If you can't make Mario work as a doubles character.

...Y'all are bad. :mario2:

But seriously, while he's no MK, Mario does great work if you can stand to actually synergize with your partner rather than (1v1/1v1) in the battle.

Protip: F.L.U.D.D. your partner towards your enemies when they do a powerful move. ZSS Side B, Ike FSmash/Eruption, Marth's NeutralB. Extending the range of your partner's move can set up some great situations, especially against campy characters.

There are many other characters can do better than Mario and that's why he's bad. Mario does benefit a lot by being close to his partner, but if the opponent's team can separate you you're kinda screwed. The FLUDD thing is such a gimmick and so hard to set up that it's not even worth it. Mario isn't a good character and a lot of other characters can do a better job at what Mario does.

Get a better partner, then. I'm not even joking at that point, Mario has potential as a 2v2 character as long as you keep him with your partner. If your partner gets a grab, Mario's FSmash is equal parts powerful, fast, and variable in range that you can usually take advantage of the vulnerability without the other opponent getting in the way, which can lead to quick KO's. Fireballs interrupt your opponents, and you can use them from far enough away to setup a much quicker cooldown for your partner's attacks at a small percentage trade.

Yes, it's mostly theorycraft, but the problem is I'm going to go ahead and keep to Mario while others drop him. I figure we're far enough into Brawl's lifetime that I'm going to keep having fun with my character that, when Smash 4 rolls around(or, alternatively, Project M finishes and takes over grassroots), I'll be able to move on simply enough. The rest of you? Well I'm seeing people drop the Mario Bros left and right. I'm not gonna do that.

I'm gonna train my Mario best I can, explore his faults and play to his strengths, like any Smasher should with their character. And then I'm going to outplay my opponents and win, mainly in 2v2. Because I can and will.

Mario is bad. I'm just going to be better. And during all of that, I'm going to have fun regardless of results, because I'm going to rep that plumber, freshen my cape, and leave my opponents dazed, confused, and covered in water.

I wish you all will do the same. Just sayin'.

Super some people are in this game to win. I don't blame anybody for dropping this character because they want to make money. I've considered it too, but I feel like if the Midwest stays MK-banned there is really no reason for me to do so.

I ****ing LOVE Mario in MK-banned environments. I love him even with MK around, too, but I hate counterpicking and then having my opponent go "lolMK". Luckily I have my own solid pocket MK that I may just start using against all other pocket MKs.

And I'm pretty ****ing good at that matchup anyway. I do WORSE against pocket MKs than I do people who main the character. Not sure why, and I don't care.

But in MK banned? I don't really have any worries. They have to be fairly proficient with a bad matchup for it to give me a hard time, which I'm just fine with. That's how it should be. I'm pretty damn good at this game, and this character just because of the huge amounts of time I've put into Mario. (Probably over 5k hours, it was 3k like a year and a half ago on only ONE of the Wiis we often practiced on, and that playtime was just how much Mario was played.)

But yeah, you can't really expect people in a competitive setting to want to stay with the character if their goal is to win. Even with the sheer amount of time I've put into this character it really hasn't been good enough for my own personal ambitions. I probably would have dropped Mario a long time ago if I were able to pick up another character naturally and quickly, which I can't in this game. Not sure why. (I CAN DO IT IN EVERY OTHER GAME)

tl;dr: Mario is pretty cool except against MK. It's okay to drop Mario if you want to win but whatever. Also Xero plays Mario wayyyyyyyy too much.

I'm in it to win and make waves with Mario. But right now most Mario's aren't even as good as '08 Boss, so I'm certain that we haven't pushed Mario to his limits yet. I believe it lies on his ftilt pokes, quick jab, and his special moves. Every one of his specials is magnificent in it's own way. FLUDD is the ultimate mindgame(especially, as I've said before, in landings), fireballs have great trajectory(I've thrashed many a low recovery), cape is... cape. And SJP is quick, one hell of a tricky disjoint(seriously, that last hotbox), and a good OoS option.

I just wish his normal A-game was just as useful. Fair is nigh useless except for a little flair, dtilt is only good in doubles when you're in a 2v1 scenario, and everything lacks range except FSmash and RARJCUSmash(Fun fact: This is a safe approach option against every Luigi I've faced).

Short version: Mario is bad, but he can fight. He can make money. But you're going to have to know your opponent's character as well as any three-month-main in order to have a fighting chance. Unless you fight MK which then, well, whatever, you're gonna lose.

Regardless, I'm defending the fact Mario is a good doubles character, moreso than most people think, so all this is just words on a screen to my original point. Singles is still gonna leave Mario in the dust, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of the tricks most characters use can't be used completely or even at all in a 2v2 scenario without leaving themselves open, or having their partner be subject to the same tactic(like bananas). Mario's lack of bread and butter techniques leaves Mario mains with fantastic ability to fight as always, with only the benefits of 2v2 affecting his game(as long as you avoid your partner).

I just wanna become the ultimate mario. (a.k.a. Flameleon) xD
You're only four hours away from me, soon to be a bit less come September really. I wouldn't mind going toe to toe with you to see who's a bit more ultimate in our attempt to become the best Mario. I know right now I lack matchup experience when it comes to fighting in regionals and their ilk, but that's something that'll be solved in time.

I don't play dittos... :/
Playing dittos doesn't prove who's the better mario. It's a stupid match up imo.

proves who knows the matchup better, which is still significant.
Well if that's the case, flame is ditto proof...if anyone beats him, count yourself lucky. xD
I only won one game against him and it wasn't easy. More like a ugly win for me.

When I was coming up as a mario player I always wanted to be boss. I was like "I am going be the next boss!" but, then I realized copying his style of play wasn't working for me. The reason I got a lot better was when I realized that I wanted to be the next Vato_break. Don't follow, Create.

I also feel that Mario has sum undiscovered potential that still needs to be unlocked by that 1 person. But at the same time I dnt blame any1 for wanting to drop Mario, cuz its juss hard to use a balanced char like Mario in a game where u need to play unfair. I still believe that wit a hell of allot of work its possible even wit mk around. Now that I think about it, Vato_Break imo definitely had potential to be the next Boss cuz hes a very good player from what I've seen so far. But then again I dnt blame him at all for pickin up sum1 new cuz Mario was standing in his way of achieving his true potential as a player. Did wish he stuck to Mario a lil while longer tho, juss to see wut would have gone down.......

Good idea thinking of using Mario as an Oli MU mixup, Infern.

I'm not particularly good, but sometimes I feel like I have a pretty solid lock on the Oli MU so you can talk to me if you want. Otherwise, you could always message Xero or even Hilt (especially Hilt). I'm sure he could break that Matchup down a lot better than I could.

I'm a big fan of that matchup. I don't know how well I can really explain what to do though.
FH Cape Pikmin, space bair, fireball landings to muck with pivot grabs. That's usually how I make my way through the matchup now. Oh, and RARJCUSmash for approaching. Remember to keep your finger on the grab button so you can charge through Oli's sidestep frames if he tries to bait.

It's a 2D fighting game with a simplified control scheme. There are health bars, not edges and blastzones.

That's like saying Digimon Rumble Arena blatantly copied smash brothers. They didn't. It's a genre. I personally think it sounds super hot. With Sly Cooper and Parappa The Rappa there isn't much more to ask for (except for Spyro, but obviously the entire roster hasn't even been displayed).

There's no shame in taking a concept from anoter company (in this case, it is a roster of Sony characters in a game that resembles a fighting game), it is what encourages competition and development across various genres and allows the consumer to choose what they would prefer, or to have even more variety if the play both.

I don't see a problem here.

I'm being completely serious, actually. Like, not even trolling a little bit.

The move is very useful.
Useful is Peach's fair. Useless is Mario's fair.

You either be trollin' or you've been playing too much Project M.

But seriously, how do you use it? I do it because it's fun as hell to throw out, but it's not what I'd call useful.

Can't you do hilarious things by standing behind Peach and FLUDDing her Bomber?

But yeah, I don't believe any of you until I see documented evidence of fair being useful. Not that I'm going to stop using it myself - it's a ton of fun. Not practical, but fun.

Situational, but I'll keep in mind as a mixup against vertically challenged characters. Personally, I like situations.
But that's what this game is. Mix-ups and situational scenarios where you have to decide between your options based on how your opponent previously reacted to them.

With Mario being a mediocre character with mediocre options the majority of the time (compared to other characters), it's important to not always pick your best options for specific situations because our best options aren't ever really that good. It's more important to mix things up.

That's why you see good Marios often ignore a guaranteed follow-up for the chance of a more damaging mix-up option. Given Fair's properties and potential (Our only meteor, can set-up for jab locks, decent range compared to our other aerials, devastating for characters that lack a meteor cancel offstage, forces a favorable RPS rolling situation if unteched onstage, etc.) I can see why someone would like it.

I can't explain to you how it's useful but maybe I can try to get some of my stuff recorded this weekend.
