that's true. but it's no more faulty than any other.

and even if you assume ALL of the discussion is occuring now, lucario is still slightly more relevant. lmao, though at least a good part of those hits occured from 1996-2006
Maybe when it comes to "relevance" but when it comes to the actual popularity it is very flawed. Being slightly more relevant then a character that was released over 10 years ago is not an accomplishment is not a good thing for Lucario.

Okay. I had some time to calm down so I wouldn't go into fury. Luckily for us, the news regarding the rosters isn't confirmed, so while I'll keep that in mind, I won't let that get to me and interfere with my activity on this forum. So I'll still stick with my prediction until we get more concrete news.

Regarding the news, I think the roster for the 3DS version should be around Brawl's size (Thought I'm predicting at the minimum 24 characters to avoid disappointment). For that version, I have a wide range, somewhere between 20-40 characters. Will need more concrete information before deciding whenever or not to go higher. We don't even know how many GB they will use. If the team is planning on using 8 GB, ChronoBound's prediction is more likely then not right. Anything lower and I doubt that's the case. For the Wii-U version, I think we'll get something around 45-50 characters (Not including transformations), which I'm confident in. I have no plans on keeping expectations low until we get more information, nor very high, but in the middle.

Link? Also, of course the 3DS one will be handicapped. It's fair because it wont be the same game! The WiiU will be a real sequel while the 3DS is a gimmick. He already said he could easily add 50 characters on the WiiU version.
Keep in mind that Sakurai always includes transformation characters. Also, while it implies that he could do it, it doesn't mean we will see them.

Pikachu - the mascot of the whole Pokemon series
Jigglypuff - fulfilling fan service on nostalgia for SSB 64
Meowth - milking on the popularity of the Pokemon anime show
Mewtwo - fulfilling fan service for Mewtwo's return
Zoroark - milking on the success of Pokemon Black/White and the popularity of the Zoroark movie and to replace Lucario
Pokemon Trainer (5th gen) - milking on the success of Pokemon Black/White and to replace the 1st gen starters

4 1st gen Pokemon and 4 5th gen Pokemon. Why not?

SSB64 - 2 Pokemon
Melee - 4 Pokemon
Brawl - 6 Pokemon (counting the starters)
SSB4 - 8 Pokemon?
This time, I think we'll see five characters slots for Pokemon, seven including transformation. I don't think we need six slots for Pokemon, although to be fair, Mewtwo and Meowth together would be nice. Either way, I doubt we'll be seeing just four Pokemon reps this time.

AND. Seriously? Come now. If they programmed Mewtwo as much as they did into Brawl, I'm SURE... 90% sure he has a chance of being in SSB4. He had Final Smash sound effects and his own victory theme, FFS! o_O Don't tell me they weren't planning to go somewhere with that.
I think Mewtwo does have a chance of getting in, but if anyone gets in the game that was scrapped from Brawl, it's going to be Dixie Kong. I'm suspecting that if she gets in, she'll tag team with Diddy Kong.

Possible bosses anyone?
I think Kraid or Mother Brain should take Ridley's place as boss. It only makes sense so that Ridley can finally be made playable.

And this is the first link that shows up when I googled "Mewtwo vs Lucario popularity". http://www.nsfcd.com/index.php?topic=32679.0
You prove nothing. How does this make Mewtwo more popular then Lucario? Find a much better source with larger amount of people voting then we'll talk.

@shortie- Just beceause something is older doesn't mean it's more popular. Fans aren't fans forever and people DO lose interest over time. that's... really bad logic lol
Let's put it this way: Old fans from the height of Pokemon's popularity don't remember Lucario. They remember Mewtwo.

keep in mind the google battle covers mewtwo's popularity from 1996-2011. 15 years

for lucario it's 2006-2011. 5 years

a third of the time. and a great deal of mewtwo's hits on google will be from a time where lucario didn't exist. and with a 3rd of the time lucario is more relevant. lol.

so in fact it IS a good thing and a VERY telling thing. what matters is who is popular now and from this method it's very obvious. but again it isn't perfect for what smash selection is looking for.

@StB- pokemon is losing popularity? lol most of the fans today are from the "new gen" of gamers.

I think popularity is not just how many people know Pokemon, it's also how good the consider the franchise to be.

Most old fans, myself included, thinks that the franchise has gone downhill in quality.

Okay, putting together my "semi-optimistic prediction list" and am wondering people's opinion: If DK got a 3rd rep, who'd be more likely: Dixie or K. Rool?

K Rool. I don't care that Dixie was in the files, K Rool is much more important and would have a moveset cooler than a collection of hair attacks.

I didn't say that. I said that Pokemon was most popular during the late 90's. There's a difference between losing popularity and having less popularity than in the past.

Seriously, man, nowadays, the only people who really talk about Pokemon are children, geeks, and nostalgic former fans. Back in the 90's, Pokemon had a much greater pop cultural presence. And Lucario wasn't around back when Pokemon was its biggest.

I'm not sure. Both have pros and cons supporting their inclusions but independently, they're likely. What's also possible (And what I want to see the most) is Diddy and Dixie Kong teaming up while King K. Rool claims the third spot.

Dear everyone that wanted Ganondorf to use his sword in Smash 4,

Sorry, there was no time.

Sakurai 7/28/13
Hahahaha! Good one!

Am I the only one who doesn't think Ganondorf needs a sword?

Ganondorf can have the same regular moves but his specials can be changed a bit.

B - he can charge his magic energy ball and shoot it straight ahead after he does his Falcon Punch

Side B - same as in Brawl

Up B - same as in Brawl

Down B - make the ground shake like Donkey Kong's Down B move after he does his Falcon Kick

Final Smash - Ganon as he appeared in Ocarina of Time, complete with dual tridents, and not like that Ganon from Twilight Princess

I didn't say it wasn't. What I'm saying is that it's much harder to notice than it was in its heyday. You don't have news reports on Pokemon any more, you don't have Pokemon parodies in other television shows any more, and there's a lot of people who are surprised to know that the anime is still running.

@refugee- those are actually searches

pikachu took 48th on the IGN poll.

and the black/white one can't apply to lucario because he's obtainable in game and there's no reason that they'd want him through dream world.

Just as good as using hits to determine a popularity of a character.

Doesn't matter, it's still a popularity poll voted on by hundreds of people.

True.

I'm glad that Nintendo is working more with the third party companies (in regarding to this article about the possibility of putting a Capcom character in) for their popular crossover game, Super Smash Bros. They worked with Sega and Konami to bring Sonic and Snake into SSBB respectively (the later was due to Hideo Kojima's bragging rights). While there may be doubts of Snake returning for the next Super Smash Bros game, a Capcom character in the next Super Smash Bros would be great. If that is so, I think Nintendo should look into the movesets in Marvel vs Capcom 3 and apply some of the moves into the Super Smash Bros. mechanics. And if possible, I think Marvel should step in and offer to put their characters in the next Super Smash Bros. game as well (since if Nintendo wants to work with Capcom on the next Super Smash Bros. and Marvel had worked with Capcom in the past, they might as well step in and work with Nintendo to put Captain America or Iron Man fighting Bowser).

And it'll be great if Nintendo can work with other video game companies like Namco, Square Enix, and Nippon Ichi. Manly because since Nintendo has shown reluctance on the idea of having Nintendo characters appearing in third-party video games as cameo when it comes to third party video game consoles (the only time Nintendo may have done something like that was in Soul Calibur and some of EA Sports games, and it was only exclusive on the Nintendo console). Having Super Smash Bros. is like an open opportunity for third party characters like Sonic to fight it all out against many of Nintendo's popular characters.

Anyways, my dream third party playable character list for the next Super Smash Bros. game (organized by company)

Capcom:
  • Ryu
  • Chris Redfield
  • Viewtiful Joe
  • Megaman/Megaman Zero
  • Chun-Li
  • Ken Masters
  • M. Bison
  • Dante
  • Arthur
  • Nathan Spencer
  • Amaterasu
  • Albert Wesker
  • Morrigan
  • Felicia
  • Tron Boone
  • Haggar
  • Guy

Marvel
  • Iron Man
  • Captain America
  • Spiderman
  • Deadpool
  • Wolverine
  • Hulk
  • Super Skrull
  • The Fantastic Four
  • Phoenix/Dark Phoenix
  • Thor
  • X-23
  • Daredevil
  • Doctor Doom
  • Magneto
  • Dormammu
  • Doctor Strange
  • She-Hulk
  • Storm

Square Enix:
  • Sephiroth
  • Cloud
  • Squall
  • Tidus
  • Firion
  • Cecil
  • Zidane
  • Jecht
  • Bartz

Namco:
  • Jin Kazama
  • Kazuya Mishima
  • Heihachi Mishima
  • Klonoa
  • Valkyrie
  • Li Long
  • Siegfried
  • Nightmare
  • Lloyd Irving

Nippon Ichi

I can't imagine folks wanting to get yet another Pikachu through Dream World.

I think Pokemon has sort of gone up and down in quality.

I think B+W was better than 3rd generation and fourth, at least story wise, since it sort of played with a few of the usual tropes in Pokemon.

But the actual pokemon designs in it seem to have been going downhill in design. More and more "semi-clones" of previous 'mon are showing up. Heck, we now have at least five pokemon (two evolutionary chains) who's shtick is that they are monkeys on fire. Every generation has at least one new electric rodent. And so on.

On the other hand, maybe this fact they are running out of ideas is actual a bit of brilliance. I mean, there are a bunch of different species of pigeons in the real world, so why wouldn't there be a lot of Pidgey-like pokemon as well?

ehhhh... searches would be more used for people who are uneducated about things and something you'd see more from people who don't have much pokemon knowledge, or aren't fans of the series. I highly HIGHLY doubt lucario's popularity spiked massively once he came into existance then died down. people don't become a fan of something for a month and then stop. people search when they want to learn :I

and that's true, but it was still only on one site. and encompassed one point in time. pikachu's position alone shows its inaccuracy.

also keep in mind pikachu slays everything on google battle... lol

@StB- Pikachu is not obtainable in black/white through normal means

Have you ever heard of the term called "fad" by any chance?

Here's the definition:

fad/fad/
Noun: An intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, esp. one that is short-lived; a craze.

Watch Sakurai pull out some obscure Pokemon that is not Mewtwo, Zoroark or Lucario
Or he revives the Plusle+Minun (think Pichu-without-selfdamage meets Ice Climbers) idea that he apparently considered enough for SSBB that they had some very rudimentary data, like I speculated.

I would imagine that folks could export one from one of the Gen IV games. There can't be that many people who really want a Pikachu and have no other way to get one.

yes I have. but they don't come and go that fast. if it was TRULY that way though lucario would probably have to be at least 10 times more searched for the numbers to really add up because of how mewtwo is fading. most of those searches were likely due to people searching about wtf lucario is or how to use him in brawl. a fan of something won't just search it on google, they'll discuss it on the places that obtain hits on google.

@StB- you can do the same thign with Lucario. you also need two DS's to transfer from GenIV

Stunfisk is this guy:

He's the most annoying wild pokemon in B+W. You so much step in a puddle and he jumps out at you.

No, actually, they do. The Macarena was a huge hit for a brief amount of time, then people quickly started hating it. There's one example.

Good point ^^^^ I guess the poll does mean something then.
there's a difference between getting another DS and transferring something over and walking into a cave and getting a riolu. but pikachu is more popular than lucario anyways. note how Arceus won probably because people missed the arceus event in GenIV

edit: there's a biiiig difference between songs and characters.
