How I Met Your Mother was right. Nothing good happens after 2 am because here I am trying to test out this crackpot theory that I'm sure got mentioned here once before: I think whoever DLC 5 is, they're probably going to drop in January.
I'm basing this off amiibo release dates, because for the most part, every wave of amiibo for this game has been released roughly a week or two before/after a new fighter drops. As a quick look at the history of this to prove my point:
- December 7, 2018: The first wave (Wolf/Ridley/Inkling) is released the same day Ultimate launches. (This is the only outlier in that no new DLC character has been released near this time frame.)
- February 19, 2019: Wave 2 (Ice Climbers/K. Rool/Piranha Plant) is released roughly two weeks after Piranha Plant (January 29 - 18 day difference).
- April 12, 2019: Wave 3 (Ken/Daisy/Young Link) is released a week before Joker (April 17 - 5 day difference).
- July 19/26, 2019: Wave 4 (Pokemon Trainer/Pichu/Isabelle) is released in Japan/internationally several days before Hero (July 30 - 9 day difference in Japan, 4 day difference internationally).
- September 20, 2019: Wave 5 (Snake/Squirtle/Ivysaur) is released two weeks after Banjo (September 4 - 16 day difference).
- November 8/15, 2019: Wave 6 (Simon/Chrom/Incineroar) is released in Japan/internationally several days after Terry (November 6 - 2 day difference in Japan, 9 day difference internationally).
- January 17, 2020: The final wave representing the base roster (Richter/Dark Samus) is set to be released internationally on this date.
Using this model, we'd be likely to predict when DLC 5 is likely to drop. Assuming the character drops before the amiibo wave (based on the examples set by Plant, Banjo and Terry), we
could likely see them as early as 3 weeks before that date, which would be December 27 (Christmas week). Conversely, if we assume they drop after the amiibo (as set by Joker and Hero), we'd only need to wait a week or two after that for January 31 (the final week of January) for them to drop at the latest.
Granted, this is all conjecture at this point, but at the same time, the pattern of having a character's release being close to an amiibo wave has remained pretty consistent for 5 characters straight now, so I personally think that there is some merit to this. Obviously, this sort of hinges that we maybe get info on who DLC 5 is, and while the Game Awards seems like a good enough bet -- would help celebrate the 1 year anniversary of the game, would replicate the same stunt Joker pulled off last year -- this is still a shot in the dark all things considered. (Quick 2 cents: If it is a Game Awards reveal, I can't see anyone too obscure being DLC 5 because that'd be a possible Hero/Terry scenario, and I wager it'd help if the Pass ended strong.)
Just in case you might doubt how quick of a turnaround this is for a character to be released roughly a month or so after being revealed, it took Hero a total of 50 days (June 11 - July 30) for him to be released after his announcement. Directly applying that timeframe to the Game Awards' date under the assumption that DLC 5 is announced on that day (December 12) would put us on January 31st exactly, so all things considered, it wouldn't necessarily be too far fetched. Also, a release in January or even December wouldn't violate the conditions set out initially by the Fighters Pass ("all fighters will be out by February 2020").
There's probably a lot of holes in this theory of mine, but what do y'all think?
