I believe we need a confirming explanation from this LeeHarris fellow to answer some of our questions.

And why did he make an account here and have his first post be this huge thing, and then want to become affiliated with the site without even being a member in the first place?

Why would you flame me?

I said myself that I don't play with items. I don't like items and I haven't played with them for years.

The only point I'm trying to make is that people are automatically ruling out items in Brawl. Items were used in Melee tournaments for the longest time. Brawl is a different game and items deserve a chance, ESPECIALLY the Smash Ball.
i flame people 4 no reason 4 some reason idk why i look 4 reasons to call people noobs and stuff. it was more towards the smash ball. im just a weird person.

If you're 16, act it.

Let's get this thread back on topic for discussion.

I am still wondering how in the world this league is going to manage to keep track of the, most likely, thousands of people that are going to want to join it.

I doub that each and every person is going to receive individual attention, and get the promotion to "pro" level that he or she deserves.

Hey guys, calm down. The items debate is for far in the future. As to what exactly this is... here, I played AoE III competitively for a while. We had this thing called an ELO rating: what it did was, given your AoE nick, it would calculate a rating for you based on your win/loss ratio, how you did against variously rated players, and so on: you know, typical ways to calculate a rating. Anyway, the important part is that this required no input from you. It tracked your rating automatically without needing you to even know what an ELO rating is. All you had to to was have an onlone AoE account. I assume this will be similar, in that it will record win/loss data from your matches. I've no idea how it works coding wise, however. But that's the gist of it.

So basically it's a huge online ranking system? I wonder how this will work out.

I repeat: how will this information be recorded and will I have to add people's friend codes?

1: I assume that's up to the programmers.
2: Just as a guess, you might have to enter your own FC to create an account or something, but I don't think you'll need to enter other people's codes.
This is just guesswork, but that's how I suspect it'll work based on AoE.

Just another day.

No one knows but the creator of this thread. Wait until he answers your question (or catch him online or PM him).
As for the items I would like a few friendly tournaments to see whether items are beneficial or not. Plus, LeeHarris says that he's going to need more staff for updating ratings and such, so I don't see the flaws someone else sees.

Why wouldn't you act your age on the internet because these are real people and you would like them to think your nice.

on topic though this looks nice and they will probly find a way to keep track of peoples ranks.

ALL of what pyroloserkid and darfur said were true. To disagree is to be a steriotypical tourney player in every single sense. Brawl isn't even done yet, and you people already tourney-ban things you people have only seen in pictures is retarted-to extremes. Last I heard from E for All-goers smash balls and items COULD work with tournies. In other words, shut up and wait to play the game. As for this...I'm a tad scepticle, but I WILL end up joining if it is very sucessful! XD

This looks like a wonderful implementation!

If it works anything like the stats for Quake 3 camping server, then it will be like a mini-heaven. =]

I've done some very basic html and VB coding, and I think I do ok with visuals as well. But who knows.

Could I ask; when can we be expecting more in depth information on how this is going to work and some other generals that we the public I'm sure would love to know?

Looks like an interesting waste of time. I do have to say though, it is extremely naive to assume that Final Smashes won't be allowed at "pro" levels. Yes, Final Smashes are powerful. Yes, it looks like they're a guaranteed kill. But remember, you can take the smash ball away from them, and many of them can be dodged.

I think your intro post looks professional and legit, but to naively assume how the rules will be makes it look stupid, and thus makes the system look stupid. You should be more open-minded about the that. Remember, this isn't Melee 2.0. Hell, items might even be used in "pro" level games. We can doubt it or give reasons why it will be, but we can't know. And thus you shouldn't even say anything about it.

Yes this is true, however, nothing has been said that this can't be changed depending on how Brawl turns out.

While I'm not going to comment on the idea of the site or anything else, I wanted to point out that whether or not Brawl will use items or Final Smashes for tournaments has yet to be decided. And same goes for stages, as a vast majority of the stages banned in Melee were due to Fox's waveshine having a huge advantage on them. The only stages that we can even assume MIGHT be banned are Warioware and Pictochat.

I would recommend putting a hold on making the "rules" of competitve tournaments so soon. Wait for the Smash Back Room here on SWF (which has the most intelligent as well as the most skilled smash players available) to make a balanced ruleset for Brawl before you go ahead and claim things like no items, no final smashes, and limited stage selection are indicative of the competitive smash community.

EDIT: I also posted this directly after reading your main post, without looking at the tons of other posts which essentially say the same thing.

Although a good idea, we aren't even sure if they will implement a built-in ranking mode yet, so until it's put into concrete that the online system will stay the way it is it's probably best not to put much more effort into this project until then.

I'm still wating for LeeHarris to come back on and fully present this idea in a different manner. This would help to clarify things a bit for all of the speculation that is being amassed.

So, LeeHarris, ... your move.

Neat idea but 2 things I like to know:

1. Rules already? Items banned? Stages banned? I want your time machine. Though I know the rules will change.

2. How are you going to keep up with the records/wins/loses?

You're pretty much asking LeeHarris, who only posted twice: the intro, and then one response, and then has disappeared since.

Jeez, I told you people that LeeHarris is the only person who registered onto here that is doing the "smashleague" site. SO, when he goes offline you guys need to wait until he comes back online to answer them. I keep seeing the same question being asked over and over, and it's getting annoying. Read other people's post before you post your own, because if your question is already on the thread then don't repost the question.

I love how competitive automatically means No Items. We haven't even played the game yet. Wow!

I don't like items, but the fact that you're ruling them out right away really smashes my bros.

If items ARE going to be turned off, for the love of Smash keep the Smash Ball on.
To be honest these are just initial rules. They are basically a collection of our opinions from playing competitive smash for the last few years, but they can definitely change. I would love to hear the opinions from opposing sides on this, because obviously the opinions of the few of us working on it aren't nearly as important as the thousands of people who will be playing.

Dude... I like this except about the Final Smashes being turned off in Competitive play. Sakurai himself even just SAID in the Lucas FS update that they are MEANT to help balance the game. Why take away a characters move? That's like saying. "You can play as Zelda in Melee... but you are NOT allowed to use her down B EVER"
Similar to what I said above, these are the initial rules based on our speculation. Although it is similar to Melee, it is definitely not the same game and we have nothing set in stone. Like I said, keep the opinions coming, because I'd love to hear from both sides.

Also, remember that there will be a Competitive and Casual league. There will obviously always be people who prefer the use of items, and there will always be people who think that anything that could possibly give one side an unfair advantage should be banned. The casual will be meant for one crowd, while the competitive will be meant for the other. However, I am definitely interested in fine tuning the ideas behind competitive smash, especially after the game is released.

This league will be about the community's wants and ideas, not the staff. That is why I created this thread :).

Also, I saw a couple of people thought it was odd that this is my first post on SmashBoards. I actually have browsed SmashBoards for several years, and I had an account, but I posted rarely. I figured I would start fresh, and create an account and a name (Lee Harris is my real name :)) that could be linked to Smash League.

**IMPORTANT** I just updated the front page with more info about how the ranking system will work.
