For DLC, just Banjo-Kazooie. Though truth be told I had very few personal desires left after the base game's release. I traditionally thought of them as very unlikely to ever happen due to the Microsoft holding the rights to the series. Just another reason Ultimate is truly special.Since we have no news on FP5 yet, here's a simple question for ya'll:
How many characters you wanted in Smash are currently in the Fighter Pass? Right now, I'm 0 - 4, which kills me inside that this Fighter Pass hasn't had anyone that I wanted to see.
I wrote this post over six years ago:
https://smashboards.com/threads/roster-discussion-thread-closed.324219/post-15357951
is currently the only fighter that I wanted that made it into the Fighter Pass.
Other than that, I got 5 of my most wanted in the base game ().
So... with added, I got 6 out of my 10 most wanted characters.
The other 4 of my most wanted were Bandana Dee (Spirit), Isaac (Assist Trophy), Lloyd Irving (MIA), and Medusa (Spirit).
I'd love it if Shantae made it too (via post-Fighter Pass), though she's currently a spirit (and we don't know if spirit characters will get a second chance).
After that, anyone's a bonus for me.
The base game was incredibly surreal for me personally. So many things happened for it that I never believed would ever happen.Just , but I'm a pretty big Persona fan so even if I didn't expect or actively want it, I loved 's inclusion as Persona 5 became all time favorite.
Those two, especially the former being a longtime pipe dream and basically my last major request after , more than carry the Pass for me.
As can be seen in the linked post above, Castlevania was something I highly doubted would ever happen in Smash Bros. Not only, did we get a Castlevania character but TWO and a ton of content as well (an Assist Trophy, a boss fight, an item, over 30 songs, and a large selection of spirits).
Ridley was my single most wanted character for nearly 20 years, and I thought he would never make it in after Sakurai shot him down in that November 2014 interview. It is still incredible to me that he is actually playable in Smash Bros. It was a dream of mine going all the way back to childhood, and I thought the probability of it ever happening after November 2014 was very low due to Sakurai's own stated personal feelings on Ridley being resized. I am still thankful and grateful that Sakurai re-evaluated his stance and him and his team were able to figure out a way to re-size Ridley and still make him feel and look like Ridley. I honestly wish I could personally thank him on this one alone.
Every single character returning was also very incredible to me. From the very beginning of Smash speculation, there was very bitter debates about who would return and who would be cut. Being at the forefront of the support to bring Roy back, I felt for the fans of other cut veterans and wished that someday their personal favorite characters would return too. Everyone is Here was amazing.
Not only that, nearly every stage was brought back, so now people could enjoy Ultimate's roster in installments that they did not show up in.
The echo selection was fantastic, and proved what I said 10 years ago, that people would love clones if the selection was among characters that had sizable fanbases.
On Dark Samus in particular, that might be one of the most incredible character inclusions in all of Ultimate (base + DLC) and that really says something. To give it into context, she is a character whom I thought whose prospects of ever making the roster was over after Brawl's release. Heck, even after Zero Suit Samus's confirmation, I thought her chances were dire because I could not see Metroid getting three newcomers in a single Smash title, and out of Ridley and Dark Samus, the former was far more highly requested. I felt Dark Samus's best chance of making it into Brawl over Ridley was if Sakurai and his team saw her as clone material and made her as a last minute character addition (which might have happened with Ultimate).
Who would have guessed back in 2017 that out of Kirby, Donkey Kong, Starfox, and Metroid, that Metroid would be the first to four slots when Ridley was shot down by Sakurai and Dark Samus irrelevant in her own franchise for a decade (and dead for good within it) as well as seemingly having few requests for her. People thought that at that point that Sylux was the most likely Metroid newcomer going forward, and that largely hinged upon on how well received Prime 4 would be.
My dream prior to Brawl's announcement would be that Metroid would get both Ridley and Dark Samus as newcomers. However, when Zero Suit Samus got announced, I realized it would only be one or the other at best, and felt that getting both of those characters was extremely unlikely.
I felt the same about Castlevania. I felt with Snake being Konami's guest fighter, Castlevania had no shot since the consensus was that each third-party would be locked to a single playable character. Secondly, the Smash Bubble (or chatty part to the Smash Bros. fanbase that drives most discussion and what characters end up being "popular") seemed to care very little Castlevania, and among those that did there was very little consensus (many were divided between Simon, Alucard, Soma Cruz, and several others). I am still quite (pleasantly) surprised and thankful the franchise made Ultimate's base roster.
Even amongst relatively Nintendo characters like Pico and Leif, both got something in Ultimate. Leif made his first ever appearance in Smash Bros. series as a spirit (which is still something considering that Thracia 776 is the only FE that has no songs in the game, and Leif's Thracia 776 artwork is the only piece of Thracia 776 content in Ultimate).
For Pico, if you look a few posts down in the link I gave earlier:

I said how I would be ecstatic if he even gained an Assist Trophy role. While it was not an Assist Trophy role or a Mii costume, I never thought I would ever be controlling Pico's F-Zero machine (the Wild Goose) in Smash Bros. It was a one of the biggest standout moments in Ultimate's Adventure mode for me personally. I thought it was unlikely for Pico to ever get some sort of elevated role in Smash Bros. beyond spirit/sticker/trophy due to the F-Zero series being dormant since 2004 and there in general being few requests for him. Using Pico's spirit to ride in his F-Zero machine was a little way of sort being able to "play" as Pico in Smash Bros., and I really enjoyed it for the time it lasts in World of Light.
I honestly feel bad for desiring anything more for Smash Bros. at this point. I have been spoiled rotten. As I said many times before, the last strong character desire I have at this point is Dixie Kong (and her prospects are poor considering the DLC after the Fighters Pass will probably be all third-party with the closest thing to a Nintendo character being Geno). Honestly, she feels like the final piece to the puzzle, but as I said before, I do not feel like staying around for another speculation epoch just for her (especially when a lot of characters that I personally like will likely be on the chopping block). I hope somehow she does make it as DLC for Ultimate's legendary roster, but I know her chances are very low right now.
At this point I am just wait and see. I do not have much to say anymore in regards to speculation. I have some ideas as to who they will probably close out the pass on, as well as some speculation on who some of the post-Fighters Pass DLC characters will probably be. Although it probably is not anything that has not already been said before, but it might be interesting to a few people here nonetheless.
Great job. You really showed the legacy SNK's games have had to the people here at SmashBoards. Thanks to your efforts I think much fewer people will be inclined to call Terry, "Hat Ken" or a "waste of a slot". You really did a fantastic job that puts many of my better works to shame (its certainly formatted better than most essays I have written). I am glad that you got one of dream picks in Smash (hardly anyone was thinking a SNK character had a good shot).
I did it... it's finally done...
So back in February, I made a deal that if Terry (or Kyo) got into Smash that I'd write a 10 page history on the history of SNK.
2 months after Terry's reveal and a little over a week since his release... it is now complete.
With pictures, double-spacing, and a references page, it stands at 36 pages. I didn't think it'd be this long but I wanted to talk about all the important games and characters. I don't think I've ever written a paper this long.
There are a few things I probably could've covered (like Athena and a few other games) but overall I'm satisfied with how it turned out.
It's split up into sections so use the sidebar on the left to help navigate.
Please read it whenever you can because I don't think I'll ever top this in terms of effort.
