Personally I think they would do that just BECAUSE of them all having a sword. They wouldn't be clones, which would also be possible: as Roy was a Marth clone in Melee, and Ike and Krom share in game battle animations quite obviously (amongst other similarities).I have absolutely no idea why Roy is as wanted as he appears to be. T3h phir3 never appealed to me whatsoever; the resources that would be dedicated to likely the third, or even fourth, sword user in the Fire Emblem franchise could be allocated to a character with a different weapon, or a character from a different series entirely. Diversity is never a bad thing in Smash.
But I think they'll try and make them all as unique as possible, while all being very similar to each other, with just Marth and Ike as complete polar opposites.
Roy would for example resemble Marth's fighting style most, but also that of Ike (both stronger than Marth and having projectiles instead of a B charge sword). And Krom would most resemble Ike, but be faster and weaker, and having the same sort of tipper effect on his sword as Marth (hey, the blades ARE the same, or at least counter parts) a long with some skills from FE13 as his Up and Side B.
Sword characters have been extremely popular since Melee, and their lasting appeal lies a lot with the Fire Emblem characters. Therefore I think they'll do this, in a way to safely have more sword fighters in. They can try out more sword style fighting with characters like Takamaru, Samurai Goroh, Isaac, Saki, Shulk, Magnus, the 3DS samurai kid and even Ganondorf lol.
It's clear Sakurai likes weapons anyway
