If the audience is not interested in the message, why are we posting? Aaron was completely right to say that my posts were irrelevant, not because of the message but because of the audience. David, Adam, and myself already understand this stuff, we're posting to other people that are not us in the attempt to exchange ideas. If you guys don't like my posts...I don't have to post. Neither does David or Adam. We do it for you guys, and if you don't like like it you can do what we all did and spend a few thousand hours figuring out the game yourself.
Sooo that sarcasm. You do it for us, but you don't you have to. Got it.

I personally am ok with you not posting.
A lot of what makes characters good or bad in this game is only relative to other characters and is best explained with an intuitive sense of knowledge that is neither factual nor direct. It is just not easy to translate into words.
I was attempting to make a distinction between character-to-character interactions/dynamics ("matchups") and character attributes (which could make all of a characters matchups bad). If a character's attributes are lower the rest, then yes, they are low tier because they are bad relative to everyone else, but it isn't specific nuances of various matchups that affect that fact, it's really the poor character attributes. This is the way it is for the bottom tiers at the very least.

"Explaining something with an intuitive sense of knowledge" is an oxymoron. To say you have an intuitive sense of knowledge in something is to say you know but you can't explain it. So how can any explanation be good when using something that is, by definition, anti-explanation?

You know you don't have to post if you haven't yet articulated your intuition into facts and principles.

Micro and macro are not starcraft terms, they are general terms that starcraft happened to pick up.
I actually made a longer post explaining why I took issue with use of those words, but I lost it. I just assumed it was stolen from starcraft. Just what are you micromanaging and macromanaging in Smash? Or are "micro" and "macro" meant to be prefixes for something else? It isn't specified. I like the gif, but the sentiment has no substance. Why would anyone throw their controller when reading a forum post they disagree with?

granted micro/macro are very very strongly associated with sc because of how ridiculously popular the game is, so i don't really blame you on that lol

  • macro refers to generalities, basically ties together the tools/qualities/etc of a character together to form a cohesive overarching strategy
  • micro refers to specifics, ie components that go into forming the macro, that might have specific applications but often aren't very significant without context
at least those are my definitions lol. its can get pretty subjective between people.
but for most people macro = generalities and micro = specifics, and that's usually close enough of a definition to know what people mean

edit: oh you were talking about someone else understanding things. so you probably know this already <_<
on the topic of term clarity, i think its pretty self-explanatory considering the prefix's meaning...oh well .-.

Through my experiences I've come to the conclusion that people who main low tiers fit into 2 categories

1. People who legitimately have an undying love for their character because of how the character plays or the game series the character comes from
2. People who pine for attention i.e. "Hey look at me I play a BAD character in tournament!"

Most low tier mains are a mix of the two imo, but if I had to say, I think most Link/Luigi mains are purely #1 (These are the guys you see rocking LoZ backpacks, Link stickers, Luigi caps etc.). For people who are purely #2, I think that would be most people who main low tiers and switch between them, because they just play a bunch of bad characters only cuz they're bad, and not because they really love their main.

I don't think it affects skill though, because there are good/bad low tier mains that fit both archetypes.

edit: no one will ever admit to being #2 though LOL

i think 90% of people who POST about their character fall into #2

or maybe that's just me thinking of old-school smashboards circa 05, nowadays, the people who are actually playing low tiers in the 2012 metagame really are heros and i have a lot of respect for them.

what was more impressive to the minds of the common people? random spacey player #68 making it into bracket at pound 4? or lord HDL allllllmost making it out of pools at pound 4. (pound 4 largest melee tourny of all time for anyone wondering)

I'd say that I'm 99% #1, 1% #2.

I used to be more Number two but then I picked up Marth, so I can't really say that as much anymore lol.

Id say 2 is partially bull****. Everyone is looking for attention in a competitive environment.. if anyone says otherwise they are delusional.

Oh yeah, everyone definitely wants recognition of their skill Kage, no question, but #2 want it much more than the average player imo. In the same vein as what oscar said, I think almost everyone understands that it takes a lot less to be recognized when you play a low tier (there are less people who use the character and they're universally considered worse, so more people will notice you), than if you played a top tier. If you play a space animal then you better be ****ing great if you want to get attention.

That's why I think if you're playing a low tier just because they're bad, and not because you really love the character, then you're very clearly pining for attention.

Well these days I'd say it's almost the same regardless if you are using a low tier or top tier. People are so experienced that you need to be able to somehow surpass that. You still need to take out big names if you want that kind of attention.

I made an entire blog about this once. Low Tier Whoring is a legitimate thing lol. There's way too many people who play low tiers just so they can get recognition for playing low tiers.

theres nothing wrong with wanting recognition, as long as you're doing it for the right reasons

it doesnt make much of a difference in the end

90% of #2's also don't even go to tournaments and only post on the brawl+/project M boards nowadays LOL

I'm in the #2 category. I've played a bunch of low tiers in tournament for one bad reason or another. Usually it's from feeling a character, or feeling myself, or having more fun, or trying to prove something, or basically any reason other than trying to win the tournament.

Overall there's a lot of the time when I feel like zelda is my best bet in a given tournament set, but even that's not universally true given how bad her MUs can fluctuate her success if the opponent chooses to exploit them correctly.

I mean, it's not like every entrant in a tournament is out to win the tournament either. People enter tournaments for all sorts of reasons.

amen i love zelda and ylink/toonlink ( and he was the first character i ever used in this game )

i wish everyone who plays the game just to win ..( high tier ppl who secretly love low tiers)

will never know the joy of learning and mastering things with a character you really love

i was wondering why you play who you play,

I main Zelda because people always expect to see Sheik on the stage when Zelda is chosen. But then I don't switch and I end up taking them by surprise by moving Zelda like no one's ever seen and Lightning Kicking them into oblivion.

There is a guy at my weeklies who money matches with bowser and rarely losses. Tiers arent as important as people make them. If u play smart and have a good understanding of your character's strenghts and weaknessrs, you can win against anyone.

1) This thread is ancient
2) No, tiers are there for a reason. He is probably just fundamentally better than everyone he is beating. If a player is just straight up much better, they will win most of the time.
