The most expansive popularity poll we have access to is Shortie's, and K. Rool is still in the top tier of that. It appears as though Ridley has pulled ahead more than he used to in 2011-2013, probably thanks to a number of the old K. Rool voters being silly about his Tropical Freeze absence ("he has NO CHANCE if he's not there" and all that crap). But considering how long ago the roster was finalized, this matters very little in the grand scheme of things.

What'd be very useful, for someone more diligent than I am, is if there was a compilation of dated polls to track the king's popularity dating back from pre-Brawl's release up until the current day. It'd be cool to track his ups and downs. One thing that I think would become quickly obvious is that he has been on an upward curve compared to pre-Brawl, and had a tonne of popularity right around the finalization stage.

Hey all. Been lurking for awhile, and finally decided to join to discuss everyone's favorite tubby croc, and either rejoice in glorious victory, or console each other in ruinous defeat. K. Rool is my absolute most wanted newcomer after Mega Man, and since he made it, I now lend 100% of my support to the Kremling King for the same to happen to him!

We appreciate support fellow kutthroat. Big Mega Man fan myself by the way, I was excited when I found out he was a newcomer for ssb4, now all I really want is K. Rool and I'll be happy. I'm pretty sure he's still popular along with ridley in terms of the most wanted newcomer in ssb4.

I see people say that supporting a character is useless right now. I respectfully disagree. There is always the possibility that the developers decide to add a character or two through DLC and choose characters that are popular during the game's development cycle to work on. It is a bit of a stretch, I agree; however, we should keep the hype for characters we want high just so the developers know we want them.
You mean Rate Their Chances? That would be "RTC".
I was just about to say... I've never heard of RYC before. You think I'd be in the loop about such a game. :p

As for Rate Their Chances "Want Scores," I can elaborate. We give each character a percentage of how much we'd like them in the game (the more misgivings you have about a character's inclusion, the more points you take off) and then I average everyone's scores into one composite result. The version of the game that I run was started back in June 2013 and is exclusively on Smashboards. We get about 30 people voting per day, and maybe 50 on a day where we rate some big name character like K. Rool, Ridley, or Palutena. So I'd say that the want percentages in RTC represent a character's popularity on Smashboards pretty well, but they probably fail to show the greater picture of popularity.

K. Rool has always fared really well on the want portion of the game. In June he got a 78.57%, and this improved to 84.47% in November and to 85.46% just last week. With last week's rating, he passed Mewtwo and Ridley for the title of most wanted character in our game's database. At the very least, this confirms that K. Rool supporters have been an ever-present force on these boards since the game's reveal, and it even suggests that we may now be the most powerful force here.

Now, as I have read every post on the RTC thread, I can remember exactly why people have brought down his score. Some people have no attachment to the character send give him moderate scores as a result, others would prefer Dixie Kong, a small group of people think his design is generic or ugly, and a few people just think his somewhat-manic disposition and penchant for dressing up just isn't very interesting and may be a tad annoying.

Now, I also feel somewhat qualified to speak on the behalf of K. Rool's GameFAQs popularity levels. He's definitely Top Ten and probably Top Five. This thread and its predecessors pretty much prove that. Yes, despite how much ridicule he gets over there, GameFAQs loves him.

Anyone seen this trailer? That music <3 I'm also laughing at the poor fools who think that the number of lives you have dictate how hard the game is.

Before E3, the Top 5 I heard were Little Mac, King K. Rool, Ridley, Mega Man and Mewtwo. But, I honestly do think that the Kutthroats are the most dedicated fanbase to a character in Smash ever. And a majority of the fans are emotionally attached to K. Rool, and Rareware's work with Nintendo in general. Considering how many people joined after Smash Bros. 4's first trailer, and how many people are now supporting K. Rool, it reminds me how my first real post on these boards was in this thread. How welcome the people here are, and how much love you see the fanbase has for the character. Mostly, every single K. Rool supporter I've met isn't supporting him because "his blunderbuss could be a unique weapon", or that "Donkey Kong needs more representation", some of which can even befall the greatest of characters, but the fanbase likes him as a character, and misses him. It's how much that era meant to people.

I'm so glad to be a part of this, made some new friends, it's a shame that this kind of bond between fans couldn't really blossom again if the Kremling King gets in. It's been an honor to serve this crew.

Wait, seriously!? I mean, I know that K. Rool is an incredibly wanted character, all across the world, even, but for him to overtake Mewtwo in our want ratings?

Wow, K. Rool really is beloved, isn't he? I guess that makes me a little more confident in his appearance in Smash.

I keep playing dk 64 and every time there's a scene with k. rool the more and more I see why he deserves to be in the spotlight more often. Not just in ssb4 but In general as well. It makes me wonder why nintendo does'nt use him more in Mario sports games and what not.

I say that popularity and uniqueness are important factors when it comes to getting added in SSB4.

Mega Man and Little Mac weren't added just because they were popular, but also because they offered something new (Mega Man with his projectiles and Little Mac with his punches and Power Meter). With King K. Rool having popularity and definite uniqueness under his belt, he is a double threat.

Popularity is certainly useful when it comes to getting picked.
Well, popularity isn't everything, but when you're one of THE most wanted characters worldwide, and you have plenty of qualities that would make a good character, then it's pretty helpful.

@ APC99 APC99 summed it up pretty nicely.

Lately, in browsing the forums, I've noticed users here and there talking about how, "If K. Rool doesn't get in this time, his fanbase is DONE. KAPUT. OVER. SYNONYMS." or "Cranky is going to take K. Rool's place as the most wanted newcomer worldwide next game if K. Rool misses out!" Just watching over how many new users come into this thread and make first posts about K. Rool being their most wanted, and how they've grown up enjoying the character, and they have XYZ connection to him, lets me know that this is definitely not going to be the case, should the worst case scenario occur.

Like, most fans' enjoyment of the character extends so far and away beyond "I can make online flash games of him where he takes his top off and diddles my OC" or "he's the actual best character in existence because beams," it's not even funny. As such, I can't imagine the Kutthroats experiencing the same sort of complete desolation that, ah, certain other Brawl fanbases did. There's also that K. Rool has an actual legitimate shot at reappearing in his franchise, with or without Smash backing him up.

The only way I'll ever stop supporting K. Rool to be in Smash is when he's confirmed.

I think it's because there hasn't been any real chance to use him. The only Mario sports game since Super Sluggers has been Sports Mix, which only included the main characters and their usual cohorts. If they do ever make another Mario baseball spinoff (Which I would love, I have great memories of Superstar Baseball), I think we'll see K. Rool and Kritter again. Hopefully even Kludge or Kalypso.

In a perfect world, K. Rool will be in Mario Kart 8 along with Smash Bros.

K. Rool deserves some love and justice in the Smash universe. Seeing as how unique the newcomers have been, it would be a missed opportunity if he wasn't in this game.

Admittedly, I didn't play DKC2 and DKC3 after when DKC1 frustrated me. Despite this, that won't stop me from wanting K. Rool. I am hoping that if K. Rool gets confirmed, they would release every DKC game on the VC.

But I can see him being used in mario kart and mario tennis games for example, he's basically the same size as bowser and moves pretty quick.

Perhaps. But that doesn't make your support any less legitimate or whatever. Nor does it mean you're some goldfish who's just swimming between the threads of whatever characters you've deemed most unique over the past few seconds.

Like, I can understand concern about chances or odds or whatever, but if someone would be legitimately happy to see any given character in a game, why they'd no longer feel legitimately happy to see that character if that character didn't appear in one game is beyond me.

Side note, I glanced down at the 'users viewing thread' section a few minutes ago...10 users and 20 guests. Not even for any special occasion, just on a normal night of speculation and support. That's pretty awesome.

Hey, my first real exposure to him was the object of endless arguments against him. Namely Mario Super Sluggers. I certainly was aware of him and his Kremling Krew because of Melee and Brawl, but I knew next to nothing about the actual character. His appearance in MSS got me interested in playing the Donkey Kong Country games, which I now see as one of my best gaming related decisions ever. Six years later, he's my most wanted for Smash Bros. 4, and one my favorite characters in all of video games.

Behind your eyes.
I have no personal connection to Takamaru, but I want him in anyway, because Samurai (and if he doesn't get in, it'll be because Sakurai :troll:). And I've learned a lot about the character to further hype me up (thanks to his support thread, among other things). The same applies to Wii Fit Trainer, but she's already confirmed.

Pre-existing attachment is certainly a factor for support, but there exist a plethora of other factors also - such as being drawn to the character's out-of-Smash visual/character design, the potential moveset/playstyle, being swayed to the character's case via argumentation/exposure to them, seeing them as deserving entrants due to the existing support, and so on.

tl;dr - K Rool for Smash all day every day.

I'm a massive DK fan, which significantly increases my desire for him to be in Smash. BUT... even if I didn't like DK, I would still want him in because he's a crocodilly with a lot of moveset potential.

For me, personally, the big reason I support K. Rool is because of all the people who want him in. Well, a big part of it is also his great potential as a Smash character, but it seems that K. Rool is a truly beloved character. He's definitely one of the most deserving characters for the roster, along with the likes of Mewtwo and Ridley, and it shows. So many people here dream of his inclusion.

And seeing a long-held dream realized is a thing of true beauty. I guess that's why I support K. Rool.

The day King K. Rool gets announced as a newcomer for SSB(which hopefully won't be too far away), I will literally put on a pair of sunglasses and do a little techno dance to this version of his theme from DKC(SNES)
