A mind game is anything that makes a person think stressfuly and abnormaly. So thats why trash talking is a mind game. You stress them out by giving them the surge of adrenilin to kill you

It's the people that try to give mindgames a tangible form that create the problem ("u suck cuz u hav no mindgam," "my mindgams r better dan urs," "get free mindgames here.") The solution is to ask those people to create a list of all the mindgames that can be found in SSB.

Here's a few ''mind games" I've used.
1.Running and jump around, over and between them
2.taunting while there still on th stage
3.juggle them up in the air

I agree, the word mindgame is way over used and abused. But, there is such a thing. There are some tangible mindgames, but they are so dependent and wishy-washy that it really isn't a "mindgame". For example, a n00b might be all scared and intimidated by shl's and float-cancels and Ken combos, but somebody who knows what these are aren't nearly as scrambled and can stay focused. I don't claim to be anywhere near pro status btw :). But yes, mindgames are something that just truely depend on the battle. My arguement though is that they do exist, just not in the way they're being abused verbally.

I don't see the word mindgames being abused, maybe I don't visit the right forums? All I know is that they do exist and they do tell who good a player is.

play a defensive game if that helps.
if he uses needles shine them rush then WD back into shield if you kno they like to dash attack then grab outa shield
mindgames and defensive are good against shiek(like marth)
that might help a little if you know what I'm talking about
In Mog's defense, I'm sure tons of you have seen posts similar to this. The vague, nonsensical kind that really just seems to be post count ++.

big brain academy!

Mind games are just... games played with the mind... so... if the mind exists, why don't mindgames?

I guess he doesn't believe in step-thinking or multi-step thinking either. Too bad they both exist. Mindgame is just a term that covers a vague base of step-thinking. I even use step-thinking [mindgmes] when I piss off someone.

I could think fast and make myself look innocent when someone else looks gulity or I could look for the nearest exit and try to make a run for it. During the escape I could use different tactics like fake out running towards escapes or even changing my direction completely.

None of this is supposed to make me look cool or anything, it's just an example so don't call me a show off.

All of those are mindgames, in SSBM you have many opportunities to step think, you just need to look out for them and take advance when they come.

I believe you do not understand the purpose of Exodus' post. Its not to disagree with you but to clarify.
I guess you don't believe in winning 5,000$ for coming in second at MLG.
Is that clear enough?

Exodus' post had really nothing to do with anything. It could have been much more concise had it looked like this:

In SSBM EVERYTHING you have many opportunities to step think(PERIOD) You just need to plug your brain into your spinal chord so it functions properly. This is what seperates the KDJs from the NightmareKornKids and SoraKeyBladeMasters.

I guess it's pointless to explain step thinking to someone who won't open their eyes. All I know is, step thinking works, in everyday life and in videogames including SSBM.

It's also pretty pointless to explain scientology to someone who won't open their eyes.

That whole post is just completely inane. Especially...

How could such drivel make you look cool or like a show off? What could anyone accuse you of showing off for in that post?

Step thinking seems to go a little deep. But I think both of you are right....ish. I think the word MINDGAME is just being used as a substitute for playing smart. Playing to their disadvantages, faking them out...playing rock paper scizzors or whatever :p. What I'm trying to say is: People are taking this word to seriously. All it is supposed to mean is tricking your opponent into a better position in one way or another for yourself. Sometimes it works, sometimes they see through you, whatever. It's just a word, and it doesn't mean hocus pocus mumbo jumbo ali baba magic. It's just a word that has come to be used in substitue of one big drawn out explanation of playing smart. And it is being abused.

Because I've made statements that sound arrogant when they weren't meant to be and people just never got over it, which kinda of ruined threads [on other forums] for me because everytime I post they go "oh it's the showoff/noob again".

Plus I was just playing safe, sometimes I see what I write from more than 1 PoV so I just make sure the PoV I want to to be seen is much more evident that the other PoV.

Oh, I see, thinking ahead, preparing for possible reactions. Or should I say 'Step-Thinking'? Nah, I think I'll just call it thinking.

Lol i tried to let the topic die...but jesus this is too funny..basically all that proved is kdj ***** you fast because ....he probably had better things to get to or hes merciful... and maybe ken is sadistic or he neeeded to kill time. All you did was equate mindgames with slow play and no mindgames with fast aggressive...which is inherently stupid. In both cases the outcome was exactly the same. I need not go any further.(But Of course I will!!)

Besides when one players skill and experience is far greater than the others it doesnt really matter how fast or not they play...Case and point ..they ***** you in friendlies I doubt either was trying much the only difference was the execution. Which is not to put down your skill as a player because Im sure the same would happen to me..only difference is I would look at the whole situation differently rather than say Kdj lacks ____ I would be wondering what was I missing (which would be skill and experience).

edit: If my mother is indeed a mindgame does that make me a mindgame? Or just a son of a mindgame? Or just half mindgame?

I think people need to stop putting so much focus on mindgames. If mindgames were enough then low-tiers would win major tournies. But that doesn't happen. Why? Because the top 5 have better moves, options, and cheap tricks up thier sleeves. That's what I think the community should be focusing on more. Not some intangible concept. But real techniques that can be taught and looked at in order to guage effectiveness.

In other fighters, its all about knowing how to keep frame advantage, what options you have if your opponent blocks, what options you have on block, what attacks to abuse, etc. These are ideas that aren't really discussed that much in melee. Hell, I hardly see the word frame advantage used, but its a concept that plays a huge role in melee. No one really talks about the different little tricks they have mastered that are effective in competitive matches. The community needs to take Melee into a different direction. Honestly, lately there have been more and more people advocating smarter play over mindgames. In truth, mindgames will come over time as you gain more experience. But playing smart and abusing the cheap stuff is the fast track to getting alot better. I sense a revolution on the horizon.

You're hanging around the wrong crowd, then.

I talk with people who discuss frame advantages all the time. Average players and below generally don't talk about it because they really don't fully comprehend how it works and/or how to maximize it to its full advantage.

Eh? Followed me in here did you my friend? Well, then maybe I should start talking to Jason and Charles more when I see them. Anway, I definately think smarter play should be advocated more instead of mindgames this and mindgames that. They can't be taught, and they can only really be seen by those who are involved in the match at the time of the mindgame being used. You could watch a vid and think that you know what exactly they were trying to do in terms of mindgames, but you would never really know for sure and vids are a horrible way of showing mindgames in the first place.

I when I said i don't see many people talk about those concepts, I meant I don't see alot threads about them nor do I see hear alot of smashers talk about them in general. Meaning the smash community as a whole doesn't really talk about it. Which is a problem to me. Having the elites talk about it, is one thing, but it won't help the smash community as a whole. Hell, I would say it hurts the community. There are many tricks that the elites horded to themselves that are only recently being used by the majority of the smash community.

You won't find many of these threads in melee discussion because it's not a very easy subject to handle. Players need full understanding of the game's physics and mechanics before they can tackle specific things like frame data. You can try to post something like that, but you'll hardly get an intelligent discussion going. It's not that the elites won't share them with the other players - this information is actually found commonly.

There's a reason why frame data is only discussed at high levels - they're at the stage to be capable of doing so. It's not something you can throw at an average player - They'll just look at you with a dazed look on their face because they won't know what's going on.

You can find better luck in Character Specific rooms, and the SBR will get you the most intelligent responses to them, but general Melee Discussion won't have anything like it because the room itself appeals more to the average players who are still learning about the game.

Which is a shame. If you play a traditional fighter knowing frame data is pretty much a must at the competive level. You HAVE to know what moves give you advantage and which ones to abuse. From there you have to know what your options are. Anyway, Superdoodleman did a frame data page on the web, that is linked too in smashboards. You can find it in the all terms thread that is stickied in the melee discussion.

But I'll post the link. http://www.angelfire.com/games5/superdoodleman/frames.html

He didn't put up shield stun frame data and advantage frame data though. I'll ask him if he can finish that. I think understanding frame data is a vital part of a fighting game community.

Poor flaco. This post was absolutely beautiful. I'm gonna hug mog the next time I see him (you're going to Killer Fleet's tourny aren't you?)

This is what mog is talking about, people. All the posts in this topic that are like "lawl mindgames definitely exist blah blah blah" are just a waste of time to read.

Anyway, I won the thread many pages ago. This should probably be locked cause honestly it's not going anywhere.

So arrogant that you refuse to read the oppositions' posts? That's sad. Well now I know that I should skip yours because you obviously think this is a agreers only thread.

"I won the thread many pages ago"

Uh huh. Play rock paper scissors and tell me mindgames don't exist. Mindgames are only nonexistant to those without minds/brains to begin with [no offense but you need to see the light].
