This video just reminds us of another possibility: what if an assist trophy end up being fighter #5? That'd blew everyone's mind out of the predictability radar. This Fighters Pass doesn't apply too much on rules (Joker has never being on a Nintendo platform and Banjo is now from a rival company for example), so i think that's pretty much possible.
Character 5 is whoever they decided they wanted it to be. There's no precedent on them saving a big hype announcement for last (barring maybe Bayonetta). Remember, their goal is to sell Fighters Passes. It makes sense to frontload the announcements with the characters that would drive the most sales, so more people buy it. It doesn't make as much sense to arbitrary save the last character as a big hype getter when 80% of the people who would have bought a Pass probably have by now.
Trust me, I wouldn't be mad in the slightest. Even if by some weird twist of events Rex ends up being fighter #5 I still would've bought the pass not for the Mii Costume but for the DLC, and if it happens to include my most wanted there's no way in hell I'm going to complain.
By "your favorite" I mean literally anyone else's favorite. I'd sure like an apology for basically no XBX content in the game. Or no Wario Land content in the game. ...Or no SMT content in the game.
It'll be sooooo hard to program. To me, it's plausible to rerelease the game with an update that promoted them to playable. At this rate, it's kinda difficult, but give it some time and it will be all good to go. The models are already built into the game anyway, so all they have to do is code a moveset for them.
I am a firm believer that things don't always have to start and end with a bang. For all we know, Fighter#5 could be revealed to a smaller audience (in a Direct) than the grander Game Awards like what everyone is hypothesizing. I mean, if you really want to set up the mood for Season 2, you can do this.
Barring the Smash 4 Trophy discussion, this is kinda plausible. I mean, they'll just have to make the Smash renders the primary Spirits while keeping the older spirits. I could be wrong, but I could see this happening.

All they gotta do is disable the assist trophy when the fighter is on stage.
And then thunder productions comes in the comments and tells everyone spirits deconfirm and move on with their lives
A few pngs, three songs (one of which I don't think is even that great), and a costume for a fighter that I don't enjoy using doesn't satisfy my needs for XC2 content in Smash.
If anything, they'd just rerelease the entire game with the promoted assist trophies.

If they do that, I could see them altering the playable characters' appearances to make them look different from the Assist Trophy character. For example, the Akira Yuki Assist Trophy uses his old, heavily-polygonal model from the first Virtua Fighter, whereas a playable version of Akira could just use his Virtua Fighter 2 appearance with a more modern-looking model.
Pretty decent explanation but at the same time, it ends up with a hypothetical situation.
Case in point, some people thought Gothitelle was going to be base roster.
There is a lot of talk about female characters, I'm hoping they know that a female character is in fighters pass.
Isn't all speculation hypothetical?
It at least gets Nintendo to say “okay, we need a character that appeals to xenoblade 2 fans!”

Joking aside, if it's a fighting game character and it follows the pattern that the four previous DLC characters have followed (a third-party character from a series completely new to Smash), it could probably be either Soulcalibur, Guilty Gear, or Mortal Kombat. If we're gonna ignore the "completely new to Smash" thing, there's also the possibility of a Tekken character.

Eh...to be fair, we were waiting for that second SE rep, and waiting to see if Banjo could be the second Grinch survivor or if they'd go for more mainstream Microsoft games. Hell, back when the Mii costume theory reigned supreme, you could say it felt like a "waitlist" for Capcom and Namco reps.
I don't really think any have much of a chance except Geno, if I'm honest, and I say this as someone who has Dixie as their most wanted character left.

I could honestly see Rex, Pyra, and Mythra being playable in the near future. Geno...is most likely there just to make the fans happy. If he gets in, there's gonna be a field day for support.
In that case, I would file him under "Somewhat likely, depending on how much post-Pass DLC we get", specifically as a Ness Echo Fighter.
Geno and Rex are the most likely, IMO.
I literally had a dream that Rex would be our free Season 2 starter, much like Piranha Plant.
I seem to remember the "the 4th character will be a female character that nobody wants" rumor from 4chan had quite a few people hopping on the rumor, and some people thought the 4th challenger pack character would be Tracer due to Overwatch switch merch showing up on the same day. Then after the SNK leak, some people thought the SNK rep would be either Mai Shiranui (this was before we found out she couldn't appear due to CERO's guidelines), Nakoruru (likely due to rumors of a female character with throwing weapons), or even Fio from Metal Slug (due to a mecha rumor that was likely made by a different anon on 4chan).
I don't see any world in which an AT gets promoted to a playable character. If they were planning on doing it, they simply wouldn't have made them an AT, right? Just doesn't add up.
