Games
So, on the way back from SMYM, the conversation between me, Drew and Nick moved from lots of different topics, including certain games that all three of us enjoyed because they did something more than the usual game does. There were a few that I played that the other two hadn't, so I was going to send them links to those games, but I figured most of the people frequenting this thread would also enjoy them, so a post seemed more appropriate.
Here's a few games you all might enjoy. Some are weird, some are beautiful, but all are just really good. Oh, they're also all free.
Aether - Platformer about a boy exploring various worlds on his pet alien(this is one of the games I mentioned specifically during the ride)

Cave Story - Incredibly detailed and polished game that plays a bit like a Metroid game. Really good story and music.

Cloud - Sort of abstract and perhaps only appealing to me because of how much I like clouds.

Deaths - Short little platformer that tracks the actions of the last 50 players to play each level to help you get past obstacles.

Don't Look Back - Really neat little game about descending into hell. Sort of reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus in terms of mood (not so much graphics or gameplay).

Execution - Short, experimental game, but pretty affecting, especially upon replaying.

Iji - Really well made adventure/action game that reminds me of a cross between 2d Metroid games and Deus Ex.

Karoshi, Karoshi 2.0, Karoshi Factory - All three of these are built on the same premise: you must kill your character to pass the levels. They are also built on another premise: totally ****ing around with the player. There are a few levels with some novel solutions, to the point where they become unintuitive and somewhat frustrating (don't be ashamed to use a walkthrough on those levels).

Knytt - Basically a Metroid game without the fighting.

Knytt Stories - Expands on the basic premise of Knytt with more levels and features. There is a large community surrounding this series of games and there are tons of player-made stories available for download on the forum for the game (follow the second link).

Painajainen - Really relaxing platformer game that has a nice mix of puzzles requiring precise execution and lateral thinking.

Seiklus - One of the first independent games I ever played (second after Cave Story) and still one of my favorites. This game has a really wonderful and varied atmosphere, some excellent music and a good sense of how to hint at solutions and secrets.

Seven Minutes - Really difficult platformer that has the player trying to escape a temple in the last seven minutes before the world ends.

Squish - Nice little puzzle platfomer. A demake of the PSP game Crush.

The Linear RPG - A game made in a 48-hour design contest that reveals many of the reasons I don't play too many RPGs.

Verge - A pretty brilliant little game where the player has to explore two parallel worlds - the living world and the spirit world - to solve puzzles. The only way to enter the spirit world is to die in the living world, which makes for some unique solutions.

Within a Deep Forest - The best game ever featuring a cast of bouncing balls. Great music and just the right level of challenging jumping puzzles.

Anyway, that's a fairly long list of games that I have found to be not only fun to play, but also fun to think about afterwords. Hope you guys enjoy them and if you know of some games that are not listed here but are in a similar vein, let me know.
