Am I the only one in MD/VA that was actually quite unimpressed with Brawl? Everyone around me seems to enjoy it, but I'm very disappointed with it. I'm sure it will get more and more complex as time goes by, but as of now, I want nothing more than to keep playing melee. I do understand though that for some people melee is worn out, since they've been playing it for like 5 years. Anyway....So yea...
Share your opinions on the game with me. ^_^

I'm not from md/va, but I share the same feelings towards the game. Along with a lot of nj/pa/ny smashers. Everyone who still loves melee should come to Scar's tournament on the 22nd a lot of people around here are going.

Hmmm, that's a big far for me to travel, but it might almost be worth it. I wouldn't mind a good melee tournament. Btw, I <3 you Eggm and I need to play you more.

Meh, in order for the game to get more complex as time goes by we need to get behind the game and play it. We won't advance the game if we stick to melee. I think there's plenty of stuff in the game to work with, from the buffer system to the new shield. A number of cool things have been discovered already, from squirtle's "superwavedash" to snake's "snakedash" and the removing of lag of sonic's or zss's dair with the buffer system, so I don't think we can give up brawl this early in the game.

I have every intention of continuing to play it and give it a chance. I'd be the last person to just say "**** this game" and quit playing.
I'm just curious to hear what people think of it and whether or not I am the only one in MD/VA that still wants to see Melee tournaments happening.

Yeah, I still play both. I just prefer melee right now. Yeah you should carpool with 5 people, i've come down to VA/md like 8 times in the past 4 months. I know like some pittsburg is planning to come and i'm bringing like 4 from NY. It should be sweet. Be real cool if some md/va came.

I really can't say anything about the game yet seeing as i don't have a Wii. I'm still gonna play Melee from time to time after I get a Wii since I have some unfinished business with a few people.

Haha, I assumed you were, but the "want nothing more than to keep playing melee" line mad me sad. : / So I couldn't resist saying something in support of brawl.

@ chibo:

here's the thread on squirtle's shenanigans: http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=148902

and this is the smashwiki entry on snakedashing, with a video near the bottom of the page:
http://super-smash-bros.wikia.com/wiki/Snakedashing

It's those kinds of things that make me want to play brawl more. One time I immediately neutral b'd with ivysaur out of a downsmash clearly before the lag of the move was over, but haven't replicated it since. It's going to be really exciting to see what else comes up and what will end up winning people tournaments.

i absolutely love brawl.

and i love it because it IS different than melee.

its also quite refreshing and, unlike in melee, i beat people. i mean, me and ck took eggm and catus to the last stock. we're clearly amazing. AND we beat chu and traivs. Im proud. get at me.

Im sticking with brawl. for now...**** melee

nice sig isra. man i haven't played team richmond since you guys were babies.

I just messed around with the squirtle thing and oh wow it's like squirtle has a wavedash. It's incredibly fun and looks pretty useful, though i have no one but the computer to play with atm.

Haha, thanks for the compliment. I like some of the earlier iterations of it better, but all kinds of character choices kept changing. I want to change mine from ike to pokemon trainer, but I haven't really found a suitable picture yet, and it's not like I could draw it myself lol. My ike is better than my pt anyways. >_< But yes! We should play brawl at some C3. Last I remember playing you was at some C3 in pools forever ago; I recall pulling a lot of stitchfaces. : D

brawl is pretty much amazing. i have been up late every night since the US release playing my brains out.

i'm actually starting to like the fact that the technical aspect got stripped down, so now you can focus more on just destroying your opponent than button combinations.

i'm not saying brawl is going to be a legit tourney game and i'm not even going to compare it to melee. brawl is just a ridiculously fun game just like every other smash before it

i've been playing melee since it's release and it is an amazing game, but i have a new game to play now

I prefer brawl over melee. This game just reminds me of what 64 smash is minus the 0-death combos, which was something i loved when i started playing smash initially and al agree there is a lotta learning still in this game were just all in the melee mindset when we play this game now.

I agree with hova on how I like that the technical aspect got stripped down. I must be the only one that thinks camping in melee was easier than brawl. You just had so many options to camp (dashdancing, wavedashing back, wavedashing outta shield, etc).

i actually find brawl pretty boring, tbh...

i was unimpressed, but i only played singles offline. i don't actually have the game. me and my friends are definitely going to play brawl, but its going to be more of a fun thing, like ssb64 is to us, more than a competitive attitude that melee provides to us.

also, don't take that last part as melee being not fun, haha. we only take games to the next level if we have major fun while playing them. =P

I think it's silly to compare Brawl with Melee.

This is how I see it. Brawl is a new fighting video game. I want to be good at it. It will be done. That's how I feel competition wise. I also believe it has just as much potential as Melee did. People are forgetting this time around when Melee was out, people thought Marth's dash attack to forward smash combo was amazing. The metagame has only began to start and saying this game isn't as good as Melee is like a person expecting to be great at Brawl because they're good at Melee.

Brawl will continue to grow and develop. Technical skills will be created. Advance moves will be found. Mindgames will continuously play a part. I could understand people not liking this game if it were a button mashing game where anyone could win, but it's not.

In my opinion, the majority of the people who don't like this game are the ones that learn how to play videogames at a slower pace, or don't quite pick up new games fast. In that case, it's easy to lean back on Melee.

Well I wasn't great at Melee to begin with so it's difficult for me to say. Fundamentally the game seems the same, but the effort to acheive it is much harder right now from what I see. With most of ATs gone, camping and defensive play is taking centerstage right now.

However there is talk about a possible l-cancel floating around. Apparently it's not as great as SHFFling, but if it is indeed true then.....things will change.

as a side note... I was definitely skeptical about brawl the first few times i played. it wasn't until i got my own copy and had a chance to just play around on my own that I was hooked

it's definitely a weird feeling going from melee to brawl, but i had the exact same feeling transferring to melee from 64

even tho every character has similar physics, they all play completely different and you really have to spend a good deal of time with the game to appreciate brawl for what it is and get out of the melee mindset

i also love that all the smashers who were just copying the play styles of people before them are going to get completely exposed. but fear not, TA will figure out the game and then the scrubs can join in

im still reserving my judgement on brawl. i play sometimes and find myself enjoying it. then theres the other times. level 9 fox is behind the other times. seriously wtf am i supposed to do when he goes into pissed off mode and counters my every hit with a better one? theres no button on my controller to stop it.

aside from him and mk im just kinda playin around on it, im desperately waiting for that 1 tech thats gonna actually give me some approach options. til then its whatever, anybody lookin to swap FCs feel free to btw. i need some matches with the mdDCva vets sometime.

Lulz @ saying it's easier to camp in melee than it is in Brawl. If someone wants to camp you, you're going to get camped. Good players camp other good players in almost every fighting game. I'll be ****ed if you don't see high level 3s players turtle and poke, turtle and poke, so forth. My biggest issue with brawl is the lack of dash dancing, actually. I just hate the movement in it. Omni makes a valid point when he says that it's a totally new game and doesn't need to get compared to melee, but (atleast for me) the point of this was to see who preferred melee. I'm not saying one is "better" than the other.
Anyway, I still am playing brawl and trying to find some joy in it, but I don't even have fun playing friendlies with anyone in it. It's just feels soooo laaaame right now. x_x
I can't wait to see the new advanced **** that gets discovered though.
Gonna be rpetty shweet.

I mean, if we think about it...

A lot of us came into the Melee scene after a lot of the advance techniques were discovered.

This is completely different. We're all now in the process of the creation and discovery of these techniques. It creates a whole new viewpoint. With Melee, we could watch matches, study techs, practice, and see progress. Brawl is just a whole another concept for most of us, and I think most people who aren't use to it are just uncomfortable with the adjustment.

Except for me who was with melee since 01......yes finally after 7 years another smash game is out! Seriously, its time to move on lol.

Just like Street Fighter 4 coming out later this year, can't leave a good series in the past. That being said I'm looking for some online challengers so get those FCs

I love Brawl. Although I think teams is now boring as ****. Singles is so much better though.

I can't figure out if it's easier to camp in Melee or Brawl. In Melee, it was easier to grab and there were less options out of shield. But with wavedashing, it definitely gave you a lot more options. The shield goes down a lot faster in Brawl (Shield Breaker ***** btw) and you get knocked away so it's harder to counter attack. I thought it was easier to camp in Brawl, but now that I think about it, I camped with MARTH a lot more in Melee than I can with Marth or Ike in Brawl.

I love how the technical aspect got toned down. I always liked thinking about what I did more than pressing the buttons. My reaction time is ****. That seems a bit conceited though and just shows they did remove one aspect of skill.

Also, <3 Ike. I think he's complete **** as a character, but he's so fun to play as. Until people get good at this game, I'll still be able to use Ike.

I have zero interest in returning to Melee right now.

no one in md/va should be waiting to see what techniques are developed; everyone should be going out and trying to breakdown every aspect of the game

i was playing with omni for a couple of hours and it was pretty obvious that we were understanding the game more and more. with new strategies and approaches and different defensive tactics and edgeguarding

part of the reason i'm loving brawl is because figuring everything out is exciting to me. i have already gotten past my melee mindset and i hope everyone in md/va does too because we need to continue to dominate as a region

also who said teams in brawl was boring? come play me and egybill for an hour and see how much fun you have

-ciao is a stupid ***** sign off

Would love to. I'm gonna try to get to the C3 this weekend. Hope to see everyone there.

And CK, go into your User CP and Edit Profile. It's where you put in your Brawl FC too.

I am happy to say that my G&W in Brawl is even gayer than my Jigglypuff in Melee, and frankly, I didn't think that was possible.

Wow, I love this game. Looking forward to attending tournaments regularly again.

Unfortunately I haven't gotten a chance to play with humans yet. So I probably don't have a valid opinion till I do. But the game seems pretty fun regardless.

wow, hova and omni are hitting the nail on the head. all you suckers need to step it up and get good at brawl before you make any brash comments about it. "waiting to see techniques develop" is such a noob mindset, you gotta figure it out on your own. you can all be pioneers, the new H2YL of brawl. innovators, renaissances men, legends

wayyy too lazy to read all the posts.

Throughout melee, I considered myself a technical player. Although currently brawl is far less technical than melee, I am in love. It's brand new. There are more characters and different levels. It's also EXTREMELY popular. Everyone plays. Everyone has a clean slate, and anyone could be good now. And the most important thing is, is that it's fun as ****.

EDIT: everyone come to my tournament

I love brawl and penguins and hammers.
And infinite cgs.

My favorite part is finding out new stuff. I just found out something today where you can dd like in melee with certain characters that have low lag on their pivot animations. And you can cancel that pivot with any move, including another dash.

One of the things I enjoy most about brawl is seeing who is actually legitimately good at the core of smash... predicting and mindgames.

When I was playing melee, I played Falco, Marth, and Luigi. For each of them, I knew how combos worked. I knew that as Falco, I could shine and instantly B-air them before they even flew up from the shine. I knew I could shffl f-airs as Marth all the way to the edge, and then spike 'em. I knew tons of combos as Luigi for every matchup.

My point is, that melee seemed to get to the point where all the mindgames were in the approach. Once you had the opponent, you were going to rack up some decent damage unless you screwed up, no matter how they DIed. Nothing wrong with that--it's part of melee's charm. But it's really nice going to a game that--I feel--is currently completely about prediction and being a step ahead. With the new crazy DI, there are very few guaranteed combos.

In the end, melee was getting dull. The "fox only, no items, final d" mindset seemed to be sinking in. I'd find myself outplaying someone an entire match, only to be waveshined or some other crazy 0-death combo. Brawl's a new game, and the strategy is different... approaches are now much less significant, at least with the crazy hitstun recovery. I mean, approaching into a charged Ike Fsmash isn't a good idea, but few characters can really punish an approach. The game seems to be more about outsmarting the other person rather than playing faster.

Brawl's okay.

I actually do think we can compare this game to melee, though, considering it's part of the same god**** franchise and has a lot of things in it that are absolutely identical to melee. The game has definitely, at least so far, been dumbed down from melee. And honestly, that's probably a good thing. I remember going to tournaments (and rofl, actually it still happens) and getting ***** by people with tech skill.

Without tech skill, this is more or less a game of spacing and mindgames, right? That's awesome.

Come bring brawl to my house and play me.
