I know there is a topic about the cstick atm, but I am personally interested in everyone's opinion, use, strategies, and timing etc. on the Z button. It is a heavy part of my game and often times I think I "overuse" it(if possible?:lick:). For some reason I feel like it is an underused button in the community, but my community is very small and that is all i have to judge by. I am hoping I can get more opinions on it here.

Techs I prefer to use Z for:

L-canceling.
All aerials
Any grabs(I'm sure the most common, but I like it for shieldgrabbin as well)

Idk, I'm sure we all use it at least from time to time. I just hope the small puny looking purple button will hold up just as good as the other buttons. I feel like my controller dies a little bit inside when I wap it hard.:c

I prefer to use the C-stick over the Z-button for aerials. Your mileage may vary according to the character you use, but I greatly appreciate the ability to b-air while moving forward, f-air while moving back, up-air without double jumping and d-air without fastfalling.

I can't get used to L-canceling with the Z-button, but it's a safer idea to use Z for that overall. Since Z counts as a soft L/R press and not a full press, it won't start a new tech window, which could really **** you over if you get hit during those 20 frames of cooldown where you can't tech.

I generally shieldgrab with A, since it's easier to spam, but I do all other grabs with Z.

I seldom use it for that purpose, but you can use Z to get the lightest shield possible. Kinda only practical if you were recovering from another action and held Z beforehand though, since using it while idle will cause a grab first.

I will say I do use cstick depending on what I need to do, but I still prefer Z. I mean I need it for retreating fairs with marth etc. like what you were saying.

I'm trying to get in the habit of not using z for grabbing. Too often have I lightshielded on accident and messsed up chain grabs. I also don't notice it but I guess sometimes I zair instead of nair.

I do use Z for grabs but I've been trying to condition myself to use R+A so I never get that stupid light shield that comes out instead of grab sometimes.

Jc grabs, some aerials if I need to do them mad fast, like marths short hop double fair. But thats it, or if my fingers are in an awkward position and I realize thats the fastest way to l-cancel, that would only happen if im in the middle of some crazy claw though.

You can use Z to double tap for SHFFLing, once for the attack and once for canceling. I think that's what Hungrybox does.

Yeah, Z is pretty good for SHFFLing.

I use it for that, light shielding, and JC Grabs.

I can think of three things I use Z for:
-all grabs (excluding shieldgrabs)
-lightshielding
-Marth's nair (literally the only aerial I use Z for... no clue why)

Z button is obviously broken and should be banned. It let's you do a move (grab) that would otherwise require TWO INPUTS at the same time!

(It's funny how noobs never complain about the Z button actually).

I only use Z for grabs. Several people use it for aerials though, Hungrybox for example.
I think some people use it to L-Cancel as well.

I'm interested what finger everyone uses for z. I have my right index finger on Z and middle on R (although it's my left index I use for L). I use it for JC grabs only.

Oh, and releasing bombs with Link, I actually find that very useful.

I only use Z for JC-grabs and shine-aerials.

I was waiting for this thread

my entire playstyle is based on the z-button

I use it for practically all my non c-stick aerials

EVERY L-cancel

All grabs (R to Z to grab out of shield lol)

and full-on shffling of course

in case anyone else is wondering

I jump with up

and I wavedash with up R down

I don't use L at all, and X/Y maybe once per match.

only wit jiggs ._.

don't you think that X/Y is better since you can be DI'ing down while you start wavedashes etc, I mean you crouch cancel alot already, just figured with a floaty like jiggs might not hurt to be able to save the Control stick for DI purposes by using buttons to jump, better than trying to wavedash/jump on occasion and getting caught DI'ing up

you rest out of shield using X/Y though right?

You WD with up and R?

That.. feels so weird xD

I use only Y/L (lol)

I use X sometimes when I killed someone and wanna WD for lulz.

I also only really use Z to grab and lightshield.

Anyone use more than one jump/shield button?

My brother plays really weird and utilizes every button on the damn controller LOL

I'm still getting used to it, but I always try to shield with L so that when I have to wavedash out of shield I can perform the air dodge with R instead of having to let go of the shield button and clicking it again. I also tend to shuffle with X (I flick my finger off the bottom edge of the button and then move to the c-stick) but do all other jumps/wavedashes with Y.

I broke my right thumb december 2009, and while i had a cast on, i had to use my four fingers to work, x,a,b,and cstick, so i couldn't use z.
hurt my marth game so bad.

Also: If you do an aerial shortly before hitting the ground with the Z button, you've already taken care of the L-canceling.

I use L to L-cancel and wavedash, R to shield, up and X to jump depending on the situation. I can wavedash with up or X but I mostly use X since I broke a control stick by using it to wavedash.

Like you brother Lucien uses every button on the controller and switches to claw and does all kinds of crazy stuff.

I don't use R for anything, but I use X, Y, and sometimes the joystick for jumping.

X - nearly everything
Y - any time I need to move to the B button really quickly, like SHDL or multishining
up - sometimes to jump out of shine, but that's about it. If it's a full-hop or mid-air jump, I use this, but if it's a short hop I usually use X.

the other day I was seeing how comfortably I could short hop and shuffle n/dairs with fox using C-stick to jump with L and its not so bad it seems, but the idea being that you'd be jumping on the 1st possible frame guaranteed. People buffer rolls and spotdodges with C-stick but I don't really hear people talking much about buffering jumps
