grabbed this from mywii

The Government is going to censor any 'refused classification' websites. Also for some reason Christian sites, some Youtube links, Wikipedia entries, and far more will be blocked.

This really sucks, first we cant have R-rated games, and now probably our whole interwebs will end up like china. >_<

How does everyone else feel about this?

But since Australia has a different ratings board than the rest of the world, doesn't this mean that the Board will have to go through and rate every single website on the internet??? They can't just refuse classification without knowing what the website's about...

EDIT: Nevermind, reading the article solved that question... Well, my friends, it seems George Orwell was 25 years too premature in his prediction, but it's finally coming to pass T.T Shield your thoughts, everyone...

HAS TO GO THROUGH SENATE FIRST. WON'T BE INTRODUCED TILL NEXT ELECTION. WHICH IS 2010 ASSUMING THAT THERE IS NO EARLY CALLED ELECTION, aka. TONY ABBOTT DOESN'T DO SOMETHING STUPID.

Jeez.

Besides that, the R18 forum for gaming has also been opened for discussions into next year. I highly doubt that this will pass, given the fact that the opposition will oppose it. Alot of ISP's have been saying that with a bolted down list of URLs that it's technically feasible to have a filter without slowing down the internet, however there are also many people quoting how easy it is to bypass the filter. There's also the problem of random people being hurt in the blocking process and the problem with government censorship, although they have stated that the panel will be at "an arms length" from the government itself.

Seems Like arrow welcomes our evil abott overlords.

In any case. This is an absolute joke. You block all the people who know nothing about the internet, while leaving the people who you really want to have moderation (pedobear) with an easily bypassed system. Basically its Australia saying, "look, we dont have any kiddie fiddles, one does not simply internet into mordor".

I cant see this working/passing through the senate.

People of the Internet mush band together to secure freedom of said Internet. Before long the world will all be censored, and whoever can still get on 4chan will rule.

Censorship or Censorshit?

A question worth thinking about. However, given the case of Golden FireWall of China, everyone here is doubting it will ever get passed through the senate. But, the most vocal anti-anti-free right speakers will make sure it gets destroyed down to the last grain if it never gets through. Otherwise, the internet will slow down by like a mile and all we can do is go back to 56k/ADSL speeds and look up really small movies. not be able to play heavy bandwidth games or look up real time porn etc etc.

...Annnnnd we'll have to end up using programs like Freegate to get around firewalls. Tunnelling/Proxies r great to use when blocked by DET @ TAFE computers at the mo. Youtube on ultra high speeds WUBWUB.
Freegate was created by Falun Gong practitioners and has been financed by a United States government agency, the Broadcasting Board of Governors. In 2005 alone, the US government spent US$ 685,000 on Freegate. Freegate is also funded by a group called Human Rights in China, which in turn is financed by the National Endowment for Democracy a U.S. non-profit organization.

censored too bad

Maybe Senate will just approve the mosaic filter.
Porn isn't censored. All legal forms of porn (including fetishes like BDSM, but not including extreme fetishes, like scat eating) will not be filtered, as per the current version of the filter. Scat, child, extreme forms of masochism, etc. will be filtered, but that's because they're illegal.

Haha.

That's like saying that the government does everything they say they'll do.

Good internet filter? Won't block sites that are against our government? Will listen to the public?

HA!

Anyway, the point is, Liberal controls the Senate, thus they won't let the Labour filter through. Its their job to oppose everything Labour does so nothing ever happens.

Haha, they've tried to implement an internet filter before and that failed horribly... I have no idea why they're trying again. The internet speeds in Australia are already really **** as they are, there was a list of the fastest net speeds in the world and I think Australia was like... 7th last or something out of 30ish.
