Why would I be disappointed?
Well I wasn't trying to cover why RE should be in Smash or anything, my response was to a comment about trolling. Trolling is playing off of the fanbase. I don't think that's what's happening here. The size of the series is beside the point. What you say has been true about RE for a long time, but had he put the spirits in base, it wouldn't have been considered trolling, because the fanbase didn't really entertain a RE much back then. I don't even think it's trolling right now, since I'm dubious he did this because people started asking for RE characters.
If people had been at it for years and years with RE (in a capacity greater than the occasional supporter here and there), and now Sakurai just drops the spirit event, sure, I can see that as trolling. But this really just reads like a big series getting acknowledged, regardless of fan noise.

Welp, there goes that! I can't believe this I'm still shaken by this. A whole franchise, and one of the more iconic video game franchises you could think of has been put into the Spirit graveyard. I'm actually sad right now. Don't worry, I'll be okay, but man I haven't been hurt by a spirit reveal but this one HURTS!
Looks like Lloyd and Sora are my backings.

They announced the RE spirits ahead of time, but sometime this week, they'll announce a Direct for the 29th, and there, they'll announce a Capcom character as FP5, and re-announce the RE spirits in "celebration".

If you had 201 IQ, you would have speculated FP 5 was originally Resident Evil but then Sakurai cancelled the rest of Smash DLC. These spirits were all that remained.

Technically, the tweet only specified that Chris, Leon, Jill, and Wesker would be spirits.
It didn't mention Claire, the other protagonist of Resident Evil 2.
Nor did it mention Nemesis, the main villain of Resident Evil 3 and one of the more recognizable monsters from the series (who's also made crossover appearances in other games like Marvel vs. Capcom and Project X Zone).
It's entirely possible Fighter 5 is still a Resident Evil character, just not the ones we thought were the most likely.

Nah, the fighter pass is reserved for characters that have never touched the smash series. The ones who did got put back in as dlc mii costumes. Lloyd is screwed.

Oh, well, I certainly don't think it was "Sakurai trolling." I don't even think him just dropping say Geno's Mii costume tomorrow would be trolling either though because I don't think Sakurai ever trolls like that. I just think it's a huge missed opportunity that takes a huge series and neglects it to have a relatively tiny role that somehow even Undertale beat it by. It's just a punch in the gut (and also should have been on Halloween if they had to do this lol).

Either Fighter 5 now is going to be divisive, something quite big or something quite disappointing for a lot of people. Inb4 is Monster Hunter in which they would pretty much would crash speculation.

Phoenix Wright in UMVC3 is one of the best characters I've ever seen in a fighting game. His attacks, his animations, his voice... everything about him in that game just works so well. Not that I doubt Sakurai's abilties, but I hope that if Wright makes it into Smash, Sakurai is able to do him just as good if not better.

Yep, but also... it's totally conceivable that it could've wound up with absolutely nothing. It's not like a Nintendo series where if you aren't one thing you'll probably be another. With third-parties, especially those without prior involvement, it's entirely possible you'll just be nothing.
That won't mitigate disappointment, but at least for me it sets the floor for expectations pretty low.

based on today's alleged news with Dante and taking Sakurai's "new worlds" statement literally (No Mega Man, Street Fighter, or Monster Hunter for DLC) Ace Attorney somehow became the Capcom franchise to beat. i'm still not completely sold on AA getting in but its two biggest competitors are possibly deconfirmed.

Fatman is saying that the 3 names he's hearing are Lloyd, Nightmare, and Sol Badguy right now. Obviously we all know that he's not the most credible, but thought it might be interesting for speculation sake to drop it in here because all 3 don't seem unlikely.

I find it interesting the spirits have guns present knowing how Sakurai feels about firearms.
I suppose it really came down to the fact Sakurai couldn't really find a way to tone them down for Smash? Joker and Bayonetta don't use real ammunition after all

Wow...RE getting deconfirmed was unexpected. I never thought a RE rep was going to be playable, but that's got to sting for some of you.
Also, I apologize if this has already been discussed, but quick question: have we ever received third-party spirits like this? Heck, have we ever received third-party spirits outside of DLC ever? I mean I guess we got Tetris spirits, but no one ever (seriously) thought the tetraminos were going to be playable.
This seems kind of out of place. I feel like there must be a reason for this. Is there a RE Couple that with the Dante rumors and then their immediate demise...I'm feeling a shift in the wind. I was on the Bamco train, but now I'm leaning team Capcom.
