Man thats disappointing, i was hoping that would be his new side b. As a link main i just want him to have some changes besides affects to already existing ones, just give me something! With what the newcomers seem to bring, i find it harder and harder to be excited by the veterans when they dont even have new designs in some cases.

Heh, nice update. I never wanted the Beetle to be a part of Link's moveset, so this is good news.

...When has the Phantom been confirmed to be an AT in the first place?
It's been all but confirmed from those Zelda pics from the UK Smash page on Facebook; her poses from a handful of those pics are almost identical to the poses she makes while performing her Brawl Specials, notably Side and Down Special.

Ironic that they're changing Link to differentiate him and Toon Link a little more. The Beetle is a great addition, though.
Well it's not like there is some kind of written rule that only the clone character can have the revamps, it can also be the default one. (Y'know Mario and his F.L.U.D.D. in order to separate him and Luigi further in terms of movesets and all).

But eh, this looks more like a regular item than an attack only Link can use, at least to me it does... :/

I wanted the Beetle as a boomerang with the ability to pick up items. Throwing a bomb and then launching the beetle out to grab it and come flying back with bomb in mandibles would be cool.

Alas, the fact that it is called an item, seems powerful, and that there are two in the picture pretty much solidifies it as an item and not a visual upgrade to the boomerang.

No it hasn't, all but confirmed would mean that we ruled out every single possibility and yet we still have some moves missing that could feasibly have the Phantom take its place. Even if we consider some of those move changes unlikely, that doesn't mean they can't happen (no one guessed FLUDD for instance). Until we're absolutely certain about it, it's not best to treat this as a certainty, particularly since Smash has a tendency to blindside us when we least expect it.

Come on guys it would be so boring and annoying as a move... Why do you want it
The boomerang or the beetle?

I prefer the boomerang as it is more iconic as a move to Link, and I'm interested to see how Sakurai and Co. attempt to fix it.

Why are you guys convinced it's a new move?

I'm pretty sure that a lot of new information revealed on Miiverse is so highly speculated on here because Sakurai is being "vague" even though he probably thinks it's obvious what he means.

"So it's a new move for Link?"
"Why would you think that? It says 'item' right there!"

Didn't Sakurai say he didn't like that people read way into everything he says.

It doesn't say it's a new item in Smash, it says it's an item in Skyward Sword. Nothing to do with it being in Smash. Until I see Link use his Boomerang in a screen shot I'm not believing it is an item.

If it's a replacement for the Boomerang, then how does it work?

And more importantly, why does Link have another one if his Beetle is still onscreen?
Link never stands holding the Boomerang. How come he's just holding on to his beetle in the same fashion as a bomb or any other item? If it functioned at all like the Boomerang, he would automatically throw it, and it would come back. But it clearly is not here.

"The Beetle item from Skyward Sword is a comical item that grabs characters and carries them in the air"

The first time he says item refers to its status in Skyward Sword, but the second time he says item refers to its role in Smash Bros. He says that the item carries characters in a comical manner, thus it has to be its role in Smash Bros. It's an item for sure. Furthermore, Link holds it like it's a regular item, if it was a move I'm fairly certain he'd have a unique animation for it.

The beetle would be a perfect move for Link: knock your opponent out of the ring then shoot them with a bug and send them flying even further away. It would even differentiate Link from Toon Link, whose forward B hasn't been shown yet either.

It's not though; it's an item.

Idk man I just know that his boomerang was replaced in Skyward Sword. And all the Smash 4 videos you see Link use like 1 bomb and the rest of his projectiles are arrows. Why are they purposely not showing off the boomerang???

"All the Smash 4 videos?" There's been, probably like 15 seconds of Link footage released, showing off the Boomerang isn't really a priority.

There's a part where he uses like 5 arrows in a row. I just wanna see the boomerang, I mean I guess the other reason they wouldn't show it off is because it's not going to be Twlight Princess version and have a new effect.

If it was a move he'd say what input it uses. That's what he's done for Villager and Rosalina.

I honestly don't see what's wrong with changing up the movesets. We don't want the same game over and over do we??

Before this new pic-o-the-day, I was actually hoping the beetle was going to be Link's new side special, in one form or another. But, alas, it seems to indicate its an item, not a part of a moveset. If you want to get picky you COULD argue it might still be both, like Samus's screw-attack up-special and the screw-attack item from Brawl. But I doubt it now.

I agree that the boomerang is more iconic, but there are lots of characters with random-as-hell movesets taken from obscure places in their past. Sometimes that's what makes Smash Bros so colorful. But, seeing how dynamic the new characters are, it does sort of cast a shadow over the classic Smash Bros cast. A new move or mechanic would seriously breathe new life into a Smash original like Link. So, I wouldn't say no to a new side-special... but what they should REALLY do is make Link's sword shoot a weak beam when he uses his standard attacks, but only when he has 0% damage, as an homage to the classic Zelda games. That would be a new mechanic that would make Link stand out again.

Beetle item confirmed before Beedle? I mean, his shop is right there, couldn't he just pop his head out? Clearly Beedle is more iconic to the franchise, having appeared in 4 more games! Jeeze, Sakurai, get your priorities straight, this is unbelievable! D:<

This could be an interesting item, though - I imagine I will get a good laugh as I carry my friends off to their doom :awesome: Assuming that's how it works, anyways.

People, there are two of the Beetle in the screenshot and only one Link. If that's not proof for your thick skulls that the beetle is an item, nothing will.
