For some reason, now I feel kinda happy brawl wasn't released at europe yet. We still have ros5 at summer. ^_^ One thing I don't wanna give up is melee, with or without brawl in the mix. I do like my double jump with peach and crouch cancel and comboes, thank you very much. I like to combo people more than camp the heck out of them or chuck random items like turtles at them. <_<

i dont understand why both games cant be played. in SF community we have street fighter 2 super turbo STILL being played while we have 3rd strike and even street fighter 4 on the way. both 3rd strike and super turbo are completely different games. some plz tell me why both games cannot co-exist in tournaments.

^ Cause new games like to overshadow old games with prettier graphics and new stuff and better availability etc. ect.

<_< I'll prolly be playing both if we get brawl here, but I shall play melee regardless.

running both melee and brawl with singles and doubles for both would take a ridiculous amount of time.

other fighting games don't have to worry about the teams aspect and the average time to finish a match is much shorter than melee. i have seen sets in melee that have taken over 22mins to finish all three matches.

if a rule set was developed to shorten the length of time for tournies then it would be very possible, but i doubt that would happen for either game

melee and brawl may end up co-existing, but i think they will need separate tournies

I will attend and support any NE melee tournies. Melee is the ****. I will also attended brawl tournies, but only because it's an easy way to get money by mashing the b button.

BTW, Eggm, can I borrow your time machine? I want to check out the review scores for some games, who wins the console war, and what the next smash (if there is one) is called. You've obviously been to the future, so it shouldn't be a problem for me to borrow it for 10 minutes, right?

I've played brawl plenty. Brawl's pretty fun.

However, last night, something terrible happened.

Brawl got mother****ing boring.

Every game is close. You can play with whoever you want- but if neither of you is a ****ing idiot, then the games are close. And unfortunately, about 7 of the games I played last night (granted out of a lot of games) ended with either me or my opponent tripping, and a punishment finishing off the poor, poor soul.

Sakurai ***** the **** out of this game. Tripping? Really? I mean, even setting that aside, the game's really not THAT deep. At least not yet. And I really don't see it getting much further.

On that note, is anyone going to join me in the continuation of melee? I don't think we're done yet.

My only evidence-

CS:1.6 vs. CS:CZ, CS:S- Counter-Strike 1.6 was revolutionary in its appeal to gamers. It's been a tournament game for years, and even after multiple sequels, still remains the most commonly organized game for tournaments. You know why? The communities were honest with what they wanted. They wanted deep, fair competition. When CS:CZ came out, everybody realized, hey, this game blows. Why would I play this? 1.6 is more skillful.

We don't need to go into CS:S.

Now, of course, tying that into the smash community's current problem, Brawl or Melee, Brawl would be the ****ty newcomer, and Melee would be the capable veteran. Why would be play Brawl, when we have a better game already to play?

My question to you, fellow member of the smash community, is..

Do you want to continue the chronicles of Melee? Will you host and attend future large and small tournaments?

Discuss.
Same thing happened after huge johnz 3, all the old melee players got together and had a side tourny lol.

yeah but you might use it to go into the past to steal it from him, going back into the future and rewrote history on Eggm never having the time machine in the first place, placing you in complete control of the space-time continuoum.....

I don't feel like reading all the posts (after the 1st one), but I'll give my 2 cents:

1. It's a bit early for you to be saying Melee > Brawl, you should probably wait for a solid meta-game to develop before you jump to conclusions.

2. As long as there are people who enjoy melee and will put down money on their games, the Melee Tourney scene will not die. It's all about the demand for the tourneys for each respective game. It's not a matter of which game is deeper or newer or better or faster, but a matter of what the community wants. And I think there are plenty of people who still like melee enough for that scene to continue with Brawl.

Regardless of how Brawl progresses compared to Melee, I think it's important for us to realize something:

Our community is large enough to support both.

Even if Melee takes a back seat to Brawl, there is no reason to abandon it completely. As so many of the Brawl supporters are fond of saying, "It's not Melee 2.0" Exactly. The games are completely different. Brawl is not a logical extension of Melee, a superior sequel to replace its predecessors. Rather, it is a completely different game with a different engine and different gameplay. It's only because it has "Smash" in the title that we have such a novelty bias.

There's plenty of precedent for communities not adopting new games, as the OP has pointed out. There's also precedent for communities adopting new games, but not abandoning the older ones. There are still Halo CE and Halo 2 tournaments, for instance, despite the existence of Halo 3.

I don't like Brawl. It has none of the elements that attracted me to Melee. Competitive or not, I'm not obliged to play every game just because it's competitive. Nor am I obliged to play a game just because it has the word "Smash" in the title. I think Melee is a better game, and whether or not people agree with me, it's premature to abandon such a well-established game completely, and I sincerely doubt that such a thing will happen.
