Don't expect to get the first job you want at 17. Not saying that you have to work at McDonald's or anything, but you try getting some other work experience first.

It's hard to work at gamestop because everyone wants to work at gamestop.

Also, you have to not know **** about video games to get hired, so you're probably out of luck there.

…And how to drop off a resume, for first-timers!

  1. If you have no experience, try family. Do you have an uncle, brother, family friend or other trusted adult around who runs a business? It’s the best way to start off. It’s that reference that’ll get you your own job later on!
  2. If you don’t, start small. Get a mall job! Many small business won’t hire employees without references, so you might have to do your time in an apron or uniform first. I did! For many, many years.
  3. There are best times to drop off a resume. Early in the week is usually best, because managers get busier as the week goes on. Mornings are good, especially in retail/restaurants, unless it’s a place that serves breakfast. Figure out a slow time. Never approach someone if they look busy. Wait.
  4. DON’T GO IN WITH YOUR FRIENDS. I can’t stress this enough! It’s really unprofessional. Go alone and ask for a manager. Chances are if you just drop the resume off with a sales clerk, it won’t make it much further.
  5. Look the part. If you’re dropping off a resume at a dress shop, wear a dress. Figure out how the employees dress. Don’t show up in a hoodie, pulling your ratty old resume out of a backpack. No need for a shirt and tie if you’re applying at Cinnabon, but at least make sure you look like a tidy version of yourself. Pretend you’re going to see Grandma.
  6. Take the time to make a decent resume! Pages and Word both have really nice templates. Take advantage of them. My best tip? I always print my resumes on cardstock or other nice papers. It’s silly, but first impressions count. It looks like I mean business.
  7. Try and find out the name of the manager or person in charge of hiring, and address the resume to them. This shows that you’re not just looking for work, but that you’re looking to work for them.
  8. Don’t hang around and shop after you’ve dropped it off. Be courteous, polite and have a firm handshake. Smile, say thank you, and leave.
  9. If there’s a particular place you really, really want to work, stop by a few times before you ask if they’re hiring. Make a few purchases, be friendly to the employees. Get on their good side. If it’s a restaurant or other food service spot, tip well. Then, when you notice a bit of downtime, ask if they have any openings. Take it into account, come back another time.
  10. Brush your teeth.

Enjoy your employment.

Then why haven't I been hired yet?

This is the type of stuff they need to teach in high school.

You'd be surprised, my school actually teaches that. I'm just too busy playing Pokemon or LoL to pay attention to minor details in class. I just get my work done.

Maybe in the Canadian education system, but here in AMURICA we are priming our children for success.

Yeah, but the American school system has to teach to standardized tests so that the schools can get federal funding, especially in areas where property taxes are low or don't raise sufficient funds to pay for good schooling. No Child Left Behind mandated this and places more emphasis on success in standardized tests than in creating capable American citizens with knowledge of the world around them and practical skills to use in their real life. Of course anyone who knows **** about education will tell you that this is what you should NOT do for the public school system in America, but politicians don't know **** about anything and most of them didn't go to public schools anyway.

ISN'T THIS COUNTRY GREAT?

I dunno about you guys, but my school is preparing me for high paying jobs in places such as the astronomical field at NASA, the medical field, the law field, etc so that a Mexican like me can get a job anywhere in a gringo dominated environment

That said I think I could actually get a job easy in the US, I just gotta pick a state with nearly no Hispanics and then just get the position on affirmative action.

Problem Americans? :troll:

I had one class that taught that. Life management or something like that. I learned a few cool things about finding a job and whatnot but most of it was really just busy work, like 99% of high school.

A few things.
1. You're not mexican. I forget what you really are. Costa Rican? I dunno.
2. Gringo means "outsider," so I don't get it in the context of this situation. What do you mean by Gringo? If you live in Florida, that means you live in what is still a predominantly white state, right?

Thanks for the help and tips. I've already done my resume and stuff. But I can't use it until I get my first job.
Either Taco Bell or Checkers/rallys. Both of them are torture for resisting so much good food.

"According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, African-American teenagers aged sixteen to nineteen experienced an unemployment rate of 33.3% in 2005 as compared with 14.2% for white teenagers and 12.4% for Asians. Even within the racial group, black male teenagers (36.3%) were more likely to be unemployed in 2005 than black female teenagers (30.3%).
In 2005 African-American men, with a 10.5% unemployment rate, were considerably more likely to be out of work than Hispanic men (5.4%), white men (4.4%), or Asian men (4%). In 2005 unemployment affected men and women overall to the same degree (5.1%), and white men and white women to the same degree (4.4%), but affected Hispanic women (6.9%) more than Hispanic men (5.4%) and African-American men (10.5%) more than African-American women (9.5%)."

The only change since then is that the numbers have generally gone up, but they're the same percentages and ratios.

There are MORE unemployed white people than any other race, but if you're black, you're more likely to be unemployed, and if you're asian, you're more likely to BE employed. Just statistics.

I dunno, I'll look around. I did a project on unemployment in 2010, so I'm sure I can find some sources.

http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t02.htm
There we go.
If I may, here are just some snippets from that.
August 2010
White: 8.6% unemployment
Black: 16.3% unemployment
Asian: 7.2 unemployment

August 2011
White: 8.0%
Black: 16.7%
Asian: Nothing for asians.
