Thanks for the advice. It's a shame I really don't like tap jump on, it would help with some of this OOS stuff.

That reminds me, what controller configs do other mario users use? I just go with standard, with TJ off, atm.

Swap a shield button (the one you don't use) with either special or jump, whichever's more comfortable for you to use. I set R to special because I claw and it's pretty ****ty to try and press R and B at the same time, but R and Y is gravy.

I sucked it up and just turned Tap Jump back on. Way easier and not hard to adjust. Only problem I got is doing U-airs without double jumping but I avoid that by using the C-stick.

I only make one change to my control scheme. X set to specials. I always jump with Y, and with this control scheme, it lets me buffer everything out of jump extremely consistently, and I don't need to claw.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyZUlALAArc <- watch this video to see why I always jump with Y.

There is no special control scheme that lets you buffer U-air out of shield however. To do that you must lightly hold the control stick upwards and input Jump+Attack.

Something like that, and judging from how Mike places in low tiers, it doesn't seem like his Mario has changed that much. Certainly he can clutch out his wins here and there in low tiers since he's patient and smart, but he doesn't strike me as really knowing how to use Mario unlike some of the other people who placed higher that that linked tournament who are known dedicated users of their character.

I'm pretty certain Vato would likely place higher than Mikehaze for instance, given he was able to attend that tournament. I don't really see Mike's Mario actually being better, just from what I know of him. He just plays gayer, and thus would do better in the ditto matchup especially if he by chance were to go up against someone he knew like Vato. I mean lol, I am pretty sure I took game 1 off Mike's Mario pretty convincingly going aggro. He's not THAT special in low tiers.

I don't appreciate the trolling. And it's completely not true at all you suggest this is "my character", especially since my main is actually G&W for this game (and then I use a bunch of characters seriously on the side, Mario is one of them, but he's my main specifically for Melee). I'm merely making an observation and suggesting why Mike places where he does in low tiers. I don't think it's really because he's any good with Mario. I just think various people haven't bothered playing as gay as him. Like honestly, I was definitely not that good of a player back in 08-09, and my matches against Mike for the most part were close enough to have gone either way, before my realization of how gay Mario's strategy and ditto matchup actually were. If I could go down to the wire against Mike pretty much only knowing mostly the aggro aspect of Mario (which was my strategy back then) and he just barely beats me camping me out, I'm pretty certain that my significantly more campy playstyle would have the edge on Mike today.

And if any one of you played as gay as I currently do, I don't see why most of you would lose to Mike in the ditto though. The Mario ditto is won by the gayest player for the most part (I mean lol, Pierce beat Boss in the ditto, it's a pretty stupid matchup and Pierce probably had the edge since he's probably more patient and knows a lot), but there's a lot of smaller things that Mike probably doesn't know about Mario since he never frequents these boards. If Mike actually knew the character, I would wager him probably placing top 3-4ish without fail, but that's not the case, and I'm confident that most of the people who frequent this board could definitely place better than him.

With that that's my statement of confidence assuming that most of the Mario users here know what their options are. And back to your point Vato, your Mario is almost certainly better than Mike's. I just think you sometimes need to take things a little slower, and like almost all of us, we can work on making smarter choices.

Mike's Marth >>>> everyone, so yeah duh, he's a better player.

But his Mario? He's pretty generic. Against me he basically just relied a lot on knowing when I would shield and randomly grabbing and of course he was making me do all the work approaching. He couldn't really land a kill move on me, while I would pull out some really early kills on his Mario through my experience in landing Smashes.

I don't think he really knows the character that well. He just knows how to play gay (besides making weird reads), which wins the Mario ditto, and that's probably good enough for him to be competent in low tiers since probably one of Mario's hardest matchups in low tiers is the ditto anyway.

And I don't think it's a question of skill or knowledge. The Mario ditto is just a gay matchup, and he plays gay quite well.
Gay as in never taking unnecessary risks, never approaching unless it's safe, never try to bite into baits, camping with shield and good spacing. Gay in the competitive sense is playing as conservatively as possible. And I fully condone that playstyle for Mario, given that he's fundamentally a very defensive character in the sense that his best strategy is spacing and reacting to approaches. Unfortunately this happens to make the Mario ditto VERY frustrating.

Mike pretty much outgayed me last time I met him. He just chose to play with extremely low risk, and in the 2nd and 3rd matches of my set, only moved after he considered the situation safe, like if he knew I was going to shield, or after I made an unnecessary approach.

Anyhow instead of Up-B oos, I highly suggest learning to use U-air out of shield. It's Mario's most practical out of shield option besides B-air imo. 98% of all N-airs out of shield should be replaced with a U-air as far as I'm concerned. Yes it requires you to be technical, but as a bonus, it also makes you angle shield upwards which is great when you realize one of Mario's weaknesses is small shield size.

you do know i played you two years ago? LOL

Real talk though, i don't really try in low tiers. I get really really bored and it's not my main. I beat Xyro with mario (he won the tournament) at Hobo in low tiers, and didn't remotely try vs kprime/yosh who i lost to in losers. I was trying to save my energy for regular singles.

Dunno why you think there's something wrong with playing gay. By your definition of it, i think you mean playing smart.

Yeah Mike, make no mistake, honestly if you're playing gay, you're pretty much playing Mario right. ESPECIALLY if it's the ditto matchup, and I commend people who play right.

I just honestly feel most dedicated Mario mains would be ****** low tiers however if they played more gay while implementing better options.

Mario is easy to use imo, any smart player can do good with him.
All black people can play Mario. No lie.

So there are way too many midwest Marios, meaning it's time for me to move on to a better character. I'm gonna drop Mario for a while and develop my Marth.

Oh, I'll still keep Mario in my pocket, don't get me wrong. I just think I'm at the point where dropping Mario for a while and picking up another character would be a lot more healthy for me as a player. I've overplayed Mario to the point where I really don't understand how other characters in the game work, which hurts me in tournament. I'll be developing my random as well as my Marth. And I'll still visit here pretty regularly too, because I <3 the Mario boards. :)

Yeah, knowing multiple characters is a good way of learning how to play the game. Sometimes little things from one character also transition to another character quite well.

On that note, I would like to say I'd be picking up another character. But that would be a **** lie. I can't play any other characters!

Besides MK... but that isn't really playing. Moreof staring into space while I just do dumb stuff.
