DK wasn't in Super Mario Kart, and he took DK Junior's spot from MK64 onwards. But hey I don't blame ya, it's easy to get confused over that matter.
Actually, since the DK from Country is canonically supposed to be DK Junior, they're one and the same... so technically DK was in every MK.
But you bringing Mario Kart reminds me that Nintendo never does seems to do DK justice and it goes far beyond Smash... I mean, only DK and not even, at the very least, Diddy in MK8?
You know I actually considered adding "(if you count DK Junior)" but ultimately decided against it. I have regrets.

But I don't really blame them for removing all the Kongs except Donkey from Mario Kart; gotta make room for Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach, after all. :glare:

*Kaptain K. Rool gets added.*
Sakurai: "I'm terribly sorry. I know you all wanted to play as King K. Rool, but I hope you will enjoy playing as his brother instead."
Kaptain K. Rool is not King K. Rool's brother. It's King K. Rool wearing different clothes...

Going by the trophies in Brawl, Nintendo doesn't seem to be aware of that (or the story of the games was changed for the Japanese version).

I think it was just a genuine mistake by whoever wrote the trophy descriptions that never got corrected. The trophies occasionally just get something wrong, and since this little factoid from K. Rool's trophy was never backed up by anything else I'm inclined to believe it was a mistake.
And it's not a regional thing, I recall hearing even the Japanese players read the trophy and went "whaaaa?".

The only time this has ever been referenced was in the Brawl trophy. The Japanese version of DKC2 GBA confirms they're the same.

Even Melee does, with Dixie's trophy saying she teamed up with Diddy against "King K. Rool."

Plus it uses the K. Rool trophy from Smash 4.. an you'd think as good as some people are with making fakes SOMEONE would make a K. Rool render thats unique rather than the same picture we can all spot from a mile away. Just lazy.... I remember the Rayman leak back during Smash 4 days.. ahhh now that was a great quality fake

When you gotta take a picture of a videogame roster to leak, but you are also Sonic IRL so you gotta go fast!.
These leaks that use the K. Rool Paon model make me a bit uncomfortable though. Even if Sakurai used that model, Im sure it would look 10 times better than that.
Anyways, props to the leaker for taking effort in doing a pic and not just typing the roster.

well its blurry so lol But even from looking from the trophy in smash 4, the color in the leak is alot more brighter. Although that could be just the angle he took the picture from

Man, this waiting is driving me crazy. I feel if K Rool wasn't going to be a playable, Sakurai would have deconfirmed the character by now as an assist trophy or stage hazard. Well, that's what any decent human being would do, instead of giving you false hope for 6 months. If the Rool ends up not being playable in the game after all this waiting around, I'm going to be so salty.

Clones, my right foot, they didn't even use the DLC for Diddy, but Nintendo All-Stars instead. At least they kicked out Queen Bee...

But yeah, at least with Smash, the DK love problem can potentially get rectified over time if enough people ask for Rool and Kongs. With MK, rosters are practically determined by throwing darts on a board now.

honestly that's what I'm picturing what he's actually going to look like if he does get in as a new fighter

also to note, when the smash brothers 3DS roster leaked people said that shulk looked similar to little Mac. that it was the same render but they switched up the hair a bit. just noting

I'm leaning more towards a fusion of Rare and PAON K. Rool
I think his based look in the game is going to be his modern design. then as an skin, he'll have something that looks more like his classic version

I have the same impression too. If we get a classic version, it will be as a skin (like they did with Link, using his modern design as default and his old design as skin).

Edit: Judging by the excellent graphic designs team that Ultimate has (loved the "new" Ganondorf looks), it's safe to bet that if K. Rool makes it in he'll have an awesome design, Rare's or Paon's.

Nah, they'll definitely pick Rare K. Rool.

K. Rool would be a throwback character all about nostalgia. Why pick a design from games much less people have played? I'd sooner believe them making an original design that is based just on the Rare design but "smashified". I do not think any new design will be a "mixture" that includes Paon K. Rool; just Rare and the team's specific ideas about how K. Rool should look.

Paon K. Rool's days are numbered.

They would pick the design of King K. Rool that everyone is most familiar with; however, why would Nintendo consult today's Rare about K Roool's potential design? The original team of Rare has disbanded with key members leaving to start their own projects.

Oh, I meant the Smash team's specific ideas on how K. Rool should look like. That if there's a new K. Rool look, it would be a combination of Rare's K. Rool design from the SNES days combined with the Smash Brother's teams extensions of that design.

I really don't know why we are so worried about how he would look. just having him in the game in general is all that really matters. I don't care if it's the rare or paon design. I think it's going to be the paon because it's more polished and cleaner but we have to see. don't care how he looks, just put him in the game

Rare design: From classic games where most people know K. Rool from, was rebuilt for the costume
Paon design: From games very few people have played, did not get a playable costume

I have never seen a reason why K. Rool would have the Paon design other than just because it's "modern." Ridley didn't get his Other M design. Ganondorf is back to his Ocarina Of Time design. I can't imagine why anyone would actually anticipate the Paon design after getting the costume.

I like the Rare model better mostly because he's more imposing with the bigger crown and eye tic, and he actually had a tail. Paon K. Rool had a tiny crown, no tail, and less emphasis on the eye tic. They wanted to make him look less serious and they did a bit too good of a job.
However, one big gripe I have with Rare's design is that he doesn't have much room for expression - he has a bit of eyebrow action and he can open his mouth, but that's about it. They made it work, but there was room for improvement. Paon's K. Rool, by contrast, has a bigger and wider head that gives him plenty of space to knit his brow or have a big grin on his face.
I think a combination of the two would be best, take the dangerous look of Rare and the ability to emote from Paon and you've got a solid design.

K. Rool will more than likely get a redesign that harken's back to his origins but has new element's from his modern design and possibly completely new things due to his lack of current appearances.. we could see something akin to Duck Hunt, Megaman, Pit etc. Where his look is based on his retro Rare design with new elements to make him more modern.

I said this on an earlier page I don't care what design they use really (though if they do use paon give him a tail). I just DON'T want his paon voice! God it's so terrible. He sounds like a mentally handicapped fat Jerry Lewis/Professor Frink. How do you go from a deep menacing darth vader-esque voice in 64 to...that...and no I don't want realistic crocodile noises either because that wouldn't fit his character at all..

Would you be okay with it if they added K. Rool with the original costume but worn by a hyper-realistic crocodile?

I think Paon actually made him look more serious, like a completely collected villain with full intent on villainy, whereas the Rare design just has him looking crazy.

To be fair, crocodiles can do kind of a low hiss that sounds like the Darth Vader breathing, so it'd probably work better for K. Rool than for characters like Bowser and DK.

Here's a good question. DK is one of the more expressive characters in the roster. By proxy, Diddy has some pretty funny expressions as well. Should K. Rool also be as expressive as the Kongs?

Haven't seen many people trying palette swaps of K. Rool's other outfits, so I slapped together a few. Some of them aren't that great since I tried to only base them off Kremling Krewmates, but I had fun with it so whatever. Big image ahead.

Yes, definitely! One of K. Rool's best attributes is that he's able to be humorous even in the middle of trying to murder his arch nemesis, and the more of that he conveys in Smash the better. Even in his boss fights he's had a few goofs - the panicked hand flapping in DKC3 and the blinking eyes while covered in soot from DKC2 come to mind, not to mention his frequent glances directly at the screen in all three Country games.

I'm pretty sure K. Rool will look goofy as hell if he gets in. He's big, bulky and scary, but also very clumsy. Just imagine it: if overcharged, his blunderbuss would explode and make his face covered in gunpowder as he looks at the screen, just like Diddy Kong's peanut popgun. That would be awesome.

For some reason I imagine K. Rool's buggy eye being even more bloodshot!

Damn I'm getting bored with waiting for new info for this effing game.

I think it should blow up a bit while he looks at the screen upon getting hit. That would be very nostalgic during one of the slow mo heavy hit scenarios.
