So, there isn't a shot of Link's Boomerang yet, but judging by the fact that Link is already holding another Beetle while Marth is getting carried off by one leads me to believe it's an item, not the new Boomerang.

"a comical item" isn't enough to answer to question whether or not it's a change to Link's moveset...because Link's special moveset consists of "items". Bombs, boomerang, arrows...

That being said, I hope it's just an item, personally.

I see this as another instance of people thinking wishfully about low-tier characters getting revamped when there's no indication from Sakurai that that has been the case (see: the Phantom AT is a new move!)

Context leads me to believe it's an item. He refers to it as an item twice, one time before explaining what it does, and the fact that he doesn't mention Link's moveset at all makes me more inclined to believe it is an item.

Nice item (because it's an item). Much better new items than Brawl by the way, I remember we had like the Gooey Bomb, or that Smoke Ball... Basically only the Assist Trophies were nice additions.
I hope the Beetle is capable of grabbing other items too.

I'm inclined to believe it flies in one direction until it either carries the victim offscreen or they escape. I'm assuming it doesn't return.

Just because no other developer does his or is known for doing it does not automatically give him a free pass nor does it void anything from possibly being uninteresting and boring for anyone else. If anything, it's because hardly anyone else does this that he should do a better job of making it seem actually interesting outside of the "loldiscutemesharegetlikes" mentality that's similar to that of a site like Facebook.

In short: So he's the only one really doing something this right now. Who cares?

If people feel that something is boring, then that's what they feel. C'mon, you know how we people work. No one can please all of us. Regardless of whatever kind of group we may be in, the human race is not a hive-mind.
