hey im $led been playing melee competitively since April 2012, i main young link , and he's been my favorite Nintendo character since i was 12. YES i know he's not the best character in melee, but i believe i can take him very far. In my opinion hes alot better then ppl think. I have a real passion for my character and love using him, and aim to be the best young link main ever.

so to all the low tier mains..

i was wondering why you play who you play,

and if you could share words of wisdom and/or words of encouragement

I wish I could say I belong in here, but there's no way I would feel welcome while maining as obvious a top-tier as Link.

Biggest problems with YL are his kill options. It's harder to land a finishing blow and people live to higher percents. That said, don't spam dair. Concentrate on nairs and bairs. Dsmash and ftilt are your friends. Good priority with Upsmash (useful for juggles). Concentrate on fair spacing. Oh and spam the **** out of them. Generally its a good idea to have a bomb in your hand and then throw the boomerang first. Make sure you move around and take advantage of the fact you can pull bombs in the air (don't be a standing target obv). Uugh.. firespike?

I heard axe won a big pre-apex tournament with a lot of good players at it last year. it had like 100+ people and some top players as well. It's possible.

"Heroes" is a word.

Wisdom: I think you should main whoever you want, but I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest that you pick up a character that is at least top 10 as a secondary. That way if you ever lose the passion for Young Link that you so clearly have now, you aren't screwed. This also means if you ever get to a high level where YL doesn't cut it but you want to go further, you can just keep the YL on the side for specific matchups. I can think of at least one top player that does this with YL already...
Watch some matches of Armada's YL if you haven't already.
;D

Sled your young link is looking really solid, especially since you really haven't been playing that long at all. Just keep at it and I'm sure you'll see some great results. Obviously, low tiers are at a disadvantage; they're definitely worse than other characters. However, just because your character is worse than someone else's doesn't mean that it's impossible. I understand that the gap is pretty substantial, but there are plenty of low tier mains that have achieved high levels of success. Like other people have said, keeping top tiers in your pocket is still a good idea though. I know you play falco pretty frequently and I would suggest keeping him sharp in case you ever feel the need to bust it out.

Also I play a low tier because I don't want to use the best characters in the game as a crutch. Practically everyone plays spacies (and I used to main falco as well) so I'd like to switch it up and be a bit different. Maybe stand out a bit more. Not to mention the fact that Axe is an incredible inspiration. I still play falco and fox pretty damn frequently as well, I still think they're really fun to play as, I'd just rather not main either of them anymore.

nah man speak for yourself. there's lots of **** low tier players.

shoutouts to pikapika. i teamed with him at a tournament in new york once and he picked pichu in the finals and walked around and taunted while i won a 2 vs 1 set pretty much. easily both the best low tiers player and the best teams player lmao.

Be innovative

Remember that people don't know how to play against your character

Abuse that, don't be textbook

I main Falco, obviously, but I secondary about every low tier that there is. They are incredibly fun and satisfying to play, and they take a lot of work. But hey, look at Phish-it, the DK main, or Axe and Taj (Obviously) or even to people like Pikachad (who was able to take a game off of Axe's Pikachu with MARIO at FC). Imo, low tiers are tons of fun. In friendlies, i use them almost exclusively, and YL is one of my favorites, behind Mario and Luigi.

I say keep on playing almost exclusively Ylink! I mean, of course play any other characters you like and learn their techniques because I think that improves your overall skill, which translates to every character. But just be patient and you'll definitely improve (you live in NYC so that's a good start right there lol.) Just keep in mind YOU'RE going to have to be the one creating the YLink metagame for the most part, so you have to be creative, try new things, and practice a lot. I definitely think YLink has potential, so make it happen! =D

Edit: And learn to shield drop, and make lots of use of it. Seriously, not enough people do that, but it's huge. It's techniques like that which can put low tier players at an advantage. I believe Axe would agree with me on this too - he seems to have caught on. This is also the reason Kage The Bull doesn't place as high as he could (though he still does incredibly well with Ganon.)

thanks for the adice ..i also working on other secondary characters to help when ylink just cant do it ...because some match-ups are just to impossible =/ (flashbacks of KK double 4 stocking me at rom )

lol im def working on a meta game for do-able match-ups also to show how ylink wrecks peaches whole life and i can shield drop decently i do it alot in friendlies but nerves mess up whatever skill i have in tournament ..

If you really work hard on one character you can do pretty well in tournaments unless they're really bad, and even then you can do alright.

As for why I play a low tier: I do better with Link and really enjoy playing as him. I used to try switching because "lol Link must be holding me back," but I discovered that was not the case for me after months of trying to get good at various high tier characters.

I've mained fox since I was like 6 before melee was a thing, I'm not gonna switch my character just bc ppl like you have this opinion of fox mains

...Or just play SDR. All characters have been made a lot more viable and you can finally just play any character you would like to rep at a high level. I never liked the idea of using a top 5 character as an alternate in case I were to struggle. TBH, that just takes the variation of the game for me. Bad matches or matches where I am at a disadvantage makes the game al ot more challenging to me where I am going o have to think and find ways around my opponents patterns and options. It's the kind of challenge I strive for in almsot every fighter. For every fighting games I play, I always pick a character I like and it usually ends up to be the right decision. Sometimes my alternate characters are high tier, but in case like melee, my alternates are low (AKA I never use them). But then again, I play SDR now so I don't have to worry about that anymore! :D

I main Samus, but my secondary and third characters are Mewtwo and G&W.
