Since we have no news on FP5 yet, here's a simple question for ya'll:

How many characters you wanted in Smash are currently in the Fighter Pass? Right now, I'm 0 - 4, which kills me inside that this Fighter Pass hasn't had anyone that I wanted to see.
For DLC, just Banjo-Kazooie. Though truth be told I had very few personal desires left after the base game's release. I traditionally thought of them as very unlikely to ever happen due to the Microsoft holding the rights to the series. Just another reason Ultimate is truly special.

I wrote this post over six years ago:
https://smashboards.com/threads/roster-discussion-thread-closed.324219/post-15357951
:ultbanjokazooie: is currently the only fighter that I wanted that made it into the Fighter Pass.

Other than that, I got 5 of my most wanted in the base game (:ultridley::ultkrool::ultisabelle::ultdarksamus::ultsimon:).

So... with :ultbanjokazooie: added, I got 6 out of my 10 most wanted characters.

The other 4 of my most wanted were Bandana Dee (Spirit), Isaac (Assist Trophy), Lloyd Irving (MIA), and Medusa (Spirit).

I'd love it if Shantae made it too (via post-Fighter Pass), though she's currently a spirit (and we don't know if spirit characters will get a second chance).

After that, anyone's a bonus for me.
Just :ultbanjokazooie:, but I'm a pretty big Persona fan so even if I didn't expect or actively want it, I loved :ultjoker:'s inclusion as Persona 5 became all time favorite.

Those two, especially the former being a longtime pipe dream and basically my last major request after :ultkrool::ultridley:, more than carry the Pass for me.
The base game was incredibly surreal for me personally. So many things happened for it that I never believed would ever happen.

As can be seen in the linked post above, Castlevania was something I highly doubted would ever happen in Smash Bros. Not only, did we get a Castlevania character but TWO and a ton of content as well (an Assist Trophy, a boss fight, an item, over 30 songs, and a large selection of spirits).

Ridley was my single most wanted character for nearly 20 years, and I thought he would never make it in after Sakurai shot him down in that November 2014 interview. It is still incredible to me that he is actually playable in Smash Bros. It was a dream of mine going all the way back to childhood, and I thought the probability of it ever happening after November 2014 was very low due to Sakurai's own stated personal feelings on Ridley being resized. I am still thankful and grateful that Sakurai re-evaluated his stance and him and his team were able to figure out a way to re-size Ridley and still make him feel and look like Ridley. I honestly wish I could personally thank him on this one alone.

Every single character returning was also very incredible to me. From the very beginning of Smash speculation, there was very bitter debates about who would return and who would be cut. Being at the forefront of the support to bring Roy back, I felt for the fans of other cut veterans and wished that someday their personal favorite characters would return too. Everyone is Here was amazing.

Not only that, nearly every stage was brought back, so now people could enjoy Ultimate's roster in installments that they did not show up in.

The echo selection was fantastic, and proved what I said 10 years ago, that people would love clones if the selection was among characters that had sizable fanbases.

On Dark Samus in particular, that might be one of the most incredible character inclusions in all of Ultimate (base + DLC) and that really says something. To give it into context, she is a character whom I thought whose prospects of ever making the roster was over after Brawl's release. Heck, even after Zero Suit Samus's confirmation, I thought her chances were dire because I could not see Metroid getting three newcomers in a single Smash title, and out of Ridley and Dark Samus, the former was far more highly requested. I felt Dark Samus's best chance of making it into Brawl over Ridley was if Sakurai and his team saw her as clone material and made her as a last minute character addition (which might have happened with Ultimate).

Who would have guessed back in 2017 that out of Kirby, Donkey Kong, Starfox, and Metroid, that Metroid would be the first to four slots when Ridley was shot down by Sakurai and Dark Samus irrelevant in her own franchise for a decade (and dead for good within it) as well as seemingly having few requests for her. People thought that at that point that Sylux was the most likely Metroid newcomer going forward, and that largely hinged upon on how well received Prime 4 would be.

My dream prior to Brawl's announcement would be that Metroid would get both Ridley and Dark Samus as newcomers. However, when Zero Suit Samus got announced, I realized it would only be one or the other at best, and felt that getting both of those characters was extremely unlikely.

I felt the same about Castlevania. I felt with Snake being Konami's guest fighter, Castlevania had no shot since the consensus was that each third-party would be locked to a single playable character. Secondly, the Smash Bubble (or chatty part to the Smash Bros. fanbase that drives most discussion and what characters end up being "popular") seemed to care very little Castlevania, and among those that did there was very little consensus (many were divided between Simon, Alucard, Soma Cruz, and several others). I am still quite (pleasantly) surprised and thankful the franchise made Ultimate's base roster.

Even amongst relatively Nintendo characters like Pico and Leif, both got something in Ultimate. Leif made his first ever appearance in Smash Bros. series as a spirit (which is still something considering that Thracia 776 is the only FE that has no songs in the game, and Leif's Thracia 776 artwork is the only piece of Thracia 776 content in Ultimate).

For Pico, if you look a few posts down in the link I gave earlier:
https://smashboards.com/threads/roster-discussion-thread-closed.324219/post-15357963

I said how I would be ecstatic if he even gained an Assist Trophy role. While it was not an Assist Trophy role or a Mii costume, I never thought I would ever be controlling Pico's F-Zero machine (the Wild Goose) in Smash Bros. It was a one of the biggest standout moments in Ultimate's Adventure mode for me personally. I thought it was unlikely for Pico to ever get some sort of elevated role in Smash Bros. beyond spirit/sticker/trophy due to the F-Zero series being dormant since 2004 and there in general being few requests for him. Using Pico's spirit to ride in his F-Zero machine was a little way of sort being able to "play" as Pico in Smash Bros., and I really enjoyed it for the time it lasts in World of Light.

I honestly feel bad for desiring anything more for Smash Bros. at this point. I have been spoiled rotten. As I said many times before, the last strong character desire I have at this point is Dixie Kong (and her prospects are poor considering the DLC after the Fighters Pass will probably be all third-party with the closest thing to a Nintendo character being Geno). Honestly, she feels like the final piece to the puzzle, but as I said before, I do not feel like staying around for another speculation epoch just for her (especially when a lot of characters that I personally like will likely be on the chopping block). I hope somehow she does make it as DLC for Ultimate's legendary roster, but I know her chances are very low right now.

At this point I am just wait and see. I do not have much to say anymore in regards to speculation. I have some ideas as to who they will probably close out the pass on, as well as some speculation on who some of the post-Fighters Pass DLC characters will probably be. Although it probably is not anything that has not already been said before, but it might be interesting to a few people here nonetheless.

I did it... it's finally done...

So back in February, I made a deal that if Terry (or Kyo) got into Smash that I'd write a 10 page history on the history of SNK.

2 months after Terry's reveal and a little over a week since his release... it is now complete.

With pictures, double-spacing, and a references page, it stands at 36 pages. I didn't think it'd be this long but I wanted to talk about all the important games and characters. I don't think I've ever written a paper this long.

There are a few things I probably could've covered (like Athena and a few other games) but overall I'm satisfied with how it turned out.

It's split up into sections so use the sidebar on the left to help navigate.

Please read it whenever you can because I don't think I'll ever top this in terms of effort.
Great job. You really showed the legacy SNK's games have had to the people here at SmashBoards. Thanks to your efforts I think much fewer people will be inclined to call Terry, "Hat Ken" or a "waste of a slot". You really did a fantastic job that puts many of my better works to shame (its certainly formatted better than most essays I have written). I am glad that you got one of dream picks in Smash (hardly anyone was thinking a SNK character had a good shot).

0-4 too but, while joker never did anything to me (other than being an ok puching bag occasionally), Hero became the character I never knew I wanted (I get to hear Nobuyuki Hiyama shout "MERAZOMA" in Smash), Banjo-Kazooie gives makes me feel good because of how long people wanted (even though I've never played the games) and about Terry, while not my n° 1 pick from SNK, I always liked him so he managed to avoid becoming Robin 2.0 in my eyes.

With that said, my satisfaction is currently 3-1. Hope the next fighter makes it a 4-1 even if it's not from my most wanted list.

:ultjoker:: I played Persona 5 before Joker got revealed. I didn't expect to see Joker in nor did I think he was a realistic choice. I thought Persona was too niche to get chosen for Smash, not to mention it's audience was mostly on the Playstation. Even though I liked Joker I can't say he was a character I actively wanted since I didn't even think he was possible. Cloud was one thing, but Joker was on a whole other level. So I guess I can't count him on that technicality.

:ulthero:: I played the Dragon Quest series and I enjoyed Hero's inclusion. But again, this wasn't a character I actively wanted or had on my wishlist. I dunno I was always more of a Final Fantasy fan. I kinda wanted to see Terra more since FF7 and FF6 are both my favorite FF games (With FF9 right behind them). I appreciate and like Hero's inclusion but I never had them on my wishlist for some reason.

:ultbanjokazooie: : Cool fan favorite addition but Banjo isn't a character I was crazy for. Their games were fun but they weren't my favorite platformers on the N64 (that was Mario 64) nor were they my most desired Microsoft characters (that was Master Chief and Steve). They were nice to see again, but that's about all I have to say.

:ult_terry:: OKAY now here's a character I did want before his reveal even though I thought he was unlikely. SNK was back in business but I wasn't sure if that was enough to get them a Smash invitation. Regardless I always remembered the fact that Sakurai had his inspiration for Smash from KoF, which is why I thought SNK was a possibility and didn't ignore them, and if we were gonna get a character from SNK I thought it was gonna be either Terry or Kyo, but I was leaning towards Terry more. I like the KoF games and seeing more fighting game characters in Smash is something I enjoy. Easily my favorite DLC addition for Ultimate.

So I guess that makes it a 1-3. I did enjoy every addition from the fighters pass however. So even though Terry was the only character I legitimately wanted before he got revealed, the rest of the fighters pass was alright.

I'll go even further. I'm at 0 characters I wanted in this whole version of Smash, despite having several strong possible newcomers, both first and third parties. Don't get me wrong, I like some of the newcomers we got, but they weren't what I was after. You'll easily be able to understand why I'm so irritated and desperate to see Isaac (my most wanted and objectively most deserving first party left) join the roster.
That's an odd way to spell Rhythm Heaven but ok. :p
There seems to be a lot of doom and gloom around seeing first parties as DLC even outside of the Fighter's Pass to a lot of people, but I imagine at least just a couple/few of them amongst the slots wouldn't be too unlikely and "waste this opportunity of getting all these third party characters in the same game as you could just put these first parties in the next Smash game instead, even though not only does that disregard people really wanting some characters and for them to be in this impossibly surmountable Smash game too, but at the same time people constantly talk about Geno who while yes, is third party, is also someone completely represented in the base game already through a Spirit and kinda wouldn't 'keep expanding this huge crossover', but oh we can only have that ONE 'exception' I bet, and not two or three".

0. But that's not surprising because my picks are neither popular or relevant and you apparently have to be one or the other to get in these days.

Hmm when was the last time I got a character I wanted in Smash? Think it was Bayonetta? Before that my last requested character to get in was Dedede in Brawl.

I love Rosalina, so seeing her get added in 4 was a nice surprise, but as far as my wishlist goes she doesnt really count. I never pictured her being a Smash fighter so I never put her on the list. She's above Smash.

Dante is cool. However, I don’t see him being a dlc fighter in this pass. I can tell that Lloyd and Heiheichi are costumes that are coming along with the fifth pass. What we will look for is a Namco rep that hasn’t touched Smash. I’m calling Kosmos, even if I don’t support her, but are there any Namco characters you want to call?
Bandai characters that universe hasn’t been represented in Smash at all. Pushing Lloyd/Tales and Heihachi/Tekken aside would leave one IP pretty open to be added: Digimon. :p

1-4 for me, but that one (:ultbanjokazooie:) was the last character I really wanted. All of the other must-have fighters on my wishlist were either included in the base game (:ultridley::ultkrool:), or put in 4's DLC (:ultbayonetta:), so I'm pretty happy with this outcome. Also, I'm a fan of Persona/SMT, so seeing :ultjoker: was a pleasent surprise.

0-4 as well.
I'm just waiting for Layton and Phoenix, then I can finally move on from Smash speculation as well.

Hopefully they will at least be acknowledged in someway if nothing else...

1-4. I low key wanted Joker but was actually expecting him to happen much later down the line

That's probably what irks me the most about Geno: the fact that he is made bigger than he really is.
Maybe I'm imagining things, but I feel the fanbase, overall, disregards a ton more first parties such as Isaac and RH, meanwhile it strongly believes Geno is a possibility. It's such an inconsistency. But I guess it can be at least partially explained by the fact the english-speaking boards are mostly used by Americans, and it has been clear in polls that the Geno fanbase is essentially from there, thus the visible bias.

Isaac receives considerably more support from Europe than from the US, while Geno's support stems almost exclusively from the US.

0 I guess, but I don't really need anything more anyways, the base game gave me all the characters that were necessary for me, and almost all of the characters I want are longshots, so it's no biggie. Honestly, Banjo and Terry are probably better inclusions than some of the ones I want, even if I didn't have them on my own list beforehand.

And Ridge Racer (RIIIDGE RACER!).
Reiko Nagase with a Kei Nagase (Ace Combat) alternate costume when. Reiko is a Namco mascot and the face of Ridge Racer and a costume based off of her sister would simultaneously rep Ace Combat. Cars and planes; land and sky! Two series for the price of one.

Though Ai from Ridge Racer V is better.

1 so far which is Joker due loving Persona series but I am worried that DLC 5 isn't someone I want.

1-3. However, I thoroughly enjoyed 3 out of the 4 that we got, and I'm not even halfway through appreciating everything that came in 6.0.0 (50 songs is a lot to go through).

For some reason, the amount of fun I get out of any Smash character seems completely divorced from how much I wanted them in speculation. Weird.

I don’t even care for geno that badly.
But the fact people are complaining that he has a strong fan base makes me lol.

Some of you weebs would cry tears of joy if KOS-MOS got in. That’s ridiculous. Not the wanting of a character, but the fact you can’t be happy for another group except your own.

Basically 1-4. I'm neutral on all of the current DLC at best. I'm happy for Banjo supporters but was never interested in the character. Terry fills my Capcom Vs. SNK nostalgia. Joker and Hero, I'm annoyed by.

Waiting for Scorpion and Crash. Dragonborn would be neat.

Don't know the full details but like the Papagenos video earlier said, all the **** that Namco trademarked for Tales of recently wasn't used in their last big Tales of announcement, and both the Book Icon and "Tales of Series" logos look suspiciously like a stock icon and a "This Mii costume is from the X series" kinda thing.
The fact that they're just trademarking it NOW though suggests to me that they weren't part of the original 5 DLC characters that were negotiated, like, 2 years ago. And are some of the further on DLC that's just being negotiated for now.

You've paid a visit to the Geno thread right? Half the thread has no love for any character that's not affiliated with Geno in anyway. It gets so bad to where some people there literally think they have seniority rule because they waited longer than other support groups and "deserve" Geno, and then will ***** because they have to wait longer. The only reason it's tame now is because they don't have someone like Erdrick to rant about for six months. It's ridiculous, and this is coming from someone who wants Geno.

And I'll be happy for people like TerminalMontage and Ovaltine for wanting Geno without having to **** on other characters. The people who are asses, though? Of course I wont be happy for them.

I hope they end up adding a true All-Star Mode. They probably didn't because it could take forever, but all they would have to do to counter that is to only make 5 rounds:

I'll still be happy not to have to listen to those asses whine about Geno anymore.

Kinda like the Ridley people, and the K. Rool people, and the Banjo people.

I kind of wanted it to have a difficulty system where the game you stop at depends on the one chosen.

I was a big fan of Geno back in the Brawl hype days.
I still like Geno, but since that time, my interest in him decreased a lot.
When I wanted Geno in Brawl, it was because I wanted Geno back in the Mario franchise as a regular character, and offcourse because I liked him. Seeing that Geno doll in Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga made me think that he was still remembered and that one day or another he would have returned.

Then, I learned about the copyright thing, and Rosalina was introduced (a character who has a similar theme as Geno), and I realized how Geno became less and less relevant, and got basically replaced by Rosalina.
Also, the Mario franchise became more and more casual oriented, and I started to lose interest in Mario overall (I still like it, but I'm no way the Mario fanboy I was during the Brawl days).

All this convinced me that while Geno in Smash would be cool, it makes sense that he's not in, and I can totally see why.
I would still be happy if Geno makes it into the roster somehow, but if he doesn't, then I don't care much anymore.
After all, Geno is only relevant because of its fanbase; he does not appear in a Mario game since decades, and only appeared in Smash (as a costume and as a spirit) because of the fanbase asking continuously.

If Geno makes it in the roster, I'd be happy, don't get me wrong; it's just that in all these years he became less and less relevant and I'm sick of waiting for Square's authorization for a chance to see a character I like; I prefer to think he never existed at all rather than begging a company who owns the rights and doesn't even care, I just lost my patience and I realized that a return in the Mario franchise most likely won't happen no matter how loud the fanbase is (Nintendo does not seem to be interested in buying the rights of the character too).

Even if Sakurai does the miracle and Geno becomes a DLC in Smash, it doesn't necessarily mean that he will return in the Mario Franchise as a regular character.... and the same applies to Mallow as well.

If Nintendo one day will buy the rights of the character and put him in all the Mario spinoffs, then I would go back and become one of Geno's biggest supporters, but so far, I just lost my hopes.

You get a Geno complainer every week on that thread who ask why people want Geno. They act all innocent and say they're not here to troll but you see enough of them to know that they just want to confirm their bias and see Geno fans as these irrational and rabbid fanboys wanting a dead character for no reason.

They need to also bring back Break the Targets and Board the Platforms.
Imagine having to design a course that's somewhat of a challenge for both Kirby and Little Mac. lol

Wait a minute, is Little Mac the reason we can't have Break the Targets anymore?!?

I kind of wanted it to have a difficulty system where the game you stop at depends on the one chosen.
That'd be cool. Especially if the CPU strength is either fixed or not tied to the stopping point.

Super Easy: The Original Twelve
Easy: Into the Melee
Medium: Bring on the Brawl
Hard: Of Handhelds and Home Consoles
Very Hard: Everyone is Here!

EDIT: Ooh! And each round uses the respective game's Main Theme.

They should make them modes for the Stage Builder so the community can make their own break the targets and board the platforms. In fact, why not just make adventure mode a part of stage builder so fans can make their own adventure?

Sakurai needs to put Galarian Meowth in Smash as the new Pokeball Meowth and finally put the original Kantonian Meowth in Smash as a new playable fighter once and for all.

Since we have no news on FP5 yet, here's a simple question for ya'll:

How many characters you wanted in Smash are currently in the Fighter Pass? Right now, I'm 0 - 4, which kills me inside that this Fighter Pass hasn't had anyone that I wanted to see.
I've gotten 0 characters I've supported or actively wanted between the fighter's pass or the base roster.

That said, while I never actively supported :ultsimon::ultrichter: I was still excited to see them added to Smash, along with all the other great content Castlevania got. Also, while I was always much more a Dixie Kong supporter than a K. Rool supporter, I was still pretty happy to see :ultkrool: make it in and to see the DK series finally get another rep.

TBH I don't really miss a true All Star mode after how much of a pain in the a** it was in Smash 4 doing the exact same gauntlet with every single character, with Ultimate it would be even more grueling. I think it just worked well for games with smaller rosters like Melee and Brawl anyway, especially since this game doesn't even have trophies so the reward for completion wouldn't even be that great.

I would like to see Break the Targets and Smash Run make a return though.

I know that it's unlikely as hell to happen but I still want trophies to make a return, dammit.

I think All-Star mode worked best in Melee because you were pitted against a random set of characters every time and they change colour. There was just a lot more variety than in Brawl and Smash 4 since all they do is give you opponents in order of their first occurrence so it gets really stale after a while.

I would be fine with giving only the Fighters trophies because it makes sense in context with the World of Light since you see Mario on a trophy stand in the beginning cutscene.

They should bring back trophies and tone down the amount; instead of putting countless random trophies of items and meaningless elements, just put the trophies of the most important characters from each franchise, especially those who weren't lucky enough to appear in the game as a fighter, as a boss or as an assist trophies.

Yup, I think another thing that just made me personally sick to death of All Star Mode after Smash 4 was having to do the exact same thing twice in both the 3DS and Wii U versions. At least Classic Mode (terrible as it was in the Wii U version) was different between the two versions, but All Star mode being exactly the same just with a reversed order burned me out hard on ever wanting to play it again, let alone with even more characters, even though Ultimate would only have one version.

I think the Trophy and Sticker format in Brawl was great, having trophies of the most important characters and the rest get PNGs so that we got the best of both worlds. Although I like how the Spirits were organized better than the Stickers, so maybe just add flavor text to the Spirits and I'd be happy with that and Trophies.

Just 1, :ulthero:. Although, I wouldn't say I'm dissatisfied by this DLC by any means. Joker, Banjo, and Terry are all really fun to play and worth the money, even if I never wanted them myself.

That being said, I'm a little surprised to see that 1 seems to be the consistent number in this thread. For all the rhetoric of "3rd parties have more universal appeal than first parties", it goes to show this may not necessarily ring true with the core audience who plays Smash.
