I'm pretty sure what Kira was getting at is that the tournament is about encouraging n00bs to play the game. While it's nice to say that SoCal has some really good players, whose to say that would last long at all? People that we think love the game and love the competition could easily pack up bags any day and quit (look at P) and who would be there to replace him? Where would you draw from? Marthpwnzer? (Bad analogies, but you get my point.) This is all about opening up the game to more people, and just encouraging them to pick up the controller, and getting hooked.

And in all honesty, when smashfests are hosted, rarely do people have the patience to play with n00bs or new people in general and they just end up playing their friends and **** gets segregated. New people feel too intimidated sometimes and rarely do newcomers just sit down and ask for **** just so they can learn. I'm not saying that a scrub tournament is a replacement for the hardwork and losing that a person HAS TO face in order to get good, but it should make the process a bit easier to swallow, and at the same time a little more fun.

You rankers ****ing swear like it matters THIS MUCH. This is minors, you guys are majors. You should be talent-scouting and encouraging them to get good, and not saying, "Oh this sucks"

Ya srsly ranked peeps try not to be such hard-azzes.

But on a more serious note, I also think this is a good idea. Not that I attend melee tournaments (even though I dream about it), I still feel like backing this point. One pretty solid reason this is a good idea is simply because it's different from the norm. It mixes it up, and adapting to different situations is something that will improve players.
And as several people have said, it makes it a more feasible tournament for many more players. Mediocre players will get a chance to feel the pressure and understand what it's like to be one win away from getting money. I'm sure many players have the mindset of "Well, I hope I just don't get matched up with any ranked players for a couple rounds, and I beat the people around my level so I place somewhat decently."
But at this arcadian tournament, players know that they can perform if they put their mind to it, so there is more competition/interest in succeeding and improving.

Also, many ranked players are opposed to this for dumb reasons, I'm guessing: 1. They don't get to play 2. They had to learn the hard way themselves, so why shouldn't everyone else?

But all that being said, I really look forward to being ***** in a normal tournament. I don't mind the hard way. :)

probably on a platform
the two things i keep hearing are

1. it's stupid i can't enter
2. what are they going to learn/how are they going to get better

1. if so cal didn't have tournies every weekedn i might agree with you, but since there are so many, you can miss one, it won't kill you
2. people don't have to continuously get ***** by zhu/lucky/lovage/kira in tourny to learn/get better, that's like saying only ranked players can teach the unranked which is bull and you all know it

yes this tourny makes it a hell of a lot easier for me to place somewhere with money, but one cool thing about this is how many times have the arcadians wanted to play each other in tourny? i know i've wanted to play cam again, steven, atlus (though he's not entering), pat, etc.

and yes arcadians can mm and whatnot, but i know for me, it's more satisfying beating someone in tourny that it is in a mm

On the other side of things, have you seen a ranked player (besides yourself) who thinks this is a GOOD idea?

guess who are some of the strongest supporters? macd and neighborhood p, top-ranked arcadians
And if this tournament didn't happen those top-ranked arcadians wouldn't have entered any other tournament that might have happened this weekend. Right now it seems like there is a good amount of hype from socal, and it makes me wish i could enter, but if we did allow ranked players it would just be another tournament and I'm betting a lot of players would just not attend, making it the same size as any other tournament. There is actually a lot of support from the shallower end of the pool, if you look through the threads you'll find it's about even if not more in favor of the lower end.

put me in a place where I'll go 0-2 every tournament, and I'll gladly improve :)
besides, everybody starts somewhere, pretty sure a lot of ranked players started out with a couple 0-2s
Well, me too. If I went to Florida and started getting 25th and 33rd I'd work my *** off to get up to their level. But like I said before, not everyone has this mindset, and not everyone can produce that type of drive. Some people, dare I say it, don't even care about the game anymore. But look, one simple idea for a tournament has brought back a lot of those people out of retirement.

I guess we'll have to wait until we can see how many people show up before I can really make a point about how good the idea was, but I think it's good there are people who don't like it so that people become more open-minded through the debate and stuff. Arcadians could definitely learn from your mindset too. with Lovage they could learn to get tech skill and see how far it takes you alone (not that he isn't smart too but hes' never done poorly in tourney- that should speak for itself).

basically we'll see when the tournament happens

If you have never gone 2 and out, you don't know what it's like to show up to enter a tournament and hope that you get one of the handful of people you can beat. You don't know what it's like to have won ~10 tournament sets in three years of entering tournaments. I'm not saying this isn't my fault, because it is. I lacked the natural ability, know how and drive to get good when I first started, and I'm paying for that now as I try to play catch up [still without real know how, this game makes no ****ing sense to me].

My point [do I have a point?] is that you [the ranked players] can complain about this tournament all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that this can be a really FUN thing for some of the people at the bottom of the barrell. Yes, there are some people who are supporting it for the 'easy money', but that doesn't mean it's not a positive thing for a lot of people.

ahh man steven and cam winning teams
eat it, sheri mac
nah **** that. we've got the strategy and we're both getting better. We're definitely taking this

And one of my friends who just plays me occasionally for fun is probably going. Usually when I tell him about a tournament he just kinda shrugs and doesn't want to go(because he knows he's just going to get ***** in tournament and not have a lot of fun), but when I showed him this thread he seemed rather interested. From what I have heard, this tournament is for people like that. It doesn't matter if you're opposed to the idea of this tournament; it's going to happen.
