Smash Journeyman
My local scene hasn't had many Smash 4 events yet. This week was the second time they've hosted it at their normal biweeklies - we're still trying to build up support for the game. Plus, the scheduling today possibly ended up discouraging a few people from entering that might have, so there were only like 6 people in singles. However, this was my first Smash 4 singles tourney of any kind, and even out of the 6 that entered, I ended up getting 2nd going all Ness. I'm still waiting for the Challonge bracket to be posted for reference (EDIT: http://challonge.com/BTownBeatdownXIXSmash4Singles), but I made it to GF on the winner's side before losing 3-1 and 3-2 against an evasive Falcon/Fox player.
May not seem like much, obviously not qualifying for the OP, but for me it's a big step forward compared to my time with Minnesota's Brawl scene in 2009 - out of a bunch of informal weekly tournaments and a handful of larger monthlies, I only won one tournament set that whole year (first round of loser's bracket, no less). I was, shall we say, more prone to scrubby attitudes back then, and I didn't have the sort of maturity and patience that I have now to understand the importance of proper practice and maintaining an overall positive mindset. While I'm not gonna pretend that these things are gonna carry me the whole way, I still feel like my improved approach to playing a fighting game and integrating with the local scene leaves me in a much better position to learn the fundamentals of Smash, get more comfortable with analyzing opponents and identifying my own weaknesses, and, most importantly, have a fun time no matter what happens.
Now if only these biweeklies weren't free to enter, I could post more results from (hopefully) larger tournaments in the future for the OP.
