All right after pound 4 i thought ot myself why cant we have brawl/Melee tournies around this area ?? i mean if TOs could pull it off then we can make this happen heck i'll even help out if its possible ..

i asked K-9 if he could host brawl/melee at the woodbridge venue and he said yea its a possibility

Now if i could get peeps like Bolt,C3 (g-reg), and Deezs Venue and Tant helping out to host melee wiht brawl we could get alot more attendence :D

so im hoping that most people read this and can think of way both melee and brawl could happen in Md/Va

remember, chu tried having brawl and melee at his house, with like 30-40 people in there and lack of time, it didnt go so well. he had to make it like friday melee and saturday brawl.

This is a good idea, that way maybe more of the brawl people will be interested in melee, and maybe more melee players might find interest in brawl. Although the only issue with that is MD/VA is notorious for not even finshing 2 events during the day, let alone 4. But if g-reg, tant, bolt, k-9, etc really focus on consuming time and people bring setups, it can be done.

We need many set ups to get it done and that likely won't ever be the case in this region.

thats why chu has his on friday but im talking about the other venues that just host brawl if they could make melee there too it would help this region so much :O

I think we should 50/50 split our focus on brawl/melee

Right now this region hasn't ever proven that it can run melee and brawl on the same day at all ever, and the two communities clash anyways.

I think we should start alternating brawl and melee weeks, not hosting events on the same day, but a melee event one week, brawl the next. This way the communities might meld a little bit if they want a tourney experience but its a melee week.

I talked with a lot of the Melee guys; I know all of them would be down for it.

I also think alternating weekends would be perfect. Brawl/Melee/Brawl/Melee monthly tournaments.

The thing is that the attendance for an all Melee tournament for MD/VA would be huge so it would be worth it.

We should definitely do it. More Melee players should step up and give their input on this.

one or the other, i'll never run both at the same time again.

pound 4 was amazing. pound 4 would've been even MORE amazing if it was only brawl, or only melee.

they are on different consoles (although melee can be played on wii), and just that fact alone splits the number of setups approximately in half. Also, brawl is a much slower game, requires more setups and more time. Not to mention, there are problems with having to play both games in tourney while they go on simultaneously (which holds things up).

This isn't a SF/tekken/virtuafighter/3rd strike tourney, where the same 24 or so dudes compete in some games and the biggest turnout is like 8 per game. BIG melee tourneys need lots of TVs, and brawl tourneys after a certain size need even more. I'm still a little surprised pound 4 went so smoothly, although brawl DID end at like 11:30 at night or something on the last day, and i thought pools were run reasonably fast.

I KNOW melee players didn't like having to give up half of the setups to brawl, and i KNOW brawl players didn't like the fact that there were still a lot of melee setups with not a lot of tourney left, which could've been used for brawl. I play both games and I didn't like any of it! I'm not trying to split our communities or anything, tourneys are just a big long pain with both (unless it's pound, which was more like a big long fun pain)

I'm all for this. I want to get into Melee after talking to Amsah.

Here's key factors into running this kind of tourney:

1. Bring setups.
2. Come on time.
3. Run the tourney smoothely.

This idea is awesome because I believe this could unite the region.

And that's cool. <3

yea i want more input on this from other TOs that host because it would be awesome to have melee tournies again

and running them at the same time i know its hard but if Venue allowed it would any of the TOs be up for it :O

I definitely don't think Melee and Brawl should be in the same venue. I don't want to split the communities or anything but its really inefficient and it leaves everyone disappointed.

However, we need to find a way to get a more consistent tournament scene again. A smashfest at someones house every weekend + monthly events for each game would be great. I know that is ambitious/improbable but I am a dreamer. I hope this thread creates a good solution. :)

I'll raise you on your proposal:

College Park can be used as a venue spot. Decent size to run both Melee and Brawl. Closer to the center of MD/VA (better than Baltimore and better than Fredericksburg.)

Can be done in a day given enough set-ups are brought. Otherwise, can span over two days, both games going on at the same time so at least the communities can communicate with each other. I don't know any of the MD/VA melee players other than of course the reputable ones. Or, if necessary, then I suppose different games on different days. We can make it a monthly or bi-monthly tournament, depending on how often I can rent out a big enough room.

MD/VA TOs, discuss?

EDIT: It's not inefficient IMO. Pound 4 is a good example. Other than Friday being all Melee, we had decent set-ups for both games both days with friendlies going on ALL THE TIME. Of course, there were more set-ups, but you don't honestly expect turnout to exceed 100 for this. So 8 set-ups per game is fine. The communities will be responsible for bringing their respective set-ups. Perhaps if it attracts OoS attention, then more set-ups can be provided by VGBootcamp or Plank.

i think melee/brawl could work on the same day, but it would def require the region to step it up as far as bringing set-ups

i cant really think of any local attempts at doing both melee and brawl besides at chu's (which is really limited in terms of space/set-ups). Chu has pretty much been the only one hosting melee events consistently but they're on fridays which isn't always easy making it out to. now that melee interest has stepped up i think this should be tried again or at least we should alternate weekends definitely.... there really should not be any more of these weekends split between separate events dedicated to just one of the games.

If I were to attempt to throw a melee/brawl tourney I could clean out two of the upstairs bedrooms and put more set ups in there. Probably melee up stairs and brawl downstairs. I don't have any experience in running both events simultaneously but I think it could work as long as people provided adequate set-ups/showed up on time. I already have about five CRT's at the venue which would almost be enough for brawl alone. If several more set-ups were brought for melee it should be possible. It would be great if GIMR and Aposl would be able to lend a hand.

The alternate is that I can just run melee one week and brawl the next.

If an event were to be organized hopefully the melee players would show some interest. That's the only thing I'm really worried about.

I have tried Melee twice and both times the results have been less than stellar. I am all for hosting a game as long as there is participation. I have seen a lot of interest, but not much participation. Herf and I always setup at least one or two melee setups at our events. If I remember correctly we have 5 melee setups. For those that have come to our tournaments, setups have certainly not been an issue. The Brawl+ group had 2 TVs the whole time during our last tournament.

I may do a Melee only event, but we will have to see how that goes.

I can bring 3 TVs, a cube, and a Wii to any tourney where I'm allowed to hold Brawl+ on the side.

Holding 4 tounaments in one day already seems to be a big hassle. Running 5-6 events would be a nightmare XD.

That being said, I'd pitch in my own GC and Wii under the same conditions.

x.x Is that your only problem with the idea? Because I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be the case if I hosted one.

Prolly just gonna do seperate weeks anyway if I do.

Metalmonstar-if you want to do a serious melee event, let me/chinesahh/plank know. You can get a lot of players if we make the rules and advertise it for you.

Im def not down for running brawl/melee at the same venue or same time..
I think the community will be better off with alternating weeks for brawl & melee though..
think about it if we have brawl 2 times a month instead of every week.. more attendance, save money for people that cant go every week, reunite the melee community in MD/VA, etc...

Not everyone plays melee AND brawl.
Actually. Most smashers do not play both.
So you'll have a lot of smashers looking around at the brawl or melee setups and wishing they were their preferred game.

To be fair, that's why I offered College Park. Bigger Melee scene there, not to mention definitely a bigger venue than Chu's basement. Chred can help me with venue and organizing set-ups for both games. And again, how is having 4 tournaments on 16 set-ups, 8 for each game, any different than having 2 tournaments on 8 set-ups for one game?

And again, if this is organized, it can rise above 8 set-ups per game. Any issues? Other than of course asking the MD/VA smash community to step up and provide the consoles/tvs.

if a TO stepped it up and ran Melee bi-weeklies (ONLY MELEE) the md/va melee scene can be revived because people WILL come. the problem is that there aren't any unless it's Chus and melee players dont want to deal with brawl taking up time and space.

melee every other 2 weeks
brawl every other 2 weeks
smashfest/practice sessions in between

someone get on this

@Laijin - The point wasn't to get people to play both games lol.

@Omni - All the TO's needa get a schedule going. We have too many hosts :s Everyone just seems to try and grab the next available weekend and it just saturates events.
