I don't get it, they seem the same, tiny differences

Witch ones more challenging?
You definitely need to play Melee dude. It seems similar from the surface, but Melee is a solid game. No offense at all to the Brawl+ people, I know they work hard and have pure intentions (at least when they started), but they aren't video game programmers. They're trying to fix EVERYthing but that in itself is an unattainable goal. For everything that they try to "fix", they create ten new problems that they need to remedy.

When creating a game sometimes you need to keep cooldown on attacks or give characters bad recoveries. Sometimes that unwinnable match-up is necessary despite how ******** it is. Sometimes generally useless attacks are needed to keep the game structured.

Games NEED bad characters. If you try to make all of them good by giving them ALL good recoveries and a full roster of great attacks while indiscriminately nerfing other aspects of characters that people think are too good in Brawl...you come up with irreparable issues.

Sure, taking out things like tripping and auto-snapping have minimal repercussions on the game as a whole, but when they began to add hitstun, change attacks, add and take out character details almost at random, it got messy. To do what they'd want to do, they'd need to start from scratch and develop patches. That way, when they'd change something in the game, there'd be a legitimate reason.

The bolded is the reason why I hate melee, and is starting to have a severe dislike for Brawl in general. A game where only four characters matter (Marth, Fox, Falco, Shiek in Melee. Metaknight, Snake, Diddy, and Falco in Brawl) is a game with many problems, and instead of dealing with those problems directly we see people arguing about whether Final Destination should be a counterpick stage, and that's just sad. Brawl isn't even thrilling to watch, it's flatout boring and repetitive. Melee isn't even that much better, it's just more fun to watch since camping is less of an effective tactic.
Every competitive game has top tier characters that ALWAYS win. That's just how it works. MvC2 is MUCH worse in this respect than Melee is, as are hundreds of other good competitive games. 3S, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Tekken, SF4, you name it. Some characters are simply created better than others.

The fun in it is taking a character you like and pushing them as far as they can possibly go. If you want to WIN, choose a top tier and compete with the other players that use top tier for 1st place. If you simply want to rep your character, then do that. You can't expect everyone to have a fair chance though, not unless the roster has only 1 character.

So all characters in Melee actaully had a chance to win against top tiers but characters in brawl didn't have that much of a chance.

The makers must've thought the High tier characters in Melee had to much so they try'd to even things up but ended up making Mario have a huge fall to a low tier and same with Falcon and Fox and other used to be high tier characters.

Unless you make a game with 3 characters like Starcraft, then it might work out :p.
I was actually thinking about that when I posted. Starcraft is probably the most balanced competitive game out there, but it didn't start that way. It's been out for more than a decade and is constantly patched by the creators of the game...and STILL isn't completely balanced.

@Mars16: Not all of the Melee characters had a chance vs Top Tiers. Most low/bottom tiers can't. There might be some, but a majority no. It goes with all fighting games.

I doubt if Sakurai knew anything about competitive Melee, and tried to 'even' tiers in Brawl, and since he wanted Brawl to be uncompetitive, well...

@Matador: Yea, I thought Starcraft would be a pretty good example of balance. I think 3 is common for balance because you can give 'buffs' to those rock paper and scissors, and eventually even it out, and it kind of reminds me of rock, paper, scissors. However when you add more characters to counter those rock, paper, scissors you get an unbalanced game.

At least that's the way I look at it xD.

Speaking of Starcraft I remember Hero saying he had that game...:O. We should play sometime, lol.

I've been playing it a ton lately. You'd wreck me though, I don't play battle-net, just with friends vs CPU for fun.

SC2 I may get into competitively, but for now, I only watch competitive matches in awe not knowing wtf they're doing.

Wishing Apex 2012 happened again.
Round 1 Pools

Lost 2-0 to Shadow. Mario vs MK/Wario.
Lost to GIMR 2-1. Link vs Ice Climbers.
Won against D0N. 2-0 Link vs Donkey Kong.
Won against King Yoshi. 2-0 Mario vs Pikachu.
Won against Smerfin. 2-0 Pit vs Meta Knight.

Round 2 Pools
Won vs Dapuffster. 2-1 Mario vs Diddy/Jigglypuff
Lost against Ally. 2-0 Mario/Pit vs Meta Knight.
Lost against dmbrandon. 2-0 Mario/Link vs Meta Knight.
Lost against Lou. 2-1 Mario vs Game&Watch
Lost against Poltergust. 2-1 Mario/Pit vs Yoshi.

I ****ed up Round 2 of Pools. I should have beaten both Polter and Lou. I lost to Polter thanks to an input error, cape stalling over an obvious Fsmash but it instead fireball'd and I fell into it and died. Good Yoshi, but I really had no reason to lose that.

I destroyed Lou Game 1 on Battlefield, 2 stocking him, then lost a very close game on Rainbow and just lost it Game 3 because when it comes down to it, he was just a mediocre GnW doing GnW things.

I could of made it into Brackets as a 3rd Seed, but I again lose to this game. xD Oh well, next time for sure.

I beat Cheese 3-2 in a $10 MM. Mario/Link vs Ice Climbers.
I beat KawaiiPoyo in a $5 MM. Link vs Kirby/Meta Knight.
first pools, DAM WTF, i swear l was thinking behind livestream that wtf dan how u lose to dapuffster loool but dayums thought u'd win ease against polt and lou, next time ill be with u in ur matchs to ease the amount of rage/gayness :/

also LMFAO @ cheese taking his cash, good ****ING **** please tell me u got that **** recorded LMAO. and good **** too against poyoo, is he like those 12 year old kids ? just wonderin

winter game fest had only 8 brawl setups so pools were out of 2 LOL

1-1 with zex
2-0 pitbull
2-0 random mk
0-2 firece (zss)
0-2 with some sonic

and 2 other people who i forget

i got 3rd seed below that zss and zex

i went 2-2 in brackets beating a peach player and ice clmbers and losing to a DDD and a diddy

not that i matter =[ good stuff kirin
good stuff vato, heard winterfest was ******** that brawl dubz couldnt happen lol mad gey.

Good stuff Vato...Sorry for not replying to your post...

Haha, you did better in 2nd round pools than I did Kirin...After losing enough matches to not get into brackets, I didn't really try anymore...I refuse to pick up another character to counter just MK

Still had fun though so I'm not too mad about it...
famous ur ****ing hardhead to take on a league of MKs most Marios like myself would probably give up after one round of MKs since it's so mentally stressing to fight one, still good **** my dude!

G&W is a stupid character who does stupid things. Losing to one is frustrating, especially as Mario where your options are super limited. I can understand feeling that way. Besides, it's not like Kirin threw his controller at the screen and murdered Lou's dog scruffy after the match.

Melee > Brawl+. If you want to play Melee, then don't settle for the knock-off, they're not the same. For one, Melee is significantly better and well put together. If you're willing to put the time in for it, you'll definitely see what I mean.

Not "bashing" Brawl+ either, just telling it how it is.
agree so hard with this post. Gaw is dumb and gay and needs to die.

and melee is something godly lol. srsly been playing that game 5-10 mins tech skill and went to play friendlies at friends house, when u play melee for 7 hrs straight then play brawl right after, ur brawl game is 1000x better lol just gotta lrn2keep a balance

matador did u even go to pound4?

Melee >>>>>>> Brawl +

But uh, Brawl - FTW
agreed except brawl is gay lol

Starcraft competitively, l saw it first hand in animefest in NY here, it's pretty ridicious.

also, boss lost seibrik by getting time'd out according to famous's post in p4 results thread lol i'd give up life.

i read the 38 pgs of results thread in p4, sad to say that **** is discouraging to read lol. i'm definitely picking up Melee again (Bo x7 even perfected his tech skill in melee according to aim ^_^) hopefully here in NY/NJ melee becomes more active.

Nah, I didn't go. Originally, I was going to, but it was too expensive, so I figured I'd at least go to spectate and finally meet Famous and Kirin and the rest of the Marios there (and to support my crew/play friendlies/do MMs/all that good stuff) but I had family stuff come up. I didn't even get to watch the stream. The only match that I actually caught was M2K vs Armada...it was so amazing.

So yeah...john john john on my end.

Taking out Tripping has reprecussions? >.>

Seriously though, I get your point.

Yeah I remember MvC2's top tier characters. I can see how it's worse than Melee too.

The bolded is the reason why I play Brawl in the first place. Though, I don't think I need to explain myself on that (at the risk of sounding arrogant), with the guides, metagame analysis, and match-up index. If I believe Mario's metagame truely has peaked, that's when I'll stop playing. It's also the same reason why I don't go back to melee minus friendlies.

Unless you make a game with 3 characters like Starcraft, then it might work out :p.
Starcraft had countless patches actually. If it was kept like it was originally, then Zerg would be the best race in the game since they vastly rush everything regardless. The patches made the Zerg build more slowly and slightly buffed the Terrans/Protoss' build rate. I also think they increased the cost for Zerg too.

Point is though, that Starcraft is as balanced as it is due to patches, which is something that could be really useful for Brawl.

So all characters in Melee actaully had a chance to win against top tiers but characters in brawl didn't have that much of a chance.
I wouldn't say all characters, but generally it's true. Melee Mario's metagame is nowhere near finished either, and neither is Brawl Mario's.

The makers must've thought the High tier characters in Melee had to much so they try'd to even things up but ended up making Mario have a huge fall to a low tier and same with Falcon and Fox and other used to be high tier characters.
No, the developers were never thinking about competitive play, just making characters cool.

EDIT:

Speaking of Starcraft I remember Hero saying he had that game...:O. We should play sometime, lol.
That is true, though I suck. I'm far too conversative and not aggressive enough with my manpowering. I actually have to watch more competitive videos to see what they do.

Same with me for the most part, it's why I play any game competitively. If I wanted to play to be the very best, I'd play MK/Sagat/Rachel/Chun Li, but I play who I like and find fun in pushing them as far as possible, especially when I see a ton of untapped potential.

Mario is brimming with potential and I'm embarrassed everytime I play him and lose because I feel like I could've prevented it.

Point is though, that Starcraft is as balanced as it is due to patches, which is something that could be really useful for Brawl.
Very true, as long as they fix everything appropriately and make the most minimal of changes possible, Brawl can definitely benefit from a few tweaks here and there. I just personally believe that Brawl+ guys are going about it the wrong way.

I've been wrong before though.

Edit: Hell...does anybody want to play me in SC? I wouldn't mind getting my *** handed to me a few dozen times XD

Speaking of potential, I'll restate again that everyone should look into Cape Jump. I already stated it's legit against Snake's F-tilt and punishes Metaknight's Tornado.

@Matador: Wait till SC2, then ask again. I'm pretty much waiting for that.

he was luigi, if it matters here....

He basically walked into your attack since it was pointless for him just to stand there with 10 secs left...So yea, close game

Since infinites are allowed, why don't they let them go to 999%. That way Dedede has an even better match-up and we don't risk him losing? Because I find that allowing him to infinite us at 300% still might give us a chance to come back.

I mean they don't want to hurt Dedede's match-up soo...

:urg: I hate infinites, I might sound like a scrub but whatever >_<.

300% is enough since we would die from almost anything he does at that percentage...Yea, infinites are gay but what can we do? Nobody will understand this until they see it from our POV....which will probably never happen...

I don't think they will see our point of view either...I have yet to be infinited in a tournament myself, but...

I'm curious in other competitive games, if said character has infinites did they ban them, or still keep them legal?

I think the whole infinite thing is on what characters they work on. Link and Samus are terrible, Bowser is bad, Mario is average, and Luigi and DK are pretty good, but not amazing. If Dedede had an infinite on MK, Falco, or Snake it would be banned as soon as it was figured out. If not, everybody would have a pocket D3. I agree that infinites are gay, but I don't think much of them because I believe they are banned where I am.

As to IC's, very few people can consistently do the infinite. I can think of Meep and Lain and I'm just assuming that because they are the best IC's. Also, it would was banned, there would be no reason for IC's would drop tremendously.

Samus I believe is a fundamentally decent character, not quite as good as Mario, but solid enough to be viable competitively, and has an even higher learning curve than Mario imo.

I find that D3 honestly is a very overrated character. It's very feasible for most (but not all characters) to actually play in a way that lets you not get grabbed by him since he doesn't have a real approach and is generally speaking a rather slow character. His other attacks generally aren't very threatening besides his easily avoided U-tilt and Smashes, and his aerials should rarely ever kill you unless he gets a gimp or if he recently died.

Mario vs D3 isn't Mario's worst matchup assuming you can play consistently a certain way. Well, it might suck a bit on FD, but on other stages, if you get a lead, it's not like he can do anything about it if you deliberately avoid him. I actually beat someone who used D3's standing chaingrab against me (in friendlies wtf).

No. Samus is bad. Period. Her zair which is one of her best moves does 4%. She doesn't have that a reliable kill move. Her damage racking is pretty and she really doesn't have anything going for her. Samus was good in melee because she could kill and do decent damage. Now her killpower is back to being bad and damage racking isn't good.

Dedede is an overrated character. The idea of his CG guaranteed on certain characters regardless of percent was amazing and his extremely good grab range made it easy to grab. People adapted to how they play and now he isn't as good. That and for some reason most of the better characters don't get CG'd. The big thing that's good about Dedede is that he can fight lowered tiered characters very well.

Mario vs D3 isn't Mario's worst matchup assuming you can play consistently a certain way. Well, it might suck a bit on FD, but on other stages, if you get a lead, it's not like he can do anything about it if you deliberately avoid him.
It's not easy to get a lead on Dedede with Mario. He will live for a long time and his Utilt will kill us around 100% if fresh (which it should be). He is probably our 2nd hardest MU since our range is bad and his grab range is just that good (it outranges our jab).

I actually beat someone who used D3's standing chaingrab against me (in friendlies wtf).
Lol. Fail D3.

A move doesn't have to do a lot of damage to be amazing. It just has to be consistently useful. Samus's Z-air is never affected by move decay, and when sweetspotted, it does 7%, which is quite respectable. Mario's N-air does only 5% non-sweetspotted, but it's still a very good move. A lot of ROB's stuff does extremely low damage, but is still very good due to how consistent it is.

Samus doesn't have trouble killing once you hit a KO percent, which is unlike Sonic who can't kill since he can't legitimately land KO moves. She has many safe and fairly easy to land options. D-tilt if fresh enough is good, especially since she can combo into it with Bombs/F-air. Charge Shot is great for edgeguarding. Z-air actually is quite good for edgeguards too at high percents. U-tilt has massive range, comparable to Snake's and is a good anti-air option. Samus can also compensate for her lack of kills with her solid edgeguard game in general due to having an S-tier recovery. Lastly F-smash isn't an unviable KO option, since it hits on frame 10 and the massive leanback can help mindgame into it.

Samus despite being floaty and having a slow D-air, is also a very hard character to juggle consistently, since Bombs work like Cape Stalling and mini-grenades at the same time. She also survives extremely long due to her weight and S-tier recovery, and she stands a fair chance of winning in the Snake matchup.

Samus is a fundamentally decent character that is simply underpowered in terms of KO percents the same way Mario is. Up her KO power in Balanced Brawl, she immediately becomes nothing short of amazing.

Hey guys, I'm finally going to my first big tourney in 2 weeks, I'm entering for Melee and Brawl. Any tips you guys have while dealing with a tourney.
Have a good secondary so you can fight some high teirs like Mk or D3. Oh yea, don't get nervous. I had been told that chewing gum helps you get less nervous.

Play friendlies, if you aren't playing a lot of friendlies, you aren't getting your money's worth.

Don't be like me and stop playing just because you need to "rest between matches". I even stopped when I was ****** in friendlies so hard.

Play as much as possible, learn everyone to extreme detail. The fact that I didn't do this at winterfest is what made me do so bad in pools.

Also, that's going to be the crux of your gameplay in large tournaments. I'd do $MMs if you wanna win something.

The gum thing is true for me. I stopped listening to music while I play awhile back, but I may start again to keep focused.

Like everyone said, try to CONSTANTLY play. 1$ MMs, friendlies, teams, singles, whatever...the more experience you have, the better. Also, try to play GOOD players...like the ones who win the tourneys. Play them and learn from them.

Did Famous lose to King Yoshi?

I recall beating him way back, but then again he might be 100000x better now. And he also didn't use MK against me. :D (Just Pika and D3)

**** MARIOS NOT MAKING IT OUT OF POOLS! I KNEW I SHOULD'VE GONE TO POUND!
He has gotten a lot better (And doesn't play Yoshi. Famous' Yoshi player was Poltergheist if I remember correctly.), and Famous was rusty as hell.

Get back into Brawl Famous, then we have to play some more. That being said, our games were fun, and you still managed to teach me some important stuff; especially how to use my jab better.

Metaknight needs to be banned.

There is no other character in the game that has across the board favorable matchups like that character, and there is also no other character who can stall like him either.

Since M2K officially proved that MK vs Snake is 52/48 in MK's favor...seriously.
I disagree. Also, he has a bad MU with Diddy. This has more or less been proved with ADHD. Diddy can put MK in a position where he has literally no options, and Diddy can punish everything he does. Just watch the matches between ADHD and M2K to see what I mean (if they managed to record them. I know they were having problems recording near the end of the tourny.).

With Pound 4, I'm a bit upset with the brawl brackets. There are so many people eliminated. Really good players like Armada, Snakeee, and Dark.Pch.
That's because there were a LOT of good players there. Some HAD to get knocked out before brackets.
Also, Snakeee is good, but he seemed rusty when I played him, or maybe he was just sandbagging really really hard?

EDIT:

Also, Smash64 made it out of the same pool as Famous, GOOD **** SMASH!
Oh god... His Ness looked so sexy in that pool. His set against Sanoscy was awesome. Especially when they were on Brinstar. He PK Fire's the cylinders as San goes to SL through the stage. It hits him, and the stage splits, leading to a crazy Ness spike.

Any other Mario's coming to VG Boot Camp's Indianapolis event besides me, Xero, and fromundaman?
When is that again? I don't think I'll be going. I am broke from Pound 4. My costs were a LOT higher than I expected, and I probably won't be attending another tourny for a few months.

Somehow I got to randomly Mario ditto Famous on halberd and beat Boss' Luigi with Mario in a friendly. I could tell Boss didn't want to play though :/ There was a noticeable difference in how much he enjoyed himself from when he was playing Brawl to when he was playing Melee.
****, I didn't know you were there... which is weird because now that I think about it, I saw your name in a pool my friend was in XD

Just about everyone who plays ICs competitively can CG...

Also, why is it when you guys talk about Seibrik it's "He's a MK, thus why X person lost" instead of how he's an awesome player? Playing MK isn't a free win, especially not at a tourny as full of amazing players as this.

Don't state this as a fact (yet).

It's been widely stated that M2K just sucks at the match-up. One match can't judge everything.
