HBox, you're pretty good at this game. You keep doing what you do. You really looked like you had a handle on the match-up this time, and your play throughout bracket was remarkably flawless--color me impressed by your performance at this one.

Let the haters hate. Maybe they'll figure it out, maybe they won't.

All this said, you should definitely, in my expert and clearly better than yours opinion, counter Young Link with Young Link. You know in your heart of hearts that truer words have never been spoken. :troll:

EDIT: Also, almost forgot: From the stream, it appeared as though you were responsible for making sure Javi v. Mango happened--and on the livestream no less. And on Gamefaqs, someone said they overheard you saying you were going to try and get Melee back on the stream immediately after Street Fighter, or something like that. If either or both of these are correct, thank you. Thank you for caring about the community and caring about the game and caring about everyone getting to watch two awesome players duke it out and trying to help us viewers at home get to see some amazing sets as they happened.

1. Hungrybox your style is boring but you're a really good player
2. Armadas YL is damn good, went even with PC chris fox etc.
3. YL vs Jiggs is even, Jiggs is peachs hardest matchup

Yeah, I asked if people wanted to see Javi v. Mango while I went to get some Gatorade

I think people shouldn't hate on Hungrybox or Armada. I mean, they did what they had to do to win and I don't care who you are, you would do the same for that amount of money and just being #1. They both played very well and I congratulate both of them for making it to the finals. I also think that in the future there will be new ways that will be used to play against Jiggs. YLink was just temporary in my opinion. I think the community will think of new ways to play Jiggs (Maybe Jiggs dittos) or just find a different character other than YLink that will be able to make the match less stale. And for those that say Hungrybox should change main lol I think that's a little too much haha. Jiggs is not like overpowered or anything lol. It's like with MetaKnight in Brawl. I don't think he should be banned because he's not that much better that the other characters (Just like M2K said). I mean ban a character? lol Come on. I have to say though, I was surprised that Hungrybox beat Mango because Mango in an interview said oh jiggs is easy all I have to do is bla bla... Well Hungrybox proved him wrong. (Unless I'm totally wrong and one of them practiced more than the other or something in that nature). Anyways, I learned a lot at Apex and won a set at my very first tourney ever so I'm happy about that :) Met some very cool people and I hope to see all of them again some day :)

I thought it was hilarious.

Also dunno why people are complaining about a low tier character winning GFs of a national.
That's just dumb.

I dunno if you remember me (it's unlikely), but I was glad that I got to tell you in person on Sunday how awesome you are for still playing this game, even though a lot of people in this community suck ****. I mean really. You don't deserve that. You legitimately care about the game, and the community (you were helping out at Apex, you run your own tournaments, you asked for Javi vs Mango), and you really want it to thrive, and the **** that you get for having a playstyle that some people don't think is "interesting" is REALLY stupid.

I'm glad that it looked like you learned the matchup a lot more, and were giving Armada a lot of close games. I didn't watch all of it, because I wanted some friendlies, but I'm going to go back and watch the whole thing. Your strength alone makes you one of my favorite players.

(end of my gushing)

Keep on doing what you're doing, Hbox. You're damn good at it. :)

Hungrybox at first I was turned off by your style and would root against you, but after watching all the hate people have towards your style over the last few years (I didn't hate, just not my favorite) and just how stupid it all was for them hating you playing to win and discounting you as a top player even though you're clearly amazing and then seeing you ignore the criticism and stick to your way, I really respected you for that. I was rooting for you at the end there, even against Javi and Mang0 (although it was bittersweet, as I didn't really want to see that young link) because I wanted to see what you had changed up and planned for Armada and thought you had the best shot other than Armada of winning. I thought you had him too after set 1.

Congrats on a solid second. I bet you can get him next time.

I agree with you hbox, but honestly, the whole thing started with you taking jigg's camping to the extreme, armada just responded in kind. I can say that if I was playing for 3k and the world champion title on the line I would be a little swayed by money to play to win. But can you honestly say you had fun playing that match up?
Do you only find this game fun when someone is getting hit? I don't see why it is so hard to believe that fighting to keep someone away or trying to work hard to find holes through a wall of projectiles can be fun. It's not like the things they're doing is easier either, and mistakes are still being capitalized on.

I also was entertained.

Football (or soccer) takes 90 minutes and ends up with a score of 0-0 relatively often, and yet it is a very popular sport to follow. Just saying. :p (I personally do not find that very entertaining to watch either though, for very similar reasons I imagine people disliked the GFs, but just to point out that you can't just define what is entertaining and what isn't)

edit: I also can't say I feel a strong resemblance to brawl when watching it either, but maybe I just dislike brawl for different reasons than those who do find it to be just like brawl... I gave up on brawl really really quickly, lol.
Oh and I actually by far prefer playing teams myself because I tend to get impatient and there's less camping, but I can appreciate watching a high level GF like this, and i'd often not even realise that the timer was close to 0 before very close to the end. It was the same with mango vs. armada at genesis1 too - some extremely long matches, but you don't even realise it because they're still entertaining and I believe a fair amount of people consider that one of their favourite sets.

I love Armada as a player. After this tournament I can say the same about you. No one should be "blaming" anyone for anything, because there's nothing to be blaming. If you play to win, I respect you. We saw an intense well-fought set. This isn't WWE, where everything is just formulated to entertain the masses. This is true competition, and it's way more entertaining because it's REAL. I could feel the tension between Hbox and Armada, two world class smashers. I guess some people will never understand how wildly entertaining watching you and Armada play is. All they see if Jiggs and YL camping each other. Too bad for them.

If you took one set, you can take two. Next time, Juan.

You played solidly hbox, I was rootin for you to beat armada and you gave him a pretty good run. I think that if you start catching bombs and throwing them back it will negate a lot of what YL is trying to do and that changes the matchup a bunch. Also, maybe you can try plankin on him too and ledge invincibility will help catch more bombs mauahaha. Return evil with evil son.

If anything armada should be the one people should be upset with. Watching him throw **** for like a hour was super lame. SMH@ people upset with your play style.
I don't think Armada likes YL vs. Puff as much as the next player. But with $3,000 on the line, I'd play with Pichu if I knew a way to beat my opponent, stale or not.

I dont get the haters. dont get me wrong after set one i decided my time would be better spent trying to get a couple more friendlies in before i left, but not once did i think the gf sucked or were stupid ect ect. mad cash was on the line as was pride from winning such a huge event. there is nothing wrong with playing to win and haters need to stop hating. YL v puff is a really intense match for both sides, and takes more skill then some people would think and people need to respect that fact and respect these players.

Haters: Get over it, guys. It's Jigglypuff vs. Young Link with $3,000 on the line. Sorry for wanting to win.

Friends and People who understand: You're what keeps me playing.

Armada: Good sets, my friend.

Apex 2012 was great.
You da man Hbox. You played so amazingly. You'll get him next time ;)
Armada definitely put in work too. Anyone who says he was "to blame" or something is equally wrong.

All the haters can **** off because nobody likes you.

And yeah, what stelzig said. Learn to appreciate these kinds of games as well. Think of it as chess or something. Don't be those hyperactive kids who demand constant action with flash and combos.

Like, there were tons of fast-paced and technical games, and upsets all around. Don't start a ****ing **** storm because ONE (okay, two) single set didn't live up to your expectations.

HBox, you're awesome.

no problem, except that that strategy doesn't work and it made you lose once again (yes I think going to DL was a mistake by Armada, should've close the set the match before tho). Maybe work on a secondary \ find a way to win matches on YS?

p.s. 'grats Armada =)
p.p.s. me not hatin' or anything btw

It's one thing to hate on people for playing defensively/whatever you wanna call it in friendlies. That is strictly for entertainment.
This was the final of an international tournament, with thousands of dollars on the line.
I know I'm basically repeating what everyone else is saying, but the bottom line is this: even if you say you wouldn't, with that much on the line, you would do the exact same thing (if you felt it gave you the best shot to win). Seriously look at yourself and say that you would go for flash instead of the money/glory/title of best in the world/etc. You're either an idiot or a liar.
You did your thing, Hbox. More than happy for you for getting all the way to GFs. I don't think there's as many haters as you think there are.

I mean it wasn't the most exciting thing to happen in Melee but it obviously took a great amount of patience and skill so for that I respect you both, good **** Hbox, you're very clearly getting better in that matchup, not ****in' out and counterpicking and just learning it is pretty awesome.

Yeah I agree, seeing hbox's progression in the mu was very interesting. Hbox is still obviously experimenting with this mu, like how he played overly aggro at first and got shut down. Then seibrik starting helping out a ton. I think with hbox's current knowledge of the mu, he can pose a very serious threat to armada.

Also, I was so happy to see hbox take out mango after all of mango's bullcrap about how "puff isn't that good" and his over-all disrespect to hbox throughout the years. Hbox, you're definitely the number 1 puff no doubt. Arguably even the number 1 player, considering the circumstances with young link. Mango isn't on your level any more. Keep it up, you motivate puffs everywhere in the world.

i was not entertained by GFs so I left
nothing against the players, there was just other things to do... in fact I enjoyed watching Brawl's GFs more than Melee's and that is just upsetting on multiple levels. but it's whatever, nothing we can really do about it other than have other players get better so Armada and Hbox aren't in GFs.

I thought the GF set was great and I feel like it's just "the cool thing" for people to show disgust for two skilled players trying to outplay one another in an extremely arduous match up.

It was a boring set, I was rooting for hbox, but I left early b/c I kinda knew what would happen (big shoutouts to hbox for bringing it to 2nd set though) and I needed to get home.

Also YL counter make it happen

at least op is not johnning for his loss, im glad to see this, altough puff is not in a position to john anyways. what i find funny is that armada still goes yl when by now his skill level is that superior that he can beat hbox most likely by going peach again, even though making the matchup extremely in mr backairs favor.

Bobby Phoenix Bieth When I pay good money to go to a tournament I expect to see full matches, not some pansy *** 3 minute matches full of combos and gimps. That'd be like buying a taco box from Taco Bell and only getting 5-6 tacos in it instead of what I fully paid for, ya know?

lol Strong Bad.

People need to remember that players are doing this because they want to win. Not to please the people watching. I'm pretty sure when they are in a finals match under all that pressure they are not going "Wouldn't the crowd go wild if I did this sick *** combo?" Unless you're Mango, then no. lol

Hungrybox approaches way more than Armada's young link does. And if he could beat Hungrybox by going Peach he probably would, its disrespectful to Hungrybox to say that Armada is so much better than him when its not terribly far off, especially considering for a period there it looked like Hungrybox might win. Also, I think people exaggerate how bad that matchup is; its bad, but I don't think its unwinnable.

it is unwinnable. peach literally has only one option to approach, the turnip pull. jiggs can bair through turnips so the approach isnt even safe. peach nair has no range at all, the crown has decent range but extreme start up lag. peach doesnt have oos options since jiggs can aim his bair back again (called spacing). i also dont know of how capable hbox is to hold the control stick away, but if he is peach cant also get combo strings off. and dont forget jiggs utilt rest as an easy kill move.

also hbox didnt approach, examine the vids more carefully.

I'm not going to lie and say that I enjoyed GF's, and I'm not going to say I enjoy Puff vs. YL. But I am in 100% agreement that Hbox is a very talented and intelligent player, and no type of discredit should go to him or Armada for playing to win.

I just dislike those types of playstyle. I'm not saying it's illegitimate, but I'm not going to watch something that I don't enjoy.

I do like the fact that Hbox has clearly made notable improvements in the YL matchup.

probably on a platform
if anyone is gonna perform in a reliable manner with an unreliable character it's gonna be armada though

i remember reading a post on here about armada beat macd with ylink instead of doing the ditto and i think i read another one about armada beating lovage (playing fox of course) with his ylink
he beat me one game that went down to us both being over like 130% and i ran into a bomb, then he decided to switch and ditto me. hard to use one tourney game that easily could have gone either way, and saying it's reliable

and i hope you are still reading this thread hbox, i was gonna post this on your wall but whatever

i'm always torn who to root for because i hate how much people ***** about your "campy/unfun" play style then go balls deep over someone who is doing something so much worse than you in terms of campy/unfun. either way i was rooting for you to win at least the first set and i'm really glad you were able to pull that through. i didn't get to see what happened the 2nd set cause i had to go pack and leave, but i'm sad it wasn't closer.

that match up sucks for you but i'm glad you were figuring out ways to get in and make your hits count. i really hope you play him in winners next time and beat him to see what he might do if you meet up again
