Sakurai for sure has at least some kind of loose ideas about Smash right now in his head. I mean, he isn't just gonna walk into the Sora sayin' ''Sup." to all his coworkers on the first day. He'll have a plan, you know, some sort of foundation to build on, especially with a project as massive as this (he has 2 systems to develop for instead of just one like in the past). That goes for almost anything in life, not just Smash.

But, obviously, those ideas haven't really left his head yet, and probably won't for a little while...

@SSBF- I meant feasibility, but yeah, what about an RE character? I mean, one of those characters have to be a dark horse candidate at least, right?

This! People seem to forget about Professor Layton, he is also a likely 3rd party choice that people seem to underestimate his chances due to Megaman.

If there is a third-party character besides Mega Man, it will be someone that is requested to Sakurai by the developer, not another person who is popularly requested (of which there is no one besides Mega Man).

That's because he is probably not going to happen. We have Capcom and Square Enix, two of the biggest gaming companies, with six or more of the biggest gaming franchises who are on good terms with Nintendo who still haven't gotten a character. If ANYONE should, it should be one of them. Layton can get in line.

Itagaki (the former director of the Ninja Gaiden series) said a similar thing when asked about Ryu Hayabusa being in Smash Bros., of which he said that he would like to see him appear and said that he hoped Sakurai knew some things about ninjas.

As a previous poster said, any developer with a brain would want to see their character in Smash Bros. especially considering how Smash Bros. is the biggest fighting series currently.

Right. I'm pretty sure ROB wasn't a big ticket item during Brawl's development(though that may have been because of ROB importance in Nintendo history and/or Mario Kart DS).

I think if Cloud actually had his own game on a Nintendo console, there would be a massive demand for him to be in Smash Bros. and would be by far the favorite to be Square-Enix's representative (of which Cloud is popular worldwide, as opposed to Slime having 80% of his popularity in Japan).

Personally, I would like to see Crono of Chrono Trigger as Square-Enix's representative, however, he basically has no chance for that spot.

Professor Layton is a 3rd Party character that works in conjunction with Nintendo, they recently released a crossover involving him and Phoenix Wright as well.

I don't look forward to the day when the massive flood of requests for Cloud arrives. Whenever its this game, SSB5, or later on.

Also, about Cloud's massive demand for Smash appearance if he had a major game on a Nintendo console, do you think he would be closer to Mega Man's level or Sonic's?

You have a valid point there.

But you could also argue if that we get 2 third party slots instead of one, that the big franchises like the ones you would only fight amongst each other for one slot and not affect Layton (or any other third-party franchises), while a smaller franchise like Prof. Latyon will be able to take the other slot.

Assuming Nintendo wouldn't mind the second one going to a smaller series, of course (which I doubt).

And that is part of the reason why Chrono Cross is hated by most people who loved Trigger. Snuffing out beloved characters offscreen and in a nonchalant manner is terrible writing. Really, its only Frog and Ayla who did not die horrible deaths. Magus wiped out his memory and became a wandering drunk gambler magician, so Magus at the very least is mentally dead.

As to if Cloud does end up having a game on a Nintendo console. If his game is either a remake of FFVII or a spinoff with Cloud as the hero, Cloud will almost certainly have his popularity for requests be somewhere between that of Sonic and Mega Man.

Really what it comes down to is this, he's not big enough to play with the monster companies yet. Square, Capcom, and even Namco are just better choices in terms of recognizability. Layton is a cool character, and a good choice, but he's not the best, and not in the top five......Which means he isn't in Smash bros.


OF COURSE, for all we know Level 5 could have some secret agreement with Nintendo or something like that.... but, you know. The way I see it is like this:

A Tier:
Megaman
Final Fantasy
Pac Man

B Tier:
Street Fighter
Dragon Quest
Resident Evil

C Tier:
Castlevania / Bomberman
Professor Layton
Sonic character

I mean, they even did that in Super Smash Flash. That ain't MegaMan, it's MegaMan X. Not hard at all to do the research or atleast put a tiny bit more effort in it. You can even just put "X" in the name spot.

Although, there's one last MegaMan, the one from Star Force. Does he have a specific name like X and MegaMan.EXE do?
