at least.

(Edit: Out of the 7 games designated as "ever-green", Ultimate's 2nd only slightly behind MK8DX)

Seen 'em all. Then I checked on the Verge comment and it was just another comment. Like, just because he said good things about it doesn't mean it's guaranteed. I mean, when did this mentality start anyway?

Ugh, this is why I hate this community sometimes...always willing to do anything for any piece of information. But I admit that I am guilty of this too.

Nintendo's Evergreen strat is so strong I STILL can't find a decent price on New Super Mario Bros 2

Just gonna add this in here...

2B for Smash please
This really does address an unnecessary sticking point so many people seem to have as they question what's in it for a company lending their character to Smash should they not have any upcoming release or Nintendo release or what have you: money. These are businesses we're dealing with.

Money is a sufficient motivator. Money is a more sufficient motivator than the promotion the character will provide.

Far from Smash
In the end, they're going to be put on the Goodbye Bus because deep down, even they want Xenosaga to happen.
They even have their own Robot girl!

This ain't over...

OK, so realistically it probably is, and my time would be better spent screaming at Namco, SEGA, and the like for crossovers that might actually touch the things I want, but eh... Those aren't going to bring my idol game West or revive my dead franchises, so here we sit.

Wow, they did not account for shoulder pads when animating.

Has anyone noticed that Sakurai is so obviously biased for Terry and Joker, their gimmicks, animations, final smashes, music, stages, and background characters are ridiculously way better handled than Hero’s and Banjo’s stuff? I almost feel bad for the people who wanted Banjo and Hero in smash.

also he said that this was no hint So there’s a slight possibility that he haven’t heard kosmos as cp5 that’s just me
I wonder how many will take that as one?

Hey guys, Super Smash Bros. and Super Mario Bros. are clearly part of a single series. They share the words Super and Bros., are made by the same company, share similar mechanics (like the platforming aspect), you even have characters like Mario, Luigi, and Bowser Jr. show up! What more do you want?

tbf, Terry and Joker hail from series sakurai is a major fan of.

If you enjoyed something so much, you would make sure to put extra care and passion into representing it well.

It could be interpreted either way. But I hope that when I wake up tomorrow (in my time), there will be some sufficient news.

I-Is....Wright really that boring? Other than Villager, and Isabelle, Wii fit, and MAYBE Duck Hunt, we should have characters who don't fight normally.
