Mario's personality is funny, innocent, somewhat strange, sometimes ironic... although he rarely shows these traits himself.
Link's personality in Wind Waker is happy and bouncy, like the art style. While Link in Twilight Princess is calm, dreamy, but determined.
Now, Ness showed even fewer emotions in his game than Link and Mario did recently.
His personality is defined by Earthbound: he is brave, his world is quirky, strangely life-like and deep, and overall just really quirky. His only defining trait is courage, but the type of courage is defined by his surroundings.
Lucas is also part of the Mother series. His game is just as quirky. Only his story as well as his personality have more depth and drama added.
That can only be a plus as far as I can tell.
